While we are unable to have an in-person ceremony this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it does not minimize the magnitude of what our Class of 2021 has achieved, and the importance of this celebration. It is a privilege to share with you and your families a day of virtual recognition of your successful completion of this important phase in your professional development.

Your dedication and hard work during your years at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health have been distinguished by your remarkable resilience and sense of community. There were disruptions to your education due to the pandemic, and I am deeply impressed by your individual and collective responses to this crisis.

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health offers a 5-year integrated curriculum for those students interested in becoming fully trained in public

health, leading to the MD-MPH dual degrees. The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree provides professional preparation in core public health competencies.

PATH OF DISTINCTION IN PUBLIC HEALTH

The MD degree with “Path of Distinction in Public Health” is conferred upon those medical students who, in addition to completing the requirements for the MD degree,

DECLARATION OF GENEVA

At the time of being admitted as a member of the medical profession:

I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of humanity;

I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due;

I will practice my profession with conscience and dignity;

The health of my patient will be my first consideration;

I will respect the secrets that are confided in me, even after the patient has died;

I will maintain by all the means in my power, the honor and the noble traditions of the medical profession;

My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers;

I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or

any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient;

I will maintain the utmost respect for human life;

I will not use my medical knowledge to violate human rights and civil liberties, even under threat;

I make these promises solemnly, freely and upon my honor.
