Madeline Cox Arleo, J.D. ’89United States District Judge

Commencement Speaker

On November 21, 2014, President Barack Obama appointed Madeline Cox Arleo as a United States District Judge for the District of New Jersey, to sit in Newark, New Jersey. Prior to that, she served as a Federal Magistrate Judge for fourteen years. She is grateful for all of her outstanding law clerks and judicial

colleagues, many of whom attended Seton Hall Law School. Together with the Honorable Michael Hammer (SHLS ’94) she serves as Presiding Judge of the District’s reentry court known as “ReNew” which provides supervision and positive support for individuals released from terms of federal incarceration. This has been the most gratifying work of her professional career.

Judge Arleo was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to her wonderful parents, Peter and Elizabeth Cox. She graduated from St. Dominic Academy, an all girls high school that empowers young women. She received her bachelor’s degree in English and Political Science from Rutgers College, Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and her master’s degree from the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University. She graduated summa cum laude from Seton Hall Law School, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review, received an excellent legal education and made life-long friends. She was a law clerk to the Honorable Marie L. Garibaldi, New Jersey Supreme Court, from 1989-90, a great mentor and friend, whom she loved dearly.

Prior to her appointment to the Bench, Judge Arleo was a litigation partner at Tompkins, McGuire, Wachenfeld & Barry in Newark, New Jersey where she had the privilege of working with both John Barry and Bill McGuire (SHLS ’58), two of New Jersey’s greatest lawyers, together with many other outstanding SHLS lawyers. Before that, she was associated with the law firm of Clapp & Eisenberg, in Newark, New Jersey. While in practice, she served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Seton Hall Law School and as Secretary to the District V-A Ethics Committee. She is a frequent speaker for continuing education seminars for various bar associations in New Jersey.

Presently, Judge Arleo is a Fellow of the American Bar Association, an Advisor to the Historical Society of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and to the Association of the Federal Bar for the District of New Jersey, and serves as honorary mistress of ceremonies for the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association Annual Gala. She serves on the Paralegal Studies Advisory Board at Montclair State University. She served on the Board of Trustees of her alma mater, St. Dominic Academy, Jersey City, from 2006-2012 and presently serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of its sister school, Mount St. Dominic Academy in Caldwell, New Jersey.

Judge Arleo lives in Caldwell, New Jersey with her husband, Frank Arleo, a partner at Arleo and Donohue, West Orange, New Jersey, her mother Elizabeth Cox, and their beloved rescue schnauzer, Bailey. Her daughter Alexandra, a recent graduate of Villanova University, lives in New York City. Her son, Peter, is a rising senior at Villanova School of Business, following in his father’s footsteps. The Arleos love to spend their summers at the Jersey shore. They are all Villanova basketball fans.

At the Law School’s Commencement Exercises, Seton Hall University confers three law degrees:

Master of Science in Jurisprudence (M.S.J. or M.S.) program is designed for non-lawyers eager to advance their careers and enhance their marketability in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, information technology, telecommunications, biotechnology and financial services fields. M.S. students concentrate in Health and Hospital Law, Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Law and Compliance, Intellectual Property Law or Financial Services Compliance. Joint concentrations are also available. M.S. students complete the 31-credit-hour Master of Jurisprudence online, or as a hybrid online/traditional (in-person) degree program.

The Juris Doctor, the traditional law degree, is pursued post-college and requires 88 credit hours. The program is three years of full-time study or four years of part-time study. All credits must be earned within six years. Seton Hall graduates are eligible to take the bar examination in all states. Seton Hall designs its course of study to ensure that all students gain basic competence for the many opportunities and responsibilities that will confront them. It offers substantive law taught in classroom settings, predominantly through the casebook, problem or simulation methods of instruction. Students not only learn the law, but are also encouraged to analyze related policy issues. They explore the development of legal principles and consider alternative ways to regulate the lives and affairs of men and women. The required course curriculum is the foundation upon which later electives, seminars, and clinical work build. Upper-class students have wide latitude in program planning and may pursue a “concentration” in several areas of law or informally specialize in a number of other fields. Through diverse clinical and skills offerings, students have a first-hand opportunity to engage in a highly supervised law practice.

The Health Law and Intellectual Property (IP) Master of Laws (LL.M.) programs provide attorneys with an opportunity to broadly explore health law or Intellectual Property. The Health Law LL.M. program is designed for both practicing health care attorneys and those seeking to expand their practice to health care clients. The IP program is designed for attorneys who wish to transition from other practice areas to IP, government officials, and regulators who specialize or wish to specialize in IP related issues, and law school graduates who are interested in teaching or other academic research relating to IP Law.
