I t is with mixed feel- ings that I write this ninth and last letter as President-Rector for Alumni News. After close to a decade as Rector I have grown in my understanding of the importance of priestly formation in the life of the Church and the role that St. Mary’s Seminary & University plays in this holy mission. In addition, my own conviction of the importance of the alumni’s involvement in the core mission of the seminary has deepened in my own mind and heart. At graduation this year the seminary honored Edwin Cardinal O’Brien, who served twenty years in seminary administration, by awarding him an honorary doctorate. His commencement address emphasized the critical nature of the work of the Sulpicians in the ministry of priestly formation as well as in continuing formation of clergy: “I think you can appreciate my saying that this is a kind of homecoming for me. . . From the start I was impressed by the Sulpician spirit of this institution – a highly motivated student body, a distinguished and committed faculty and staff, and quite especially, a most effective and generous Board of Trustees.” As I conclude my time as President-Rector let me echo the Cardinal’s view of the St. Mary’s community. I move into the next stage of my priestly life and ministry with a thankful and joyful heart for God’s goodness to me through the seminarians, faculty, staff, board and the alumni of this, my alma mater. Father Michael Barré, P.S.S.“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.” So says thePsalmist and so has Father MichaelBarré taught and lived for close tofifty years as a priest with over half of that time at St. Mary’s. Fathernow leaves this seminary for theSulpician retirement home. His

insightful classes, inspiring homilies, and humorous banter will continue to be with us. The entire communityextended its thanks to Father at the end of the academicyear Mass at which he preached a moving homily. Wepresented him with a gift of a picture of a Qumran manu-script of Genesis chapter one. May the God who createdus all continue to strengthen Michael in the next stage ofhis life and ministry.

Father Daniel Grigassy, O.F.M.At the end of the academic year ban-quet we bid farewell to Father DanielGrigassy after his four years of teach-ing, liturgical leadership and forma-tion work at St. Mary’s. FatherGrigassy’ s guidance of our communi-ty liturgies in addition to his teachingliturgy and sacraments taught us the

importance of the liturgy as the source and summit of theChurch’s life. His careful guidance of seminarians in spiri-tual direction and mentoring assisted men in their move-ment toward priesthood. We wish him well in his newassignment with his Franciscan community.

Father Rene Lopez, P.S.S.At the end of the academic year banquet we also bid farewell to FatherRene Lopez after his nine years ofteaching and formation work at St.Mary’s. We remembered Father’sintense devotion to the Word of Godin his classes and homilies as well ashis advice to seminarians. Father will

be on sabbatical for a year and then take up anotherSulpician assignment. May the Lord strengthen him as adisciple and priest to continue walking in the footsteps ofthe Master.
