guarantees you a highstandard of specification and quality

Multiflex liners have a robust double-skin construction for usewith multifuel burning stoves, fires or boilers. The inner skin isdesigned to provide a smooth gas tight flue for the safe andefficient passage of flue gases. The outer skin has a durablecorrugated construction to allow maximum flexibility.

The liners are listed by HETAS and covered by independentCSTB testing approval to comply with UK Building Regulations. They also manufactured under strict quality control procedurescertified to the International standard ISO9002. Theperformance designation of the liners as described in BS EN1443 is T450 N2 S D3.

There are two types of Multiflex liner

● Multiflex 316. Made from 316 grade stainlesssteel for use with open fires, multifuel or wood burningstoves, and appliances burning gas or oil.

● Multiflex 904L. Made from 904L grade stainless steel thathas significantly increased resistance against corrosion.Designed for use with coal or solid fuel burning appliances, and installations where a higher specification of lineris required.

Diameters and coil lengthsThe liners are available in cut lengths or full coils in the followingdiameters -

External diameter is approximately 7 mm greater than theinternal diameter.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS To be read before handling or installing the liners

1. Chimney inspection and preparationSweep the chimney, removing all soot, tar and combustibleproducts. Check that the chimney structure is sound andwatertight, and that the walls are solid masonry at least 100mmthick. Make good all defects and remove any terminal affectingthe installation of the liner; store it carefully if it is to be refitted.

2. Liner sizing and lengthEnsure the liner size conforms to the appliance manufacturer’srecommendations. Measure the liner length required and selectthe appropriate fittings.

The following is a general guide to minimum flue sizes:

Open Fires - Minimum 200 mm for solid fuel burning open firesor 175mm for decorative flame effect gas open fires having afireplace opening up to 500 mm by 550 mm. For larger fireopenings a flue size equal to 14-16% of the fireplace openingarea is usually required, consult the Building Regulations or theTopstak Technical Department.

Stoves, room heaters, boilers or cookers burning solid fuels-Minimum 150 mm or 180mm for larger appliances, such asstoves that can be used with the doors open.

Other appliances - Consult the appliance manufacturer’s fluesizing recommendations. Note - The liners must not be usedwhere halogenic or chlorine vapours are present.

3. Pre-installation checkUnless the existing flue is clearly big enough to give a clearanceof 20 mm around the liner, make a pre-installation check bysecuring a nose cone with pull rope to a minimum 1 metrelength of the chosen liner and pull it through the chimney.Investigate and repair any defects that prevent easy passage ofthe liner, and repeat the check.

4. Installing the linerRemove any tape or labels on the liner. Use a nose cone withguide rope to pull the liner through the chimney in one completelength. The arrow printed on the liner must point up thechimney.

One person should feed the liner into the chimney, whilstanother pulls it on the guide rope taking care to prevent the linerbeing damaged by snagging or overstretching.

Bends in the chimney must not be more than 45 from thevertical. The minimum bending radius for the liners is 3 timesthe liner diameter. If any access is cut into the chimney, makegood after installation.

5. Connecting the base of the linerThe liner must be secured and sealed into the socket endof the appropriate Multiflex adaptor, using fire cement andself-tapping stainless steel screws.

For open fires - Secure and seal aGA - Gather adaptor into themasonry gather above the fireplace. If the gather or throating isunsuitable provide a suitablealternative, (ask for details) intowhich a MA - Adaptor is to besealed and secured. An MA -Adaptor is to be used to connectthe liner to a canopy.

For other appliances - Use a Multiflex MA- Adaptor, MR -Reducer or MC - Connector to connect the liner tosuitable flue pipe (see the Topstak range of flue pipes). Aminimum 600 mm vertical length of flue pipe must befitted above the appliance.

Secure the base of the liner with a BS - Bottom supportbracket tightened around the liner and secured into thechimney wall. For liners over 10 metres in length fit a BS- bracket halfway up the liner to give intermediate support

When using the RW insulationsecure a BSR - Support bracket inthe same way to support the liner, adaptor and insulation.

Fit a suitable non-combustibleregister plate to close off the baseof the chimney opening if theheating appliance is freestanding inthe fireplace recess.

Note: Flue pipes must be installed in accordance with therelevant regulations with the socket end uppermost andthe required distance from combustible material. Providethe necessary permanent ventilation needed for the safeoperation of the appliance. If the chimney cannot beswept through the appliance provide separate access, such a flue pipe with access door.

6. The gap around the linerWhen the gap is 20 to 50mm all around the liner it can beleft as a ventilated air space. If the gap is larger or thechimney is exposed the liner can be insulated by;

Using a backfill - Seal the gap around the liner at thebottom of the chimney with a non-combustible registerplate or similar. Completely fill the gap with dry granularinsulation such as perlite, leca or vermiculite.

Using insulation wrap - As the liner is being installed cutand secure the RW Rockwool insulation mat in sectionsaround the full length of the liner with tying wire. Hightemperature foil backed Preformed Rockwool pipeinsulation sections may also be used. (Ask for details)

7. Finishing the top of the linerCarefully cut and secure the end of the liner with stainlesssteel rivets or welding. Tighten the FC - Top fixing clamparound the top of the liner and secure it into the masonry.Bed the CP - Top closing plate above the clamp withsuitable mortar flaunching to prevent water penetration.

Fit a chimney pot if required. If finishing the liner withouta pot fit an MA - Adaptor or MFS - Inner sleeve insert andflaunch around this with mortar.

Venting - Provide a 15 mm diameter vent hole just belowthe CP - Top closing plate to allow any moisture in the airgap or insulation to evaporate freely. Angle the vent toprevent water ingress. For uninsulated liners also providea permanent vent with 20 sq. cm. free air flow into the airgap around the liner at the base of the chimney.

9. Completing the installationCheck that the liner, fittings and connections have beeninstalled correctly. If necessary carry out a smoke test asspecified in the relevant British Standard. Gas firedinstallations must be carried out by a CORGI registeredinstaller. A chimney notice plate should be completedwith details of the installation and fixed alongside theappliance installation, fuse box or water mains in theproperty. Ask for the Topstak chimney notice plate leaflet.

10. General guidanceProvide safe working access and follow Health & Safetyrules. Wear suitable protective clothing and gloves whenhandling the liner and fittings to avoid injury from sharpedges. Take care when unpacking the liner as it can‘spring’ out. Also wear goggles and dust mask whenhandling soot deposits or insulation.

11. User and maintenance instructionsThe performance and life of any flue liner is dependant oncorrect use and maintenance. Failure to follow theseinstructions may create situations where the installationand liner can suffer damage.

Fuel Burning - For gas or oil follow the appliancemanufacturers operating instructions.

When burning wood it must be fully seasoned (i.e. air-dried for 1 to 2 years under a waterproof cover open onall sides). Only use approved solid fuel that is dry.Always burn solid fuel/ wood on a bright fire and avoidburning in slumbering conditions, particularly if using aclosed appliance with processed or smokeless fuels thatcan produce high concentrations of corrosive sootdeposits. If these deposits are allowed to accumulate inthe flue this greatly increases the risk of damage due tochimney fires or corrosion.

Do not burn household waste, plastics, treated timber oruse chemical chimney cleaners that produce harmfultoxic or corrosive gases.

Maintenance - British Standards recommend allflueways are regularly checked and kept clean. Chimneysused with coal or wood should ideally be swept before, during and after the heating season or at least twice ayear using sweeping rods attached to a bristle brushmatching the flue diameter and fitted with ball end. Use aNACS member or qualified chimney sweep that gives asweeping certificate.

‘THE LEADER FOR MULTIFUEL FLEXIBLECHIMNEY LINERS’

Multiflex is recognized as the leading name for multifuelflexible liners, a position that has been held since the firstliners were produced over 20 years ago.

Continual development using improvements in modernmaterials and advances in technology ensures thatMultiflex leads the market in terms of quality andperformance.

Multiflex liners are designed to provide the quick andeconomical solution for improving the safety andefficiency of old chimneys. There are many situationswhere Multiflex is the best choice for solving commonchimney problems.

If your chimney is leakingAfter many years use old, and particularly unlinedchimneys can create many problems. Over time hotsmoke, tars and acids eat into the chimney walls anderode mortar joints causing staining to the exterior stoneor brickwork, and leakage of dangerous fumes into theproperty.

Multiflex protects old chimneys against deterioration andleakage by providing a new gastight flue liner thatwithstands high temperatures and minimises the risk oftar deposits.

If you have problems with smoky firesLarge chimneys with oversized, uneven or damp flues arevery inefficient and usually produce poor up draughtcausing smoke to blow back into the room.

The Multiflex liner provides a smooth and sealed flue thatwarms quickly to create a strong updraught, allowing thestove or fire to operate efficiently.

Opening up an old fireplace or installing a new fireAs many old chimneys were built without flue liners andrisk leakage it is always prudent to have a new liner fitted.Indeed, most stove and fire manufacturers require thatthe chimney has a suitable flue liner of the correct sizeand specification to ensure safe and efficient operation ofthe fire or stove.

Multiflex is available in wide choice of sizes complete withfittings for easy connection to stoves or fires. The linersare specially designed for quick installation with theminimum of disruption, and their flexibility can cope withbends of up to 45 degrees and typical ‘offset’ Victorianchimneys.
