o Application Programming Interface
o Typically referred to as web services
o Request/Response protocol
o Allows direct interaction from client to content backend, without going
through a middle man, so to speak (Web interface).

o For all subscriptions, regardless
of the API used, the following
fields are reusable for public
display.
o Other information retrieved via the
Web services can be reused in
internal systems.
o Institutions may access and utilize
document records authored by
their faculty, researchers, staff and
students only.
o When using Web of Science
metadata on a public website, you
must link to the record on the Web
of Science platform. See Links
Article Match Retrieval
documentation for assistance in
establishing links.
Data Usage policy
* Times Cited counts can be displayed dynamically but not stored in a local system. Times cited counts cannot be harvested, aggregated, or manipulated.
5Available Web Services
Article Match Retrieval
The Links Article Match Retrieval Service (AMR) allows for a real-time
lookup of bibliographic metadata such as DOI, author, source title, etc.,
against the Web of Science Core Collection. This enables building article
level links to the Web of Science from external systems and retrieving Times
Cited counts from the Web of Science.
InCites
InCites is a citation-based evaluation tool for academic and government
administrators to analyze institutional productivity and benchmark output
against peers and aspirational peers in a national or international context.
The InCites API provides article level metrics to support integration in
Research Management Systems or Current Research Information Systems
(CRIS).
6Available Web Services continued
Web of Science Web Services Lite
This Web services supports rich searching across the Web of Science Core
Collection and retrieving core article level metadata. Reuse this data in your
public facing applications, including institutional repositories and research
networking systems.
Web of Science Web Services Expanded
Everything in Web Services Lite plus additional metadata, such as author
addresses and author affiliations.
7Links AMRLinks Article Match Retrieval Service (Links AMR) is an API service that supplies:
– article data and links from Web of Science™ Core Collection
– article data and links from Data Citation Index
– Journal Impact Factor links from Journal Citation Reports®
The request specifies the data you want to obtain, and the article or journal metadata for which
you want to match. The response returns the requested data.
Article data returned includes:
– Times Cited counts
– UT/UID (Unique Identifier)
– DOI
– PMID
Links returned include:
– Source URL
– Citing Articles Summary URL
– Related Records URL
– Repository URL (DCI)
– Journal Impact Factor link

InCites is a citation-based
evaluation tool for academic
and government
administrators to analyze
institutional productivity and
benchmark output against
peers and aspirational peers
in a national or international
context.
The InCites API provides
document level metrics to
support integration in
Research Management

o Web Services Lite returns 12 Metadata fields (in XML)
o Search tags must be used in the query syntax for Web Services Lite/Expanded, similar to the advanced search option in WoS online.
– Ex: AU=Corma, A* AND OG=Universitat Politecnica de Valencia / AI=A-3040-2013
o Web Services Premium returns most all full record metadata fields (in XML)

o Using Web Services Lite and Links AMR together:
– Perfect solution for institutional repositories.
– Search & retrieve records from your institution using web services Lite.
– Update the records with times cited counts and PubMed IDs using Links AMR.
– Include links back to Web of Science records and citations.
– For records not affiliated with your institution (records published while your members were at another institution), use DOI with both APIs to get full details and citation counts.
– Link data from the two APIs with UID or DOI.
– Provide links to InCites JCR to get most current Impact Factor information for sources using ISSN.

16Clarivate and VIVO
Clarivate Analytics is an active member, sponsor, and official registered
service provider of VIVO
VIVO is an open-source software used by universities and research
organizations around the world as a research portal to their scholarly
activities. It provides an integrated view of the scholarly work of an
organization to encourage internal and external collaboration
among researchers. Clarivate Analytics offers services to help institutions
implement VIVO, including setup and configuration, software customization,
technical training, and project planning. Clarivate Analytics works directly
with clients to plan and execute a VIVO implementation.
VIVO
17Using Clarivate Analytics Data with VIVO
Web of Science: you can automatically populate VIVO profiles with
metadata for research outputs using our APIs. Our APIs also enable you to
include a times cited count in VIVO as a measure of research impact for
your publications. The Data Citation Index provides records of millions of
datasets from trusted data repositories. Our API can also be used to
integrate these datasets into researcher profiles in VIVO.
InCites Benchmarking and Analytics: Subscribers to our InCites
Benchmarking and Analytics product have access to APIs that enable
further integration of rich Web of Science Core Collection metadata into
VIVO profiles, as well as citation indicators like "highly cited paper" or
"industry collaboration".
Converis: Users of our CRIS system, Converis, can integrate their robust,
curated researcher profiles directly into VIVO via API.
