Dance-A-Thon By: Dillon Grimes

At the end of January, our school had a dance-a-thon as a fundraiser for our school. It was very successful, passing the goal of 10,000 dollars! It was so much fun to do the dance we learned all together ad spend time with friends outside of school! This year’s theme was the Git Up, which was the song we danced to. There was a photobooth to take pictures with friends and teachers and also a very fun DJ! As a reward for passing the goal, all of the students will receive an ice cream treat in the spring! We are all looking forward to that and the next dance-a-thon because it was so much fun!

Catholic Schools Week

By: Julian Chapman

Catholic Schools Week for CJF started with the Open House on Sunday January 26. The  hallways at the open house were very decorative, and the teachers were in their classrooms to greet all visiting families. Monday was parish appreciation day, Tuesday was community appreciation day, Wednesday was faculty/staff appreciation day, Thursday was parent appreciation day, and Friday was student appreciation day. For student appreciation day a rock band taught students the history of music as well as playing some music. We thank our faculty and staff for a great school and education.

Electives By: Lydia Tomko

When CJF students enter middle school, they enjoy a program called Electives. On alternating Thursdays, an extra block is added to our morning schedule, during which students get to participate in a fun and often very productive elective session which they sign up for at the beginning of the trimester. And the best part is, there are tons of different options each time! Choices this trimester are Volleyball, Cooking and Baking, Creative Writing, Robotics, Crochet, Joseph Props, Electronics, SSR (Sustained Silent Reading), and the energetic Line Dancing! In Volleyball, students work on skills and techniques to prepare them for a game, which they have at the end of every block. In Cooking and Baking, delicious foods and desserts are cooked and prepared, which are enjoyed at lunch by participating students. Students also learn how to properly cut and prepare vegetables. Seventh grader Maggie

Ingles says, “It's such a fun way to spend your morning!” In Creative Writing, students receive a prompt and a chance to compare stories with peers. Students in Robotics make a different kind of robot every week, and the results are often fascinating! Erin Fahy, also in seventh grade, says of robotics, “Robotics is so fun, and we learn how to make robots that can move!” In Crochet, yarn becomes a pretty infinity or standard scarf, and in Joseph Props, students make props for the school play, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. In Electronics, students use wires, batteries, and other tools to discover about the conduction of electricity and in SSR, there is quiet time for studying, extra homework, or reading. And finally, Line Dancing offers the opportunity to learn dance moves and get a bit of exercise as well. Middle schoolers, the coming elective dates are February 27 and March 12.

Green Hearts

By: Molly Dougherty & Anna Kane

As you may have noticed, there are green hearts on all the windows of Cardinal Foley School. What do the green hearts mean? It started with a few girls showing support for a friend by leaving green porch lights on.They chose green because it stood for bravery and positivity. Now there are green lights all over Havertown and other neighborhoods to support Lily, Jack, Hannah and anyone else fighting cancer. In a news report on Lily, she said that the support is everything. She said without the support of the community, this battle would be so much harder. At Cardinal Foley, our way of showing support is green hearts in our windows. Let’s all give cancer fighters a reminder that “we are supporting cancer fighters” and no one fights alone!

AVBM GIRLS BASKETBALL B-TEAM by: Sophia LeStrange

Annunciation is one of the most fun teams I know. We have 10 girls , 5 fifth graders and 5 sixth graders. When players get fouled during the games, teammates make the player feel less stressed out. Mr. Freind is the head coach of this team. We practice once a week on Tuesdays at 4:30. One weekend we had two games. We won some games, then we went on a losing streak. Our last game was on 2/9 . Now we are on to playoffs. We are going to work hard until 2/25 and strive to win the 1st round of playoffs .

Second Grade Zoo Trip

By: Alyssa Littlewood and Brynn Deveney

The second grade is participating in the “Unless Program” sponsored by the Philadelphia Zoo. They are learning about endangered animals as well as protection of our Earth's resources. The animal they selected as their endangered zoo resident to focus their studies on is the Humboldt penguin. They have been reading books about the penguins and even participated in a Skype session (Facetime) with a zoo

expert. According to one of the students, Luke Littlewood, the zoo employee gave them an overview of the penguin life cycle and then answered the students' questions. Another great part of the program is that the students will be visiting the zoo for free. The field trip to the zoo is February 20th and they will get to see real Humboldt penguins in person. Liam Deveney, a second grader, says he is excited to see the penguins in person. The students are all very excited about the trip!

Kindness Corner

By: Alyssa Littlewood

Every morning Mrs. Cartafalsa holds the door open at Annunciation Hall and gives compliments to all who enter the building. When asked why she likes to give compliments, she said “I like to build people up and see a smile on their face.” She was also asked how she comes up with the compliments and she said “I just find something special about them and I let them know.” The last question I asked her was how it makes her feel. She replied “It makes me feel happy when I see someone who might not be having a great day have a smile on their face after I compliment them.” Let’s all try to be more like Mrs.Cartafalsa and maybe the next time you see her, you can give her a compliment!
