A TEQIP III sponsored one week STTP on 'Laboratory Methods for Water & Wastewater Analysis and Air Quality Monitoring' was organized by Civil Engg. Dept. from 20th May to 24th May 2019. Pure water and air are backbone of healthy life and balanced, healthy ecosystems. In this era of development and Industrialization, a big threat of degradation of quality of water and air is prevailing. Similarly, treating wastewater properly is of prime importance too. This STTP was designed to give a sound knowledge and training of the various laboratory techniques for water & wastewater analysis and air quality monitoring. The STTP covered vast range of topics related to analytical techniques for water, wastewater and air quality. About 30 candidates including faculty, research scholars and M.Tech. students of various colleges had registered for the STTP.The candidates were enlightened by various in house as well as external experts from NEERI. The in house faculty included Dr. M. V. Latkar, Dr. Kartik B. And Dr. D. H. Lataye. Practical training sessions were conducted in Environmental Chemistry laboratory and Air Pollution Control Laboratory. The experts from NEERI, Nagpur were Dr. K. V. Each train position is sent to others trains with a +5 m correction on the front and rear end of trains. In case of failure of beacons reading the data, axle counters are installed to locate the position of train. They count the number of axles passing through them and identify the position of train. Each control station is backed up with a sub control station and it is backed up with a station control room. Probability of failure all at once is 1 in 10^12. Maximum speed for which Nagpur metro designed is 80 kmph. Train follow the acceleration and deceleration curve to speed up and control the trains. In case of manual operation speed is limited to 25 kmph. Nagpur metro can be driverless but they are assigned with drivers and drivers are given 2 operations to perform. One is to close the doors of metro before departure and next operation is press the depart button. Beacons help in stooping the train in position with the marked points. In case of fire the train reduces the speed and stops in next station. Probability of unsafe failure is 1 in 10^9 hours (once in 100 years). In general we Indians design the system for to avoid the failures and thus provide backups whereas the foreign countries design a system efficiently so that no failures occurs. Dr. Ana Bras, Associate Professor, Department of Built Environment, Liverpool John Moore's University, UK visited VNIT on May 16-17, 2019 for the track development of on-going collaborative R & D Project funded under Global Challenge Research Fund Scheme of British

thCouncil. Half a day symposium was organized on 17 May in association with Indian Concrete Institute, Nagpur Chapter. I objective was to brief the field experts about the novel construction materials and understand the perception of filed experts about transfer of technology from Laboratory to Field. In all around 20 delegates participated in the event. The Indian Project Investigators Dr. R V Ralegaonkar, Dr. M. V Madurwar and Dr. V A Mhaisalkar participated and coordinated the event.

The first GIAN course of the Civil Engineering Department was conducted by the course co-ordinators, Dr. Magesh Madurwar and Dr. Rahul Ralegakar during May 06 to 11, 2019. The course was conducted on the topic “Global Perspective To Achieve Low Carbon Built Environment”. The topic mainly covered the concepts of carbon footprint, sustainable technologies, energy efficiency, and the waste minimization. Many innovative ways of learnings were incorporated in the course. Dr. Anil Kashayp, Head, Department of Geography and Environmental Management, University of the West of England,

Bristol was the foreign speaker invited for the event. Around 30 participants were registered for the course

Construction Industry Development Council recently honored Dr. Swapnil P Wanjari, Assistant Professor in Civil th
