WaterfrontResurgent after too many years in the doldrums, Liverpool’s Waterfront really is world-class. With the new extension to the Leeds/Liverpool canal scything through the Pier Head, the jaunty new Museum of Liverpool, the scrubbed up Three Graces (the triptych of grand buildings of which the Liver Building is best known) and the handsome huddle of warehouses making up the Albert Dock, the city has returned to the river in style. The Dock’s museums and galleries, bars and restaurants can easily fill a half day’s exploration and, should you itch to get closer to the water you’ve a few options: you can take a ‘ferry ‘cross the Mersey’ or try your hand at canoeing (or a range of other watersports) at the Watersports Centre. Further south, the promenade walk of Riverside Drive offers great river views all the way to the pretty Festival Gardens.

DR YUE HUANG Civil Engineering

“I take a great satisfaction from seeing students motivated by my work. I enjoy seeing them develop the skills to become competent engineers, achieve academic success and have a real impact in industry.”

Yue has lectured at LJMU since 2012 and enjoys the teaching-research balance of his post which enables him to achieve his professional development goals. He previously worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham and, before that, as a Research Scientist with Scott Wilson Ltd.

His main research interests include: environmental life cycle assessment; road pavement and materials; road safety; traffic management in the urban environment; sustainable construction; recycling and urban water management.

A big badminton fan, Yue is rarely able to practise his sport as he spends most of his spare time acting as chief book reader and swimming coach to his young son.

DR WILLIAM ATHERTON Civil Engineering

“I particularly enjoy being a director of studies for PhD students engaged in various areas of research related to civil engineering and environmental impacts. I enjoy supporting students as they progress.”

Bill’s teaching role at LJMU began on a sessional basis after the completion of his undergraduate degree, leading to a full-time position as a lecturer/senior lecturer a couple of years later. During this period, he completed a PhD based on safety aspects in the bulk storage industry.

Bill’s current research interests include the catastrophic failure of storage vessels; environmental damage from oil spills and land use planning; wave impact on structures; the effect of global warming on rainfall; waste management and the effects of landfill leachate on the environment and the stabilisation of soft soils using nano-technology and waste by-products.

During his time as an undergraduate student, Bill joined the students union sub aqua club and has continued to pursue his interest as a BSAC qualified sports diver.

Our peopleOur academics have the specialist knowledge and industry insight to make a real difference to your future. Here are just some of the tutors based in the Department of Civil Engineering.

PROFESSOR HASSAN K AL NAGEIM Structural Engineering

“I enjoy using my extensive experience in managing and developing courses in engineering, building maintenance management and building surveying to enhance our offering at LJMU.”

Hassan is a chartered engineer and member of the British Engineering Council. He has supervised at least 16 successful UK PhD students as director of studies and has been an external examiner for over 24 other PhD students. He has worked as adjunct dean at Ghana Polytechnic and as an external examiner/advisor at Wolverhampton University and the University of Ulster.

A member of the strategic planning and educational committees for two Engineering and Materials Institutions in the UK, Hassan’s specific research interests include steel and concrete structures and pavement engineering: analysis, design, evaluation and optimisation; laboratory physical modelling; innovations, research and developments in sustainable construction materials and the use of IT and non-destructive testing in materials and structures.

In his spare time, Hassan chairs a charitable trust, plays football and tennis, enjoys walking and is involved in his local community.

With an undergraduate and masters-level qualification from the University of Babylon in Iraq, Khalid Hashim came to LJMU to study for an MPhil leading to a PhD.

“I chose to study at LJMU as the university came highly recommended by friends who had already studied here. I also found the staff extremely friendly and helpful during the application process and Liverpool is, of course, a multi-cultural city with people from all over the world.

When I began my studies I had certain goals but over time the university gave

me more and more knowledge so that my achievements have way outstripped my original expectations. LJMU really does support you to achieve. It provides all the equipment, facilities and resources you need and the technicians are always ready to help however they can. During my time here I have even been lucky enough to attend three fully-funded international conferences.

Of all the great experiences the University has given me, however, I think the golden opportunity has been the chance to teach at undergraduate level. To be able to say that you have taught for a year in a great

UK university like John Moores is very important.

I would absolutely recommend Liverpool as a place to study, it is very easy to settle here and make friends. The prices are reasonable, the location is great and there are good transport connections.

LJMU has improved my knowledge and research skills so much that I would now be happy to work in any research centre and would not hesitate to apply for any job. The university has been exactly the right place for me to undertake my project.”
