black, white or simply anything festive. The final no brainer is the sultry red dress. It pays tribute to the day of love like no other hue. If you’re in the mood for a slight deviation, try pink. Add an element of high fashion with a print – say leopard print or a painterly one in a coat, shoes or a belt. Like to stick to the classics, the little black dress with red accents is your answer. You cannot go wrong with it! Show off red accents by way of a bold red lip, red stilettos or red nails. In the mood for something girly, pull that floral dress out of the closet and put it on. Get funky by pairing it with a boxy blazer or leather jacket to really set a contrast. Slip into an adorable dress, a pretty hairdo and heels that will help you sail through the perfect night feeling loved.

Quirky loveA quirky top will really make you stand out in the crowd that wears predictable colours

Tips to make the occasion a little steamier - The classics work always –lingerie, candles, music, wine, and good lighting! Write your loved one a poem, or a limerick, and if you can’t do that, a text. Loungewear is essential if the party is for two and indoors. Relax and do your thing! You can never go wrong with pink champagne. For the men, a blazer, a bow tie, and something shiny is always a good option if taking the lady out for a night about town.

and silhouettes on Valentine’s Day. It’s subtle, no doubt, but a fun, cute print in hot pink or fire red will also pay homage to this day of love. Pair with denims, a skirt and top with a red jacket or a muffler in hues of red and pink to stay true to the colour of the day. Moustaches, kitties, owls, scissors, dragons, random graphics, hearts, icons, you name it; prints that take quirky and place it firmly in the stylish domain are your options. Try something different this Valentine’s and surprise a loved one or friends by unleashing the eccentric side of you!

Hot heels Shoes maketh any outfit perfect and no outfit is justified without a pair of seriously sexy shoes. A pair in insane red or fiery fuchsia is your winning options, although nothing says quite as sexy as a pair of sky high black stilettos. A sloppy pair of shoes can really bring your outfit down even if your clothes are perfect to the hilt. Always remember to invest in a few good pairs instead of several crass ones that do not serve the purpose. For a dress, you could go with a predictable but beautiful pair of high

One V-Day survival item that every single girl needs: • Lots of chocolate. • Red Chanel lipstick.• Perfume is essential. • Realistic expectations.• An eyebrow pencil. • Great girlfriends!• A great cocktail dress that makes you feel

beautiful is a must-have.• A slick leather jacket or a killer pair of heels!

heels that will not let you down style-wise or you could be a little unpredictable and pair a cute dress and leather jacket with a pair of ankle booties. Cute kitten heels look great with flirty girly numbers while ballerinas go well with skirts and capris. Either way take your shoes very seriously as they can make or break an outfit.

Accessory to love While at this point, we’d love to say diamonds are your best friends on this day but there are sweet jewels, candy-coloured rings, heart-shaped clutches, cute bows and so much more. An accessory can be the perfect accent to an otherwise plain outfit. A red scarf can instantly set the mood for Valentine’s Day when added to a mono-tone dress or a vintage love-brooch to a shirt-skirt combination, red tights or stockings can add just the right pizzazz to your ensemble. The key is to keep it minimal but classy. Pick out statement accessories and work with those. A pair of stud earrings, a bunch of midi-rings, an ear cuff, a bold wrist cuff, collar pins, so much to play around with. An accessory-less outfit does look a tad drab so make sure to accessorise well when dressing up for Valentine’s.

Romance-filled fashion is not a new fad. It’s a classic trend the ebbs and neaps with every passing fashion season. There are

quintessential feminine styles palpable in Spring/ Summer 2014 that can be played around with and dressed up or down. From metallic tops to pretty florals, perfect pleats to a shirt borrowed from the man’s closet, these romantic trends grace the feminine form with immense grace and style.

Luxe metal A quick look at fashion weeks around the world showed that romantic dressing is ruling the roost in the first quarter of this fashion season. It is the time to shine officially and metallics are dancing in the spotlight. One has to be

careful with this trend because it can easily lead you into the tacky category. Metallics are taking on a luxurious tone with opulent golds, stunning silvers and lavish lames. Lanvin focused primarily on bold metallic fabrics this season with a sporty outlook while Dries van Noten dipped their brush in the romantic can and came out with beautiful prints and leisurely silhouettes. Also noticed in this designer’s collection was the gold Midas touch with gold accents all over to infused in minute details like pleats. Givenchy brought a metallic spring forth with tribal influenced designs. Earthy colours with bronzed metallic tones added just the right amount of glam to the flowing silhouettes.

Pretty pleatsNothing screams romantic as much as

a pretty high-tea pleated skirt. Pleats sashayed down global runways with a lot of aplomb and cutesy this season. Designers gave pleats their own take with a wide array of masculine as well as feminine looks. Haider Ackermann, for example, concentrated on androgynous aspects boasting a good amount of pleated details. At Lanvin, pleat embellishments found space in pretty frocks in the metallic palette. Texturized lames and rich brocades made the pleats really stand out and claim their own spot. Dutch designers Viktor & Rolf took inspiration from the typical schoolgirl uniform and tossed up their own version on the pleated skirt, shirt and blazer. They dabbled with the proportion and volume giving the entire look a very avant-garde feel. At Celine, vintage took prominence with colourful designs in sheer and pleated skirts.

Floral fiesta Florals are an integral part of the romantic wardrobe. Spring runways have been flooded by all things floral but with a clear distinction between soft hand-brushed florals and abstract bold strokes of florals. Jungle florals

at Hermès stood out prominently in oversized but simple silhouettes. Florals were spun in a different weave at Dolce & Gabbana in a Grecian manner. Romantic and dreamy were the words to describe the collection of this star-duo. Tory Burch’s collection was a complete contrast with a garden being brought alive in his trés prêt range. Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs used medium size flowers in dual tones whilst Emporio Armani and Marni piled colourful flowers with foliage to create depth in their designs. Fleetwood Mac brought floaty dreamy dresses on to the ramp with midi-lengths and wallpaper flowers on dark backgrounds. Slits on those frocks enhanced the sexy element of these dresses. Dress romantic and feel romantic for it is the season to be in love.

Boyfriend bluesThe stereotypical menswear shirt has drawn serious attention this season. It has been feminized, tied-up, worn open-collared and open-buttoned, elongated, made in softer fabrics and basically gone in for a serious haul around to fit into a woman’s wardrobe. That being said, none of this reworking has taken away from the boyish feel of this menswear staple. At Nina Ricci, the show opened with a curated collection of white shirts that have been remade throwing out onto the runway really stunning results. Saint Laurent’s boyfriend shirt went back to the 80s with the rock and roll chic vibe. Jackets were worn with the shirt to bring on a very androgynous feel to the upcoming season. Hérmes had a very relaxed take on this wardrobe basic where white shirts were teamed with slouchy trousers or leather jackets letting off a very cool yet chic air. Balenciaga’s Alexander Wang created a white shirt dress that was a very refreshing take on the boyfriend’s shirt.

What’s cuter than a snuggle-up movie date on Valentine’s Day. Team a cable-knit sweater dress with knee-length boots and a cute coloured satchel for a casual affair. A jacket with khakhi chinos are ideal for the guy with easy slip-ons.

For a man, the task of dressing up for any occasion may not take up as much time and planning as a woman,

but it does take some amount of thought. Vinod Rana brings to you key pieces that you must have in your

wardrobe to make dressing up a lot easier

The most important thing is to keep things simple. Don’t be sporting anything outlandish, attention grabbing or outrageous so as to bring your personality to the fore and more importantly, this

day has to be all about her, so keep it toned down. Be comfortable because it will show in your body language. Apart from that, always dress for the occasion.

wearsValentine

If you are going for the casual date, then a ribbed sweater with a pair of comfortable trousers or denims is the way to go. Making Valentine’s Day a formal affair, then a wide lapel jacket sets the mood.

/bag it

Page 41: Citywalker Jan Feb 2014

Formal fareA little unusual for Valentine’s Day to attend a formal event but if you do find yourself having to attend one, first check dress code, if any. If there isn’t any, then a formal gig will call for a suit at the least and if it’s totally over the top, a tuxedo is your answer. Whatever the case may be, a man must own a trusty navy suit in his wardrobe. Wear with a white dress shirt, a bow tie and black Oxfords.

Drinks around townIf the idea is to have drinks and then head for a night out, you could dress up or down depending on where you are going. That being said, it is Valentine’s Day and it does call for some thought. A pair of slim jeans with a shirt topped by a complementing v-neck jumper or cardigan is one way to go. Carry a leather jacket and wear loafers. Another way to go is chinos with a t-shirt and denim jacket sporting a casual and cool look.

Cinematic coolThis one is easy to dress for since at a movie-date one spends most of the time in the dark anyway. A blazer or a smart jacket showing that you are making the effort with a casual t-shirt, easy chinos and boots is ideal. Want to dress down, replace the blazer with a cardigan, trench or an easy pullover. Just don’t be cheap about the drinks and popcorn!

Night-inIf the plan is to stay in and have a home-cooked meal the dress code can be just about anything from loungewear to dressy to simply your pyjamas. Either way, you could pull up your denims, a casual check shirt and a v-neck jumper. Keep it comfy and make it a date to remember. The key things to look out for when dressing up for Valentine’s Day is remember where you are going and are comfortable with what you are wearing. You do not want to spend your time with her adjusting your attire when you should be paying attention to her. An uncomfortable man makes an uncomfortable date. Try to live up to her expectations and be yourself.

Thefash-bratThe holidays are just about getting over and it’s time to go back to school. So much excitement, so much to look forward to and a whole lot of brand new clothes! Vinod Rana brings to you a few trends that are standing out in the kiddos’ department at the start of the year

A lot of fashion for the kids is reflective of what happens in the fashion arena for adults. The winter chill is still there and spring isn’t

here just yet, so the woolies, the cute sweaters, preppy cardigans and beanie caps are all still trending on the little ones. Wrap them up stylishly and you’ll have heads turning to get a second look at them.

Active wear Active wear or sporty garments have found a liking in the little girls department too. Cute, sporty options for the little ladies have surfaced on the shelves of kiddie stores. This has come to play as a reflection of what their mothers are sporting. The ability to go from a class to lunchtime to after –school sports without too many changes in costumes is ideal for kids on the go.

Geek trendsThe geek chic look has been around for a while in the fashion world for adults but that trend has now percolated to the kiddie arena too. Peter Pan collars, prim and propah looks, patent shoes; the complete junior set is trending in a big way with the kids. If your kid needs or has glasses, then it just automatically completes the look. Thick-rimmed spectacles have the smarty pants yet stylish look down to pat.

Tailor-made shoesOf course, kids these days have it better than us. Could you think of customized shoes for yourself when you were younger? Chances are no. If your child loves drawing or you’ve caught them doodling when they should be doing their homework, channelize that art to their shoes. Hand them their pair of shoes and let them have a go at it. Brands these days are doing it anyway, so why not have your child personalize his or her very own pair of sneakers or canvas shoes. Paintable or re-paintable shoes are also available aplenty for kids to satisfy that artistic tingle that has them scribbling all over anything and everything handy.

Jegging JaneJeggings are a great way to dress your little girl up stylishly for winters. They come in a variety of colours and can be mixed and matched with any outfit. Prints, florals, animal prints, textures and fabrics, jeggings can easily be worn with a simple top in a bold colour or mixed with another pattern or an oversized sweater, either way; kids can easily pull a mismatched look artfully!

Modish modeSkinny jeans, colour blocking, A-line dressings, motorcycle jackets and cute accessories are hugely popular with the children these days. You could also go the monochrome-with-a-pop-of-colour

way to make them really stand out. Accessorise them well so as to bring out their cuteness but make sure you don’t go overboard lest they start looking older than their age.

Children these days are very observant and will read their likes and dislikes to you from the back of their palms. They know the colours they like, the styles they fancy, the shoes they want and the accessory that looks best on them. So, if you have a fashion-conscious child who knows how to stay on trend, you know what to do!

Let’s wade through the innumerable beauty tips that we are bombarded with daily and sift the Wikipedia from the old wives tales. So much beauty advice, what’s true and what’s bogus, one simply doesn’t know what to listen to anymore. Vinod Rana picks out eight myths and drives them into the ground for you

jan-feb 1444

/beauty spot

thoseBunkmyths

Page 47: Citywalker Jan Feb 2014

OD-ing on chocolates leads to pimples

Well, it depends because this can be true and it can be a myth. Chocolate has high quantities of refined sugar which is said to lead to acne breakouts. So the real criminal here is the refined sugar. Everything in moderation is the rule that should be applied here.

Shaving causes the hair to come back thicker

This is a popular belief and it’s a myth. What you are feeling is growing back possibly is the blunt end of hair that was left behind while

You must have heard these beauty beliefs time and again and even tried a few of them but don’t lose heart if one of them is listed below. If something works for

you, it simply does. Here’s the list of common beauty myths that we’ve all believed at some point in time.

Foundation with SPF offers the skin protection from the sun

This happens to be a myth. Pigments that are present in the foundation do not provide as much protection as is needed to obstruct the rays of the sun. So, if you are spending the day in the sun, make sure you apply some actual sunscreen under your makeup.

Too much makeup leads to breakoutsNo, it doesn’t. Especially not if you clean your brushes thoroughly and toss out old makeup. Wash your brushes in tepid water with a little bit of soap in it and leave to dry naturally. What’s important is to make sure all your makeup is off your face before you go to bed. Bid adieu to breakouts!

Chopping off your tresses often will help it grow faster

This is a commonly believed myth. But think about it logically. Your hair stems from the root, so how does trimming the end aid in faster growth. Yes, do trim your hair regularly for healthy hair. A trim combats all those dried and tired ends of hair but it does not help hair grow faster. That’s all nature’s doing!

Plucking atop the eyebrows is tabooAll those stranded strands above the brow need to go without a doubt. This goes without saying that a well-shaped eye brow is always a good thing but an over-plucked eyebrow or an over grown one, both are a no-no. In such arenas of beauty, trust yourself with a professional.

Pull out a grey hair and your entire head of hair will turn grey

We’ve heard this only too often. The first thing most people hear when they are looking worriedly in the mirror at their wanton grey strand is that don’t pull it out or more will sprout. This is untrue. There are only a limited number of follicles on the scalp. So whether you pull that strand of white hair out or no, ageing happens only when it has to.

razor-shaving was taking place. This has become such a famous myth but did you stop to think that when we wax, hair comes back naturally.

Split ends are repairableSplit ends are not repairable. You can get all the oiling and hair spas needed to boost moisture in your hair but what’s really needed

is monthly or bi-monthly trip to the salon just for a trim. Use treatments, masks and

heating products if your hair is subjected to any heat.

Take a note of these tips and find yourself smiling at the extra minutes you get on hand.

Pick up a foundation or BB cream that targets multiple needs. One of the easiest ways to get it all done in a matter of minutes is to have a multipurpose base. Buy one that addresses all your skincare requirements and also the coverage your skin needs. This helps you get rid of a million little steps in between that take up so much of your morning time. An all-in-one BB cream is an easy beauty fix when you are jammed for time.

With the increasing paucity of time, we are always looking for shortcuts to doing things that are part of our routine. Here are a few ways to cut time spent on your beauty regime into half. Vinod Rana shares them with you

Use the’3’ technique with the blush brush. We aren’t professional makeup artists so doing your cheeks may take up more of your time than you have. A cheat trick to help with contouring your cheeks perfectly, a la Kardashian, is the ‘3’ technique. Quite simply, swirl your brush around the bronzer or blush and begin along the hairline. Trace the number three on the right side of your face by using the brush along the edge of your face, bringing it to the centre of your face under the cheekbone and then back out to the edge again, swiping the jawbone and ending at your chin. Repeat a backwards three on the left side of your face. Blend it all now. Easy and time-saving once you get the hang of it!

Opt for an eye shadow range that buys you minutes. All those million eye shadow colours on the palette can drive you crazy and waste a copious amount of time in the mornings. Use an assigned palette with marked colours for the eyelid, brow bone and crease. This way you do your eyes in seconds with no thought about what shade goes with what. A quick tip, dampen an eyeliner brush, dab it over the darkest shadow and that’s your eyeliner. Both done in a jiffy.

Avoid a face full of makeup and just highlight one aspect. If you are scrunched for time, just amp up one feature of your face. Like smokey eyes and nude glossy lip-balmy lips. A red lipstick with an otherwise clear face will simply add luminosity to your face in an instant and it’ll look like you spent all day primping yourself.

Braid your hair a night before. This helps in creating a fresh and different look with absolutely no time spent on it when you wake up the next morning. When your hair is slightly damp if you’ve washed it the night before else just wet your hair a little and braid them into two braids for soft loose waves, four for medium loose waves and six braids for tight waves. Sleep, wake up, blow dry or use a flat iron on each braid to style it the way you want. Untie each braid and voila! You’re set!

Night out cue Lipstick looking too matte and flat? Reach out for your makeup bag and spice it up in seconds by applying lip gloss at the centre of your lips or if a glittery eye shadow is handy, use that instead. Purse lips to add instant shine and this will also lend a fuller look to your lips while the powdery texture of the eye shadow will help make the lipstick last longer.

Clumpy mascara, don’t fretTightly close your mascara tube and immerse it into a glass of hot water for a few minutes. Make sure the water is not boiling hot but just hot. When you take the tube out, your mascara would have softened with no clumps!

Creamy eye shadow creasesYour favourite eye shadow is of the creamy variety and creases when worn for long. Use this trick to fix it. When you’ve applied the eye shadow, brush a spot of translucent powder lightly on top to keep the colour in place. You basically apply the same rule

when you keep your foundation in place with translucent powder.

Excess blush, no timeYou can’t do your makeup all over again! Grab a clean brush, swirl it around in your translucent powder and swipe it on your cheeks up until it tones down the bright colour on your cheeks. If it’s a cream blush, mix your moisturizer with your foundation on the back of your hand and blend it ever so lightly on your cheeks. This will help tone it down instantly.

The bob hairstyle has been made famous by several iconic people, one that comes to mind instantly being Anna Wintour, long standing editor of the American Vogue. Vinod Rana talks of the bob crop and how it’s gaining popularity galore

here! Bob’s

/style file

48 jan-feb 14

Page 51: Citywalker Jan Feb 2014

A classic haircut that never goes out of style, there is one to flatter any face. There are short bobs, medium bobs and long

bobs to take your pick from. Then there is the angled bob, the asymmetrical bob, the curly bob, the wavy bob and the boy bob for more options. They are a hairstyle that’s been trending for a while now and if you are jonessing for one now, it’s the right time, we say!

Flirtatious bobThis flirtatious bob is all about the length of the bangs falling perfectly on the forehead and the length of the bob at mid-cheek. Deep bangs look great and light as they fall all over the forehead ending just above the eyebrows. This style is breezy and light with the layers blended well enough to grow out beautifully.

HOW TO STYLE: Such styles have a very feather light feel to them, so you don’t need too much product or simply use light formulas. Comb your hair properly and blow dry your hair upside down using a paddle brush to add volume. Dry your hair fully and brush it into place. Use a curling iron to coil the hair to give the ripple effect. This look complements angular and strong jaw-lined faces. Thin or finely textured hair suits this style while thicker hair would simply look fuller. Curly hair is a no-no for this particular bob. Im

Waves to BobThis bob is ideal for those who have naturally wavy or curly hair. Slightly below the chin, it has layers to create movement to the style. A mildly off-centre parting will help maintain balance and is a perfect look for those who don’t want the bob-with-bangs predictable look.

HOW TO STYLE: For those with naturally wavy hair or curls, comb your hair out, scrunch it up and diffuse. Blow dry it and be careful not to brush your hair too much. Take your curling iron and curl all your hair. Brush the waves out with your fingers and flick them out to create some fun. This look is ideal for most face shapes except pear-shaped faces. Those who have thick waves in their hair or full-blown out curls, go for this bob! Im

Bob’s sleekThick bangs towards the eyes makes for this beautiful and trés chic hairstyle. The angles on the side of this bob are directed towards the face giving it a sharp and sleek look.

HOW TO STYLE: Put all your hair forward into the bangs and detangle your hair. Blow dry the bangs down using a round brush so as to not create too much of volume or a bump. The bangs have to fall flat to look sleek. Dry the rest of your head and use an iron to flatten small pieces of flyways and you’ve got a very sleek bob. This style looks great on all face shapes. Thick hair though is must to get this style to look truly chic. Of course, the straighter your hair, the easier it is to get this look.

Chocolate The monarch of aphrodisiacs, this one! Chocolate contains an array of compounds; one of them is called the love chemical, that induces dopamine in the pleasure epicenters of our brain. PEA or the love chemical injects emotions such as euphoria, attraction and excitement while cacao contains tryptophan, a vital element of the neurotransmitter serotonin meant to provoke a feeling of happiness and relaxation.

Almonds Through the ages, almonds have represented fertility. The smell is known to induce passion in women or so was the thinking of writers and poets back in the day. Scientists have also affirmed that almonds contain huge quantities of Vitamin E, fibre and magnesium. The almond myth holds true!

Figs The fig has been known as an arousing stimulant for ages. Figs go way back in history as one of the ancient fruits to be recorded. They find mention in the Bible - Adam and Eve covered their body parts with fig leaves. What’s more, they were also Cleopatra’s favorite fruit and the ancient Greeks thought of them as sacred and held them as symbols of love and fertility.

Garlic Yes, we all know you are rolling your eyeballs back but aside from being smelly, these charming little pods are strong. Garlic is full of allicin, a component that augments blood flow. So keep those garlicky pastes handy and stock up on the mouth-fresheners!

Avocado Some foods are suggestive in shape and avocado is one of them. The Aztecs called it ahuacuatl, or the ‘testicle tree’. The Catholics priests in Spain deemed the fruit to be too offensive looking so they forbade it. All of this being said, avocado is a great booster of immunity and has high doses of folic acid, vitamin B6 and potassium.

Choose a winter sportThe best way to work out in this weather is to choose a sport which

is popular during this time. There are so many games that you can play, the popular ones being skiing or the more homely, badminton and cricket. Seasonal gear is important

As the season changes, we all tend to alter our wardrobe.

You must do the same for your workout as well. Having appropriate workout gear that looks good on you and keeps you warm is a must. Not only will it keep you healthy but also inspire you to exercise more during this season. Warm-up is crucial

Experts advise that a proper warm-up is crucial before

you start exercising. Cold temperatures can make your muscles taut and therefore more prone to injuries. Warming up your body prepares itself for exercise both physically as well as mentally. Warm-ups concentrate on the muscles and allow them to stretch.

Opt for indoor exercisesThe best way to stay encouraged to work out during the winter is

by choosing to do so indoors. Usually when it’s foggy in the morning, going for a walk seems out of the question. Thus compensate your hour-long walk with a 45-minute of free hand exercises or an hour extra at the gym. This way you won’t end up feeling guilty or wasted.

JAPANThe land of the rising sun

The land of the rising sun. The mecca of fashion. Japan has catapulted into one of the oft-visited destinations on any savvy traveller’s list. The past few years has seen several magnificent attractions spring up, hip trends and economic changes and that heady combination has turned Japan into an enticing stop for travelers. Vinod Rana takes a peek into what makes this country a must-see

Japan is a must-visit for any traveler worth his or her salt. A country that takes technology, fashion and food to newer levels, Japan cannot be too far down your list of places to

see. Plan your next holiday there and indulge in all things Japanese.

Surreal JapanIf you’ve heard of sushi, sipped sake and read manga, then you know a little bit about this country that comprises 6800 volcanic islands. It’s like you’ve come to a place outside of the world as you know it. Ancient gods, exquisite craftsmanship, revered customs are juxtaposed with cutting-edge technology, futuristic fashion trends and a modernity that no other country possesses. One minute you’re in high-speed train that’s whisking you from one corner of the country to another while the next you spot a farmer working hard in his fields. You are shopping in a fashionable boutique one day, the next you are rejuvenating in an outdoor hot-spring pool watching cherries blossom or snowfall, either is possible.

HeritageJapan’s heritage is one that speaks of traditions and practices as much as values

and beliefs. While the culture is increasingly turning to the futuristic, old customs and rituals are still rooted in religion or history as well as widely practiced to date. One can experience genuine Japanese heritage without having to dish out a lot of moolah. A visit to a temple, shrine or a castle would lend a glorious insight into the myriad history of this country and how society has developed in Japan. Also, the festivals that are held around the year make their mark on several aspects of tradition and culture, both of which are held highly in Japanese culture. If one is interested in Asian heritage and history, you needn’t look further than Japan.

Cuisine cuesOne of the major attractions of traveling throughout Japan is trying different local cuisines in every town you visit. While sushi is in fact a large part of Japanese heritage, myriad flavors from all around the world have contributed to Japan’s robust foodie culture, attracting more and more culinary figures worldwide to try the new eastern hot spot. It should therefore come as no surprise that Tokyo is ranked the number one food city by Food and Wine magazine, not to mention the fact that Tokyo has more stars in the prestigious Michelin Guidebook than

gorgeous oceans and relax in the beautiful shores of the beaches in Okinawa. For those of you fancy some surfing, catch top waves just an hour away from Tokyo and take trip underwater to get a dekko at the ruins of Ryukyu Archipelago buried deep inside. For all of you sporty travelers, Japan’s the place that will truly get the adrenalin pumping.

Art loveThe vibrant tiered pagodas to the ultra modern glass buildings, the colour and beauty of the prints to the ongoing crazy social commentary, the modern art and architecture of this country has a very characteristic full-bodied style. Nature has always played centrestage for the Japanese artists from time immemorial and it is an aesthetic that is palpable in their art today also. Case in point, the ACROS building in Fukuoka is a great example. Their preserved and esteemed heritage as well as their futuristic bent of mind is clearly visible to travelers in their design and architecture. You’ll find some of the world’s most renowned artists showcasing their talent throughout the country.

any other city in the world. From noodles to sashimi to gourmet French cuisine, Japan has the food to satisfy the most discerning of palettes, as well as the strictest of budgets.

Adventures galoreSnowboarding? Snorkeling? Hiking? Whatever is your favoured outdoor activity, Japan has it and more. Go up the slopes of Nagano, which was where the 1998 Winter Olympics were held. Take a dip in the

Pop culture and fashionThe fashion surpasses any other country in the world. Even the top designers of the fashion world look to the streets of Japan for inspiration and ideas. The pop culture too is one of their biggest exports. The quirky and eccentric sense of style along with Japanese entertainment has the world eating out of their hands. Anime, video games, the latest gadgets and gizmos, Japan is truly the cornerstone of some of the world’s most loved hobbies. Must-readsSapna Krishnan gives you the lowdown on five modern-day reads you must grab the second you see ‘em

The Dork Series By Sidin Vadukut The Dork series consists of two books and is a true and fun read about Robin ‘Einstein’ Varghese’s incredible adventures.

When our author, Sidin Vadukut, moves into a new house in New Delhi, he comes across a set of compact discs stacked away below the kitchen sink. As he runs through the CDs, apart from finding something which most men indulge in, (no, I am not telling you what that is), he also happens to stumble upon Robin’s diary entries.

The book is a rollercoaster of hilarious moments which will have you in splits with every page. While some of us would find certain things a little offensive in the book, I would recommend it for its humor.

2 States By Chetan Bhagat 2 States is the story of Chetan Bhagat’s life. Read the book to find out how the journey towards marriage was no less than a war.

2 States tells the story of Krish from Punjab and Ananya from Chennai. They meet in college and fall in love. After college, they want to take their relationship to the next level. And both families are introduced to each other on graduation day. Thus, begins the roller coaster ride. A riotous and entertaining ride and will definitely have you falling off the chair more than once. Relating to Krish and Ananya’s story isn’t going to be too difficult considering we hear of such stories on a daily basis.

The In (Eligible) Bachelors By Ruchita Mishra Kasturi’s mom thinks it is time for her 24-year old daughter to get married and settle down. How is Kasturi going to convince her mom that she is just not ready for it?

Kasturi is pestered by her mother to meet the shortlisted IIT/IIM boys. When it comes to the daughter’s marriage, the mother makes all the calls. Kasturi falls in love with her boss, Rajeev Sir, but continues to meet the boys her mother has lined up as she is sure her mother won’t accept a non-Brahmin Punjabi boy as her son-in-law. So does she eventually settle down for one of those rich IIT guys, or does she confess to her mom about her love? Grab a copy of the book, now, to find out!

Tuesdays With Morrie By Mitch Albom Tuesdays with Morrie is all about life’s lessons from a professor to his student.

Mitch Albom completes his graduation and promises to keep in touch with his favourite professor Morrie, which he fails to do. His life revolves around journalism, newspapers and celebrities. An interview with his favourite professor on the “Nightline” show reminds him of the promise he made 16 years ago. Morrie is suffering from ALS and knowing that he does not have too much time with his professor, Mitch rushes from one city to another to meet him. They relive the university days and while leaving Mitch makes another promise – to meet Morrie every Tuesday. Tuesdays with Morrie has a lot to offer if you read it with an open mind.

The Twilight Series By Stephenie Meyer The twilight series is about Edward and Bella, their love, togetherness, and forever-ness. Bella Swan has just moved into Forks, to live with her dad. At college, she bumps into Edward Cullen. The Cullen brothers and sisters are considered weird as they do not interact with anybody. But they are drop-dead gorgeous, especially Edward. Bella loses her heart to him the minute she sees him. Enter Jacob Black. Bella gets to know the truth about the Cullens. Through the series, Jacob’s history is revealed. Both sides have a treaty that is maintained, only for them to co-exist. How is Bella going to choose between her love and friend? The twilight series consists of four books – Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. Twilight was also released online, in Edward’s perspective. The book is called Midnight Sun.

beautifulAishwarya Rai Bachchan is a name that has become

almost synonymous to beauty. Ever since she was crowned Miss World in 1994, there has been no

looking back. Having been a successful model and actress, she is also a mother now but looks as ravishing as ever. Sayanti Banerjee takes notes as

this diva shares a few secrets about what keeps her beautiful and on top of the world!

I love eye makeup and for Indian women, nothing

works better than kajal. It works anytime of the day.

Even after two decades of being crowded as the world’s most beautiful woman, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has not lost her charm. She did get rave reviews about the

post baby fat, but this diva is back in shape and how. Juggling work and play time with her baby now seems easy so she is planning to get back on celluloid soon but not disclosing by when. Till then her fans can get a few glimpses of her from the various endorsements she is a part of.

What is the one beauty product that you cannot do without? I love eye make-up and for Indian women nothing works better than kajal. So apart from movies or appearances at social events, I would always put on some kajal before stepping out of home. In fact, it works anytime of the day and for a party one can always play up with eye shadow and more.

What is your beauty secret? Honestly, I don’t have any. I really need to thank God and my parents for the amazing genes that I was born with. My physicality or the way I look is something that I feel

blessed about and there has been no effort from my end. I however do believe in a healthy lifestyle so I try to do my bit like following a good diet, exercise regime and sleep on time as much as possible.

Who do you consider the most beautiful woman in the world? My mother Brinda Rai of course and now that I have a 2 year old daughter; I have to say Aradhya too.

Since little girls love make up, does Aradhya reach out for any of your make-up tools? Not yet, thankfully. She is too young for make-up now.

There is a rage in the beauty industry about anti-aging products and treatments. What are your views about the same? Thankfully I did not need to indulge in any of them yet and would not really want to opt for anti-aging solutions. I prefer to age gracefully but to each their own, so I cannot comment on what any other person should or should not do in their lives.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan enjoys

motherhood, it being the best

role she has been handed so far.

A new

you! It’s the New Year and each year the resolutions seem the same. The same old commitments

to change your life for the better but you are not alone in resolving to make that change.

Shruti Tomar lists the most popular resolutions that one makes and should try to stick to.

Lose weight – One that tops most lists, this resolution is by far the toughest to stick to but also

the one that provides most joy when adhered to. The basics of losing weight are that one needs to

take in fewer calories than used. Create a plan to eat healthy, on time and be sure to include physical

activity. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and low unsaturated fats, low on Trans fats,

sodium and added preservatives.

Get a better job – Easier said than done! If one works at it, it isn’t half as difficult. Identify

your interests, your strengths and your weaknesses and then decide the right thing for you to do.

Already at one that you like then see how you can up it to be more satisfying with better rewards.

Move out of your comfort zone and take the plunge.

Save and invest – A tough one, again but a lot more doable as compared to other resolutions. Look

at it like a challenge and save something every day. Keep a jar in your cupboard in which you donate an

assigned amount daily, weekly or monthly. Another way of saving and investing is work toward a goal;

this could be a house, a car or even an indulgence. Keep putting money aside and lock it up so that’s it’s

not easily accessible to you.

Manage stress – Not all stress is bad. Reduce the bad kind of stress by planning ahead,

deciding which tasks need to be done first and preparing ahead for stressful events. Take the

time to notice when you are stressed and try to relax then. Get active, eat healthy, switch off the

Internet and telephone and spend time with friends and family.

Reduce, reuse and recycle – Learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle. Help the environment

by saving energy, natural resources and money. The best way to reduce waste is to not create

it in the first place. Prevent pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money and use

products to their fullest extent.
