An Exploratory Study of Indigenous Knowledge of

‘Green Technology’ (IKGT) Among Orang Asli in

Malaysia

Regina Lambin1*, Norwaliza Abdul Wahab2, Goh Swee Choo3,

Ramlee Mustapha4, Ramle Abdullah5

Abstract Presently there are numerous environmental issues and challenges

of the nation that need to be addressed at all levels with the coorperation of

various parties to protect the earth life support systems. Orang Asli

Indigenous Knowledge of ‘Green Technology’ (IKGT) is a naturalistic and

environmentally friendly technology which is used to conserve and reduce

the human impact on the earth as well as to create a way of sustainable

development. This study aims to examine the use of Orang Asli indigenous

knowledge of their ‘green technology’ to practice environmental

sustainability and conserve natural resources now and later on to make the

earth ‘greener’. The study employed a descriptive case study qualitative

approach which used in-depth interview, field observation, and document

analysis as an exploration instruments. The design of the conceptual

framework was framed based on 2 themes; Indigenous Medicine (IM) and

Indigenous Handicraft (IH). This research was carried out at Orang Asli

settlements in 4 states: i) Selangor, ii) Perak, iii) Terengganu and iv) Pahang

which involved six informants aged 30 and older. The findings of the study

will be valuable for the purpose of sharing Orang Asli IKGT and provide the

main strategies in which the benefits of utilizing their green practices in the

future world would overweight its cost. Orang Asli IKGT’s framework can

be used by the current society as a guide to lessen carbon footprint and others

harms evolved. In addition, it serves as a basic or medium for all levels;

institutional, regional, national, and local scales which aspire to launch

sustainability programs locally or internationally as well as expanding

economic and market forces while safeguarding cultural diversity.

Socialization Challenges Faced by Novice Teachers in

Orang Asli Schools

Norhuda Binti Zaini*

Abstract The first year of teaching has been described as a time of survival

for a novice teacher. It is also during this time that many novice teachers get discouraged and abandon their teaching careers. However, relatively little

attention has been given to novice teachers in Orang Asli (indigenous)

schools in Malaysia. This paper focuses on the challenges the novice teachers

faced in their initial stages of work in Orang Asli schools and on how they address these problems. This case study was carried out to decipher the voices

of the novice teachers regarding their problems and socialization they face

during the first year in Orang Asli schools. Therefore, socialization involves

a critical transition in which teachers may reject, accept, or adapt to the school culture, and its outcome permeate teachers’ feelings and determine their

decision in staying in the school.

The Influnece of Culture in Speaking Skills Among

Esl Students in Malaysian Classroom: A Literature

Review

Suzana Muhamad Pilus1*, Norwaliza Abdul Wahab2, Norhuda

Abstract As globalization and development of technology demand

employees to be highly-skilled, graduates need to establish their employability skills especially their English proficiency in order to help the

country maximising its output. Studies have indicated that Malaysian

students are lacking in their English language and communication skills

which are vital to land a promising job. In Malaysia, the classroom comprises students from diverse background not only in terms of their native language

but also in terms of culture. This study aims to investigate the influence of

culture in Speaking Skills among ESL Students in Malaysian classroom.

From the analysis of selected articles, it is evident that there is a strong influence of culture on ESL Speaking Skills. Therefore, it should be taken

into consideration that cultural diversity may indirectly affluence ESL

Students’ Speaking Skills. The implications can benefit Malaysian students

and syllabus writers to take into consideration when they are writing their school syllabus.

Combating with Unresolved Issue of Pirating: To

What Extent Price Differences Moderate the

Relationship between Intention and Purchase

Behaviour of Pirated CDs?

Nor Azila, Mohd Noor1*, Azli, Muhammad2, Abdullah, A

Ghani3

Pirated products are not a new challenge to manufacturers all over the world.

The problem had even before the development of the advance technology

today. Pirated products can be divided into many categories such as medicine,

fashion, movies, music and many more. There are many past studies on

pirated product issues. Majority of them focus on determinants that influence

consumers’ intentions to purchase pirated products while only a few studies

investigate the relationship between intention to purchase and the actual

purchase behavior of pirated products. This study examines the relationship

between behavioral intention and purchase behavior of pirated CDs and the

moderating role of price differences between intention and purchase

behavior. An intercept survey involving 371 respondents was conducted at

hot spot areas selling pirated CDs in Malaysia. A self-administered

questionnaire was designed using established scales. Using a questionnaire,

data were collected and analyzed to test the hypotheses. Data were analyzed

using descriptive analysis, correlational analysis and regression analysis. The

results show that behavioral intention and purchase behavior is positively

related and the strength of this relationship is stronger with the existence of

price differences between original and pirated CDs. This study offers

theoretical and practical contributions for academics and professionals. This

research provides an understanding of consumers’ pirated product purchase

behavior. The research findings can be used by policy makers and original

product producers to formulate strategies to curb counterfeiting activities.

Examining the Potential of Augmented Reality to

Improve Health and Welfare of Animals Herded

Using Virtual Fencing

Prof. Santhosh Simon PhD1*, Ajith Prasad2

Abstract Setting up fences and fetching animals is a highly time consuming

and labour intensive process. Virtual Fencing allows farmers to set up a

controlled grazing environment. The technology requires animals to wear an

Electronic Containment Device which receives the radio signals from the

control centre. Whenever the animal approaches the virtual boundary, an

audible alarm will be emitted by the device as a cue to avoid further progress

towards the virtual fence which may result in a mild electric shock. Even

though the technology is promising, there is limited information on how

Virtual Fencing affects the behaviour and welfare of the animal. Augmented

Reality devices helps to get feel of an imaginary environment augmented to

the real one. Combining the Augmented Reality with Virtual Fencing may

help to control and herd the animals with a proactive approach. The aim of

this trial was to study the responses of an animal to Augmented Reality

stimuli and evaluate the potential of Augmented Reality to improve the

welfare of animals herded using Virtual Fencing. The Electronic

Containment Device fitted to cattle was modified to incorporate some

features of Augmented Reality.
