Should I Stake My Trees When I Plant Them?

Staking trees has been a common practice for many years. The process of staking trees usually consists of driving one or more stakes in the ground near a tree, and then somehow connecting the tree to the stake. This was done for many reasons.

You will probably notice that the majority of trees that City crews plant are not staked. This is because most healthy trees that are properly planted do not require staking. A healthy tree with a proper sized root ball should be able to support itself in the landscape, support the canopy of the tree, and grow roots into the surrounding area to support the tree. Staking a tree can result in a weakened tree trunk, insufficient root growth to anchor the tree, and eventual girdling and death of the tree if staking materials are not removed in time.

If a new tree is planted in an area with consistent winds, planted in an area with sandy soils, or if the tree gets knocked or blown over after planting, staking may be necessary to establish a healthy root system for the tree. If staking is required, follow these guidelines:

Posts should be installed outside of the new tree root ball.Tree should be connected to posts using a wide and flexible material that allows the tree to move naturally with the breeze. Hose and wire and/or ground anchors should never be used. The tree should be allowed some movement to support proper trunk and root growth. In most cases, all staking materials should be removed one year after planting. For questions regarding trees or urban forestry, please

contact the Buildings and Grounds Department at 801-489-5742.

Springville City Storm Drain Watch: Leaves, Grass Clippings,

and Dirt in GuttersSpringville City is committed to keeping our water clean. We

also try to minimize the risk of property damage due to flooding. There are, however, many challenges to keeping our storm water clean. Although the City regularly sweeps streets and cleans storm drains and sumps, we still need your help.

Fall weather is fast approaching. Leaves can plug storm sewer inlets and cause localized flooding. Please help us by not blowing your leaves to the street and keeping them out of the gutters.

Dirt and sediment are also concerns, as they can affect the quality and quantity of water that can be handled by the storm sewer system.

Suspended sediment makes water unpleasant for recreation and when it settles out, it covers river and lake bottoms causing problems for aquatic life.

Storm water also carries pollutants such as hydrocarbons and heavy metals deposited on streets by cars, pesticide and herbicide residue, and anything that anyone dumps in the storm sewer conveyance system.

In addition, pollutants can be washed down the gutter into the storm sewer system when people hose off their driveways and sidewalks, wash their car in the driveway, and fail to correct sprinklers that spray onto the sidewalks, driveways and streets.

Citizen ResponsibilityPlease do your part by:

Composting leaves and grass Sweeping driveways, sidewalks and guttersRecycling used oil and antifreezeCleaning up after petsReporting illegal dumping by calling 801-491-2780

Together we can keep our lakes, rivers and drinking water

clean and uncontaminated

We have heard from some of our residents, but would like anyone who has received a survey to return it as soon as possible.
