City Rail Link – Building Façade documentationAuckland CBD
The Project
As part of the City Rail Link project the client was
required to do a pre-construction survey of the 8
buildings surrounding and including the CPO
building. This was to document the condition and
state of all 8 buildings before construction
commenced.
3D Laser Scanning was utilized to capture the as-
built data of the existing buildings, paying
attention to the exterior walls or cladding of each
of the buildings. On 2 of the buildings
documentation of the roof was required. This was
critical in ensuring that a complete digital record
was documented of all 8 buildings prior to
construction commencing.
Time was saved by collecting all relevant digital
dimensional and façade data of the exteriors of 8
buildings in only 5 days as opposed to
conventional methods that would take
considerably longer to achieve.
The Delivery
Upon processing of the collected data a fully
registered 3D point cloud was created for the entire
site and each individual building from the scan
data. Those point clouds were then exported to
Autodesk ReCap for use in an AutoCAD drawing
Each building was delivered with the ReCap file,
an AutoCAD drawing with the scan data imported
into it, and a Navisworks file with the scan data
imported for easy 3D navigation of each building.
Key Details
Project: External Laser Scan of 8 existing buildings at Britomart in the Auckland CBD
Location: Auckland CBD
Duration: 5 Days
Sector: Building Survey
Project Team: Brian Kelly
Benefits• Accurately measured all existing features• 5 days to accurately record 20,000m²• Re-used data for multiple additional design
measurements• No working at height for elevated
measurements• Recorded the “hard to achieve” measurements
