city park for everyone talking points

Who is “City Park For Everyone Coalition” and what are our concerns? City Park For Everyone Coalition is the alliance of New Orleanians working together to halt the development of the new golf course while preserving the park's continued open access of green spaces and its abundance of wildlife. We seek to educate individuals, communities, and government officials on the value of multiuse, natural public space and the importance of actively working to include affected citizens in decisionmaking regarding public spaces. We seek equal access to the park for all citizens of New Orleans by providing sustainable, nonprivatized, alternative revenue methods while securing greater transparency and accountability from City Park Leadership. Our Concerns: The net effect of this new golf course is to privatize what is public space for New Orleanians of all socioeconomic backgrounds. On any given day you can find local citizens flying kites, picnicking, jogging, fishing, and enjoying these wild spaces in many ways. These citizens will be shut out and unable to afford the new golf course fees which may be as high as a $250 daily to golf. The footprint of the new golf course will destroy wildlife habitat, making it harder for all the wild creatures who pass through the park to survive. This greenspace currently serves as a refuge for songbirds, butterflies, reptiles, raptors and other wildlife. City Park’s planning process has been opaque and the board has pushed a single idea without considering alternatives. Despite there being a clear majority of public comments in opposition to a new golf course at the park, the board has pushed through this plan behind closed doors. It is likely this golf course will actually LOSE money. There is no evidence that the city needs this golf course. The golf course plans include $10 million of state funds & FEMA funs. The North Course is underutilized & Audubon Park’s course has been losing money for years. A $30 million state funded bailout was needed to keep the TPC (westbank pro course) alive in 2010. This is all of our tax dollars. The Board of City Park is neither democratic nor representative of New Orleans. 1/3 of the board is appointed by local & state government. The other 2/3 of the board is nominated by board members and only the board votes on nominations. The board is 95% white and doesn’t represent all local neighborhoods, while New Orleans is majority AfricanAmerican, working and middle class. Our Demands: Immediately halt construction of this planned golf course between Harrison and Filmore Avenues. Remove the fencing and leave these public spaces open to the citizens of New Orleans. ReOpen the public comment process, and proceed democratically with serious consideration and response to public opinion upon the use of the current area slated for a new golf course. Reform the board of City Park. New Orleans City Council should take immediate action for reform, so that there is a democratic and representative board. The board should represent all neighborhoods, and all socioeconomic classes of the citizens of New Orleans. New Orleans City Council should put a millage up for vote for the citizens of New Orleans so that the park can have a consistent revenue stream and the board will be accountable to local government.
