WHAT IS AN OFFICIAL PLAN ?
An Official Plan deals mainly with issues such as:
• Where new housing, industry, offices and shops will be
located.
• What services like roads, sewers, parks and schools will
be needed and where they will be located.
Describes How & Where We Grow
• Identifies when, and in what order, parts of our
community will grow.
WHAT IS AN OFFICIAL PLAN ?
Implementation
Identifies the methods to achieve the objectives and policies
of the Official Plan (Secondary Plans, Block Plans,
Community Improvement Plans, etc.)
Collaboration
Developed through planning analysis,
research, interdisciplinary collaboration,
and dialogue within the City, with external
stakeholders, and the wider community
BRAMPTON’S STRATEGIC PLAN
• It is the intent of the Official Plan to
advance the objectives of the City’s
Strategic Plan in matters of land-use
planning and policy development.
• A review of the Strategic Plan is
underway.
• The Strategic Plan represents a blueprint of the City’s overall
development and management.
• The Strategic Plan is the foundation for all future City master
plans, including the Official Plan.

BRAMPTON’S CURRENT OFFICIAL PLAN
• The 2006 Official Plan is based on
a comprehensive review of the
1993 Official Plan, begun in 2002.
• The 2006 Official Plan has been
adopted by Council and was
‘approved in part’ by the Ontario
Municipal Board in 2008.
• Full conformity with the Provincial
Growth Plan and Region of Peel
Official Plan will be achieved with
the final approval of Brampton’s
Growth Plan Conformity
Amendments (OPA 43 & 73).
WHY IS AN OFFICIAL PLAN REVIEW NEEDED ?
Provincial Legislation
• The Planning Act requires that an Official Plan be reviewed at least
every 5 years.
Assess and Track Progress
• The City of Brampton has grown and changed dramatically since the
last Official Plan Review. The Official Plan Review will update policies
to guide land use planning, growth management and development
approval to 2041, within the context of Provincial and Regional
policies and Plans.
BENEFITS OF AN UPDATED OFFICIAL PLAN
• Preparing an updated Plan will provide the opportunity to
address future changes in the physical planning of
Brampton, and how these may be integrated with other
City initiatives for managing sustainable economic,
environmental and social change.
BRAMPTON OFFICIAL PLAN REVIEW
• The five-year review is a major undertaking, the scope of
the review must be carefully defined in order to identify the
resources that will be required to establish a realistic
timeline for completion.
• December 2012 Recommendation Report “Introduction to
the City of Brampton Official Plan Review” recommended
that staff consult on what aspects of the Official Plan need
to be reviewed and report back to Council.
• Report can be found on the project webpage
