General Information
Brief History of the City of Arusha The history of the modern City of Arusha goes back to the late 1800’s when it was founded by German colonialists. Arusha (like the rest
of Tanganyika) was a territory within the control of German East Africa (Deutsch-Ostafrika). A garisson town, it was named after the
local tribe Wa-Arusha, known as Larusa by the Maasai.
In 1899 the Germans began construction of a strong fortification - a Boma, or German military fortress – which, armed with mounted
maxim machine guns, made a formidable stronghold. With its completion in 1901, colonial troops were garrisoned in Arusha under the
command of First Lieutenant Georg Küster, and Arusha remained under military rule until the general transfer to civilian administration
throughout German East Africa in 1906. Arusha quickly developed into a significant trading and administrative centre after 1903. The
adventurer John Boyes (during his visit in 1903) found Arusha to be a progressive town with about thirty Indian, Greek, and Arab shops
selling cloth, trinkets, soap, enameled plates and bowls, beads, and copper wire. One even had a sewing machine out front and
produced jackets and trousers for the German soldiers along what is today known as Boma Road.
Later in 1948 Arusha was declared a township and became a municipality in 1980. Thirty two years later after became a municipality it
was given city status on 31 October 2012.
Arusha has been crucial in the history of the modern Tanzania. Princess Margaret visited Arusha in 1956; official documents ceding
independence to Tanganyika were signed in Arusha in 1961 and seven years later the Arusha Declaration was signed here in 1967.
Population The total population of Arusha Region is 1,694,310 people; with about 739,640 living in the City of Arusha, Tanzania’s third most
populated city according to a 2012 Census.
Language There are many native languages spoken across the Arusha region such as Maa which is spoken by the Maasai and Larusa people;
however Swahili and English are the official languages of the country. Swahili is the national language and is mostly commonly
understood.

The A-104 runs northward, to the west of Mount Meru, from Arusha to Longido and Namanga at the Kenyan border before
continuing to Nairobi.
The A-104 also runs westward past Monduli to its junction at Makuyuni with the B-144 road that leads to Mto wa Mbu, Karatu, and
the Ngorongoro Area. After that, the A-104 curves southward to the east of Lake Manyara and continues on to Babati, Singida
and Dodoma before connects to the other roads networks in the central Tanzania.
In Arusha and whole of Tanzania the rule of the road is to drive on the left hand side of the road, and most cars are right hand vehicles.
All distances, speed limits and speedometers are stated in kilometers and not in miles. All passengers and drivers are required by law to
wear seat belts; it is also against the law to drive while using hand held phones. It is also obligatory that all vehicles carry two red
triangles to be placed 20m (66ft) in front and behind the vehicle in the event of a breakdown.
All drivers are subjected to a 30km per hour speed limit within the city, in the villages and when driving at the national parks and
conservation area the speed limit is 50 km/h. When driving on major roads the speed limits are 120kph (75mph) and 60kph (35mph) in
populated areas.

Getting Around
Travelling by Bus There are numerous private bus companies operating daily in Arusha travelling to almost all major cities across East Africa- including
Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mwanza, Kampala, Moshi and many other locations. Be careful when booking a bus ticket to choose
a company with a good reputation (recommended are the Kilimanjaro Express for city-to-city long distance routes and Riverside
Shuttle-for the cross-border routes). These recommended coaches maintain modern coaches, some with air-conditioning or on-board
toilets and run to fixed schedules.
Commuting Around the City Taxis (Cab): Taxis in Arusha are plentiful, safe and cheap; make sure to agree on a price before leaving for your destination
(expect to pay around Tzs 6,000 (US$ 3.75/-) for a trip within the city centre such as from Clock-Tower or Central Market to other nearby
places, or Tzs 20,000 (US$12.50/-) for the immediate outskirts, at any time of the day). During night hours the charges may be a slightly
higher. Expect a waiting charge to be applied after 20 – 30 minutes!
Car Hire: You can arrange to hire a car during your stay here in Arusha. A range of car hire companies operate within the city,
however most companies prefer to provide their own drivers for long distance driving outside the city. For all self-drive in Tanzania you
will need to have a valid International or Tanzanian driving license.
City Buses: To commute around the city centre and to the nearby suburbs of Arusha, you
can catch smaller minibuses, known locally as Dala-Dala; you can catch a Dala-Dala by simply
flagging them down from the side of the road. Often crowded and with the occasional
erratic driver, they are an easy and very affordable way to get around Arusha – with fares in
the city at 400 shillings (US$0.25/-). When boarding a Dala-dala please be aware that pick-
pocketing can happen to you (both visitors and locals) and so valuables should be stored
inside your backpack on kept securely on your lap. They are very cheap charging between
Tzs 400/- (US$0.25/-) for the main routes in town or Tzs 600/- (US$0.40/-) for routes going out
from city to the places such as Tengeru, USA-River, Nduruma, Ngaramtoni, Kikatiti, Maji-ya Chai,
and Kisongo

Getting Around
Boda-Boda Motorbike Taxi Taking a Boda-Boda (or motorcycle taxi) is a cheap, fast and effective way
to get around town, but can also be rather risky. For drivers and passengers
alike, taking boda-boda is sometimes a risk, but there are few alternatives
when heading to the villages. A top tip is to tell the driver to drive slowly and
carefully – this shows them that you’re not interested in them showing off
how fast they can drive!
Walking and Crossing the Roads The City of Arusha is very pleasant place to walk around with jacaranda
trees shaded most areas of it; almost throughout the year, the weather is
very pleasant. It is very pleasurable to walk around; a large number of
areas within the City Centre are having pedestrian pathways.
The City itself is very small with much of business and social activities clustered within ten kilometers radius of Clock Tower area. Many
sights of central area can be seen simply by walking around. Interestingly a quite sizeable population of Arushans enjoys walking whilst
carrying out their everyday life routines. In the Clock Tower (the heart of Arusha with historical significance to the City as well it is full of
commercial activities) for example, you can only need about four to do sightseeing without the need for taking any form of public
transport. In this area, if it is your first time here in City, you have great opportunity to walk around and see the German Boma Museum,
Maasai Craft and Art Market, the headquarters of East African Community, Arusha International Conference Centre, and the Clock
Tower itself which was built back in 1945 by Greek millionaire, Christos Galanos. Other attractions include the Themi River, the Arusha
School (then European School opened in 1934), the historic Arusha Hotel (which is believed to be one of the oldest hotels in East Africa)
built 1894, Arusha Lutheran Town Centre's Cathedral was built in early 1900 – (the second Lutheran Church to be built in Arusha, Christ
Church Arusha across the Themi River dated back in 1932, and plenty of other places.
Walking around give you a really close feel for the Arusha city and it is also a best way to mingle with the locals.

Getting Around
Walking and Crossing the Roads (Cont) Safety measures to take when walking around
Crossing of the Roads: It could be very challenging and somewhat risky to cross major roads or streets if you are not very
careful. The roads are sometimes crowded with motorcycles (Boda-Boda) and erratic motor-vehicles drivers.
Beforehand, absolutely make sure the road/street is clear before you would be crossing on the other side of the road.
Pick Pockets and Snatching Thieves: The tourists and locals alike are vulnerable with pick pockets, con artist and
bag/camera snatching thieves when walking in the streets of Arusha. Make sure you leave your valuables items at
home or in your hotel room. Do not create attention to lure thieves by wearing or carrying most expensive or most luxurious items. Other
precautions you should take are as follows:
Avoiding putting yourself into risky by walking at night; take a cab to stay safe!
Be like a local; don’t be fearfully but rather carefully – just act normal, Arusha is probably a very
safe place than your home city. Arushans are friendly and very hospitable people; anyone
can easily assist you with direction or even walking with you and asking for nothing in return.
Wear a money belt and don’t show off your bling-bling or your cash money to create
pointless attention.
Secure your personal belongings all the time whether staying in hotel or walking around;
create your own “Don’t Loose Discipline” by keeping and handling your belongings careful.
Most of the time tourists lose their items rather than them being stolen.
Don’t brawl with street thieves they can seriously harm you; nearly every one of them are
keeping knives; large screw-drivers and all other sorts of tools that they can use to hurt you. You
better “YELL VERY LOUD” to get assistant from other pedestrians once the thieves are several
meters away from you, locals are often ready to help and assist you in fighting or chasing them…

Jogging On the Streets of Arusha
Perhaps the best place for jogging in City of Arusha are all the areas around east side of Clock-Tower, the area that covers the entire south and north of Uzunguni vicinity, as well the area from northeastern part of the city starting from Kundayo Lodge towards Simeon Road and the entire areas south of the Impala Roundabout – which includes Themi Hill, Ring Road, and of course the Njiro Area down to ESAMI. The area far west side of the city – Burka area also offers a very pleasant jogging experience. If you plan to run in City of Arusha the best time to do it is early in the morning just after darkness between 6am and 8am on weekdays and again between 5:30 pm to 7:00pm. On weekends the traffic is very low and most of the places are completely shut down on Sundays and definitely this offer very enjoyable jogging experience. Arusha is very wonderful place for joggers due to its leafy streets, quiet roads, friendly people, and safe environs, but like any other major city across the world; Arusha has its fair share of criminal activity and questionable characters. Running any time during the day is very safe, avoid running when is still dark in the mornings. It is safe to jog after the sunrise and before the evening darkness. As we all know darkness makes crime more likely. It is recommended for you to always running in the pedestrian routes to avoid erratic drivers and speedy boda-boda riders. When jogging, you should stick to more visible areas or
populated areas where other people jog or walk.

Arusha, much like all other major urban areas across the developing world, has many people who are in need, including street
children and beggars. The general opinion for tourists opposes giving street children money as it encourages a culture of
begging. However, like anywhere, gifts can be given as a true expression of friendship, appreciation or thanks. Trading T-shirts,
hats, or offering magazines to locals is not uncommon.
There are many NGOs working in Arusha; most of whom are working in positive ways to support the local community. If you would
like to get involved with an organization whilst you are staying in Tanzania, please be advised to do your homework. It does not
support anyone to simply “hand out money” on the street, or to give donations or support to projects which are not sustainable.
Make sure that any organization you are supporting is both positive for the community and the environment; and sustainable
(e.g. it has constant people on the ground, a long-term plan for development and a way to keep the project maintained for the
duration.)

Food
Eating Out Tanzanian dining is eclectic and exciting. There are a wide range of places to eat in Arusha; from fine
continental dining in some of the larger hotels to a range of world foods (pizza, pasta, burgers etc.) in restaurants around town to
delicious local snacks in some of the markets. Everywhere serving drinks tends to serve food and you don’t need to go far to find some
delicious snacks, meals and exciting foods.
Some of the local dishes that are well worth a try are:
Chips Mayai - a chip omlette is the best way to describe this dish. It may sound calorific but it is utterly
delectable and will soon become a firm favorite on the menu. Expect to pay around Tzs 2000-3000 ($1.50)
for a serving.
Wali na Maharage – rice and beans – another firm favorite on the menu, and available for around Tzs 1000-
2000 ($0.75-$1.50)
Ugali – a staple of the Tanzanian diet, this maize-flour porridge is served with beans, vegetables or a
selection of meat and is a great way to fill up.
Nyama choma – barbequed meat! One of the best snacks or meals around, a good meal of nyama and
chips or ugali will cost around Tzs 3000 ($2)
Ndizi – these fried bananas are a must try when eating out in Tanzania. Eat them with a touch of salt and
some pili pili sauce. You can normally buy three for around Tzs 1000 ($0.75)
Mandazi – donuts! These delicious treats are best served hot from the pan (try breakfast time for the most
delicious selection) and can be found in most cafes and restaurants, as well as in markets and from road-
side vendors. Expect to pay around Tzs 500 ($0.50) for one or two
Chapatti – another firm favorite on the breakfast menu, hot chapattis with chai (tea) are a great way to
start the day. Like mandazi, expect to find these treats everywhere during the mornings, for a similar price
(Tzs 500 to1500) for one.
There are abundant fruits to purchase from snack-sellers, and in markets, as well as boiled eggs, nuts and
mahindi (hot maize, or corn-on-the cob) – delicious with some chili salt and lime, and a great snack for just
Tzs 500 ($0.50) from many road-side mamas.

Health and Safety
When on holiday, volunteering or visiting any major city around the world, visitors should take certain health
and safety precautions and Arusha is no any different. Tanzania generally is a very safe country, but do not
invite temptation. To make your visit as safe and enjoyable as possible, here are a few top tips:
Health Tips The quality of the food in Arusha is excellent; however, you should always avoid unclean food and water (the main causes of
travelers' diarrhea and other diseases). Reduce your risk by sticking to safe food and reliable water sources – either filtered, boiled
or bottled. Be aware that the best food is often that which is cooked fresh – make sure, if you eat in a big hotel, that food is being
cooked fresh. Road-side vendors tend to cook food in front of you, so you can guarantee its freshness.
You should consult your physician or medical specialist about individual medical requirements before your trip. Find out from your
doctor which vaccines and medicines you require when visiting Arusha. Several vaccinations are highly recommended when
traveling to Arusha and other parts of Tanzania including Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Diphtheria
Typhoid is spread through contaminated food or water in Tanzania; therefore, it is advisable to use bottled, filtered or boiled
water for drinking.
Hepatitis A is spread through contaminated food or water therefore, it is advisable to use bottled, filtered or boiled water for
drinking
The government of Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival if you are traveling from a country with risk of
yellow fever, although the country is getting strict on this policy, and many foreign visitors are required to have a certificate even
if Yellow Fever is not prevalent in their country. It has now become mandatory for everyone.
For protection against ticks and mosquitoes use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several
hours. Most hotels and guest houses provide mosquito nets for protection at night. It may be advisable to bring your own net if
you plan on staying in the villages or highlands.
Malaria: Make sure your doctor or travel clinic knows you are traveling to Tanzania so he can prescribe the right anti-malarial
medication. Whilst areas of high altitude (like most parts of Arusha) are relatively malaria-free, you will find yourself often passing
through areas where malaria is prevalent in order to get to your destination.
There are some excellent health-facilities available in Arusha to treat basic ailments. Advanced medical facilities are limited, but
for advanced medical treatment Nairobi is only four hours away from Arusha where you can find world-class medical facilities.
You are advised to have adequate coverage travel insurance. Your Travel Insurance should cover for loss of baggage or
valuables, personal, accident, emergency evacuation, and medical expenses.

Health and Safety
Security Tips
Arusha is generally is a safe place, but do not invite temptations, the best safety measures are the ones you perform as a matter
of common sense and habit. Do not walk around the streets with your valuables on show – keep large cameras, wallets and
expensive jewellery inside your bag or out of sight.
Don't take risks riding boda-bodas who may be driving too fast or dangerously. Don’t get unknown taxis on the street. Get a legit
taxi from a taxi rank or hub near a hotel or restaurant. Make a list of legitimate car and taxi services for yourself. Never get into a
taxi which has more than one person inside, regardless of their reasoning.
Seek the advice of your hosts or locals on where to go after dark. Don't walk alone at night, always take a taxi. When in doubt of
your destination or the safety of a neighborhood, always take a cab, especially late at night.
Most hotels have free safes – use them and keep valuables and money out of sight. When carrying valuables with you - money,
tickets, passports and bank cards - use a money belt hidden under your clothes. Carrying a photocopy of your passport to keep
separate from the original is highly recommended!
Arushan are very hospitable, cheerful, and friendly people and will be happy to help you if you are lost or in need of aid.
However, be skeptical of people approaching you with unlikely or tear-jerking stories, even if they can back it up with facts,
documentation, etc. These are expert scammers and they prepare their stories well!
Street Hawkers: This is more of a warning than a danger, but expects very persistent hawkers in Arusha trying to sell to you
paintings, souvenirs and other things. If you are not interested in buying, simply politely ignore them and continue on with your
business. The most persistent hawkers are located around the Clock Tower area of town, as well in other central parts of the city.
Always pay close attention to your surroundings before and whilst using an ATM. Do not allow strangers to assist in any way at
ATMs. Use machines during the day time; recommended are those that are guarded or those either insider our outside banks and
shopping centers.
