How to create the perfect cat eye for every occasion

Without a doubt, cat eyes are the hot-test trend in eye makeup. Flaring eye-liner out at the outer corner of your eyes accentuates the lash line for a classic, sexy look. Cat eyes or “winged” eyeliner is easier to master than you think. Once you learn the technique, you can use it to fashion a variety of looks from delicate and demure to get-noticed bold. Very little additional makeup is necessary making the style great for hot, sticky summer weather. I prefer to keep my lids bare or just add a simple swipe of shimmery shadow. In this post, I will offer tips to create the perfect cat eye and demonstrate 5 different wearable looks to serve as inspiration. I wear some version of a cat eye almost every day, so I consider myself a bit of an expert!

1. Line the upper lash line including the spaces between the actual lashes (this is called tight lining) from the inner corner of your eye to the outer edge.2. Draw a line up from the outer cor-ner of your eye using the curve of the

By Omnia El Shamy Makeup Artistbottom lash line as a guide. Note the length of this line, to repeat on the other side for symmetry.3. Connect the inner corner of the eye with the top of the line at the outer corner.4. Fill in the shape.Optional: If desired, you can line the bottom lash line as well. I personally prefer for this line to be softer, blend-ing from the outer corner to the cent-er of the eye.

Tips: To clean up mistakes, dip a cot-ton swab in eye makeup remover or a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil and wipe away excess. Dark, thick, sharp lines will create a dramatic look while soft, light, or smudged lines create a more subtle look. Don’t fear the cat eye be-cause you fear it’s too bold; it’s easy to modify. If you struggle with draw-ing straight lines, try this awesome trick using scotch tape. Liner brushes are essential for applying gel, cream, or shadow liners. They are available in pointed, flat, and angled varieties.

El Sawy Culturewheel El Sawy culturewheel (Arabic: ساقية (transliterated: Sakkiat Al-Sawy) ( الصاوىis an all-purpose, private cultural cent-er, located on Gezira Island in the Za-malek district, central Cairo, Egypt.

It is considered one of the most im-portant cultural venues in Egypt. According to Aljazeera, the cent-er gets more than 20000 visitors monthly and its website receives ap-proximately 150000 visitors/month.

El Sawy culturewheel was established

in 2003 by Engineer Mohamed El-Sawy. Prior to its construction, its location, beneath the 15th May Bridge in Zama-lek, was a garbage dump and a shelter for homeless people and drug addicts.

El-Sawy named his center in honor of his father’s — Abdel Moneim El-Sawy, an Egyptian novelist and a for-mer minister of culture — five-part novel series:“El-Sakkia” or(The Wheel).

The center is home for a wide range of activities and cultural events.

Every year, it chooses a main theme for most of its events. The center has organized hundreds of concerts and musical events, including those for oud, jazz, musical theatre, children chorus and performances for sev-eral Egyptian and Arab bands, singers

and entertainers. It also hosts sev-eral seminars, workshops, art exhibi-tions, book fairs and movie shows.

Being the first non-government con-trolled private cultural center in Egypt, its events are claimed to have more freedom and higher quality than those in government-controlled centers.

The Sawy also includes several sections for arts and music training and a num-ber of libraries, including a music library and children’s library. And it offers sev-eral art classes in painting, sculpture, piano and violin for children and youth.

Cairo Book Fair to Launch Professional Program

In early 2015, the Cairo International Book Fair will launch its first-ever pro-fessional program. The program’s set to be held from January 29 through 31, on the eve of the city’s 47th fair.

The Cairo book fair, which boasts two million annual visitors and more than 700 publishers, has seen hard times in the last several years. The fair was cancelled in 2011, and the fairs that followed have each had their organiza-tional challenges.

But Egyptian politics isn’t the only hur-dle facing a professional program in Cairo. A number of international pub-lishers are already attending Arabic-focused book fairs in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi.

But Sherif Bakr, a member of the Egyp-tian Publishers’ Association (EPA), says the Cairo program can work. Bakr is part of an EPA subgroup that has been pushing the new professional pro-gram.

In launching a professional program, Bakr says, Cairo is not aiming to com-pete with the well-funded fairs in Shar-jah or Abu Dhabi. Instead, “we actually hope to cooperate.” The Cairo fair,

which is traditionally held at the end of January and beginning of February, is nestled between the Sharjah (Novem-ber) and Abu Dhabi (April/May) fairs. In this way, Bakr suggested, “It would be another chance for foreign publishers to discover the area with a different taste.”

It’s also true that, while the saying is “Egypt writes, Beirut publishes…,” it is Cairo that has the largest number of publishers in the region. And the Cairo fair, Bakr said, “has a better variety” of publishers, “especially with inde-pendent publishers and newcomers who are really changing the publishing scene in Egypt and the Arab world.”Cairo’s new professional program was first introduced in Frankfurt this year, and Bakr said it’s already generated a lot of interest. Publishers told him, “Fi-nally, we’ve been trying to discover this part of the world but it seems impos-sible.” So, Bakr said, “we are preparing for ‘Mission Impossible’.”Most Arab publishers still focus on the selling as-pect of book fairs, so an international professional program will take some marketing. “But we know the difficul-ties,” Bakr said, “and we are going to do our best to make this an experience not to be forgotten.”

Manial Palace to reopen

At the southern tip of Roda Island stands Manial Palace, an exquisite example of early 20th century architecture.

Ancient pharaoh rises againThe Egyptian government has recently invested heavily into the renovation and restoration of its ancient cultural sites in an effort to turn around an ail-ing economy, traditionally reliant on tourism and struggling to recover in the wake of the Arab Spring. Art Daily reports that two completed projects have been unveiled.

Archaeologists in Luxor presented a restored giant statue depicting the Pharaoh Amenhotep III walking. The statue, which was re-erected at the northern gate of the ruler’s funerary temple, is standing for the first time since crumbling in an earthquake 3,200 years ago. Scientists pieced together the 110-ton statue from 89 chunks and several hundred of fragments. It now stands next to another effigy of the king, unveiled last spring.

“These are up to now the highest standing effigies of an Egyptian king in striding attitude,” Hourig Sourouzian, head of the restoration project, told Art Daily.

Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab un-veiled four newly renovated rooms in the Egyptian Museum’s Tutankhamen gallery in Cairo. The halls feature the boy-king’s mummy alongside various treasures that were excavated from the monarch’s tomb, left untouched until 1922.

James Moran of the EU’s delegation in Cairo told Art Daily that the restoration of the iconic institution “is fundamental for the economy.” The EU has pledged €92,000 ($115,000) towards the rede-velopment of the Egyptian Museum, which holds the largest number of Pharaonic artifacts in the world.

AL Masar Gallery | The Art Lounge is proud to present its First solo exhibi-tion for the pioneering Late Artist Ta-hia Halim. The exhibition showcases 40 scarce signed drawings from the 40’s to 80’s representing the artist’s private collection. The collection dis-played depicts the artist’s memories documented on paper during her vis-its to various countries including Paris, London, Stockholm, Belgrade, and Nubia in South Egypt. Being originally from an aristocratic family from upper Egypt, Halim focused on Nubians and

their daily lives in many of her draw-ings. In this exhibition, Halim used vari-ous medium in her drawings including Gouache, Pen, and Ink lending scarce attention to details.Tahia Halim (b. 1919, Aswan, Egypt) has been a professional artist since the 1930’s making painting her full-time career. Her works are simple & poetic. She is skillful in her mixture of colors and their distribution, creating touches of intensity and boldness in her art-works. Al Masar Gallery has exhibited the artworks of Halim in its previous exhibition titled “Nostalgia” in October 2008. Halim has exhibited both col-lectively and individually since 1942. Some of the most notable collectives were the 1952 and 1960 Venice Bien-nales, and biennales in Sao Paolo, Bra-zil, Alexandria and Egypt. If you take a look at your life to evaluate what you’ve accomplished, would you be proud of the life you’ve lived so far?

So many people claim that they are too busy at work that they can’t find time and energy to do what they want in life.

You wish to find a secret formula to balance life and work. You wish to live a bigger life and broaden your experiences, but you are totally stressed and out of balance.

When you turn to experts for a work/life balance advice, you usually get this answer:

“You must learn how to separate work from life”

For me this is B.S.The legendary Steve Jobs of Apple said, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

The Work/Life Balance Myth

So the advice of separating work from life is not practical and is pure non-sense.Here’s the secret...

You must live an integrated life

Everything you do should be an integral part of your passion, personality and lifestyle.

This way your work will give you positive energy that extends to other areas of your life. And when you live and work with passion, you live an integrated life that you don’t want to separate its parts.

Think integration, not separation! When you do work you love and have a great cause to live for, your life becomes integrated. Work becomes part of your life and your life becomes part of your work.

Everything you do has its role in the bigger meaning and purpose of your life. That’s the real balance.

Oh, sorry! I mean integration.

Omar Samra reaches South Pole

Omar Samra is proud to announce, that on 29 December, after crossing 111km, he skied to the last degree of the South Pole to raise Egypt’s flag. This accomplishment brings him one step closer to achieving his overall goal of completing the “Adventurers Grand Slam”.

Along with a team of eleven other adventurers who hail from Germany, Russia and India, Samra started his trek from the 89th degree. Every day the team would ski between seven to nine

hours, and cross roughly a distance of 14km to 16km, depending on weather conditions.September to March are considered Antarctica’s summer months, the sun is consistently above the horizon. It never gets that high in the sky at the South Pole though, reaching a maxi-mum height of 23 degrees. Much of the sunlight the Pole does get is im-mediately reflected upward because of the white snow. This phenomenon, along with the altitude (about 2800 metres) is what makes the South Pole one of the coldest places on Earth.“It was a rough start for me at the be-ginning,” Samra said. “I had a stomach microbe causing me severe pains; and I was on antibiotics for five days, which affected my performance early on; especially, that we had to pull sleds weighing 80kg throughout our jour-ney. However, as I improved, I started building more stamina and was able to make it. With this achievement close to the New Year, I hope that 2015 will be a good year for Egypt and for eve-ryone who is passionate to pursue his dreams.

17 countries represented at RiseUp Summit 2014

Representatives and delegations from 17 different countries where partici-pating at the RiseUp Summit, Egypt’s largest gathering for the entrepre-neurship ecosystem, which took place this year from October 12th – 14th at The GrEEK Campus in downtown Cai-ro. The countries represented where the UK, Austria, the Netherlands, Ger-many, Turkey, Denmark, Tunisia, Mo-rocco, Rwanda, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and India. The individuals and groups from these countries where participating as a variety of different

organizations including co-working spaces, investment funds, incubators and consultants.

Investor delegations included repre-sentatives from Playfair Capital in the UK, Hoxton Ventures in the UK, 3ts Capital in Turkey, and Venture Scout in Denmark. They were participating in a one-day pitching event, the Investor Lounge, organized by StartUp MENA, aiming to promote Egyptian start-ups to international investors. These start-ups had the opportunity to pitch live on stage in front of a panel of sea-soned investors, including ten of the biggest European VCs. “Sustainability is one of the primary challenges for entrepreneurs today,” said Ahmed El Afli, investor. “The path to success is a difficult o ne, and entrepreneurs need to learn to col-laborate, interact and network in order to build and sustain their businesses. What we were seeing here at the Ri-seUp Summit in Cairo is so refreshing and inspiring, and gives us a tremen-

dous feeling of hope and positivity for this region’s entrepreneurs and youth.” There were 15 different co-working spaces from Egypt and around the world attending the Co-Working Know-How Camp from October 10th – 16th, where participants were help-ing each other to succeed in making co-working a more sustainable busi-ness.

“We’re excited to be here in Egypt, at this incredible gathering for entrepre-neurs,” said Georg Demmer, founder of Austria’s Co-Space. “The future of entrepreneurship is going to be in-creasingly about collaboration and

interdependence among not just the entrepreneurs themselves, but the en-tire ecosystem of partners, investors, mentors and service providers. That’s why co-working spaces play a critical role in supporting and developing en-trepreneurship around the world.”

The summit’s opening took place on Sunday, 12th of October. The two-day agenda was held on October 13th and 14th and included over 40 workshops, 16 panel discussions, three round ta-bles, four keynote speeches, in addi-tion to pitch events, talks and the IN-JAZ Trade Fair.

Cars Worth Waiting For: 2015–2018

Hyundai ix35 Highlander

WHAT IT ISThe eagerly awaited bazooka version of the third-generation Cadillac CTS, designed to fight for America’s honor against its European competitors. Un-fortunately, this time around, there won’t be a station wagon or a coupe—or a manual option. That’s a crime, but the automatic sedan is what sells.

WHY IT MATTERSThe first two generations of this velvet Vette have given Cadillac credibility among enthusiasts. The next one will sand down the few rough edges of its predecessors. The CTS-V is a halo car for the brand and for GM as a whole.

PLATFORMBroadly speaking, the CTS-V will use the ATS/CTS “Alpha” architecture, but

Hyundai no longer needs to prove with the ix35 but with this new model, Hyundai not only claims that it is offer-ing quality for a low price, but it would also have us believe that the ix35 of-fers SUV looks and ability, compact MPV practicality and small hatchback levels of affordability. If you believe its maker, this is not simply a compact SUV but a crossover vehicle.

The ix35 is clearly designed to appeal to style-conscious buyers, whichever demographic they fall into. The first Hyundai model to showcase the com-pany’s ‘fluidic’ design language, the

Cadillac CTS-V 2016 Cadillacwith more aluminum onboard.

POWERTRAINPower will come from a supercharged V-8, most likely the 6.2-liter LT4 from the new Corvette Z06. It will make at least 600 horsepower and send the squawk to the rear tires through GM’s new eight-speed automatic.

COMPETITIONAudi S6/S7/RS7, BMW M5/M6 Gran Coupe, Jaguar XFR, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG.WHAT MIGHT GO WRONGThe lack of coupe and wagon variants may put off the hard core. And the 420-hp Vsport could make the CTS-V a harder sell

BMW X5 & X6 M 2015

WHAT IT ISUltra-powerful M versions of the new X5 and X6. They’ll be stronger than ever and exude even more menace in their restyling.

WHY IT MATTERSPurists winced when these utes’ 2.5-ton predecessors appeared almost as mockeries of the street-legal racers once turned out by BMW’s M shop. Purists are still wincing, but heresy can be both fun and profitable.

PLATFORMThe X5 M and X6 M share many part

numbers with their non-M variants but come only with four-wheel drive and a heavily tweaked chassis.

POWERTRAINThe sole engine offering is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8. Horsepower will hit about 600, and an eight-speed auto-matic is standard.

COMPETITIONJeep Grand Cherokee SRT, Land Rov-er Range Rover Sport Supercharged, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, another staffer for your Russian security team.

car’s angular grille is a particularly dis-tinctive feature, and to our eyes it suits the ix35 very well.

There is a pronounced sporty stance to the ix35. Its tapering side windows and roofline are designed to create a coupé look, and the sharply defined headlights and bonnet strakes are also intended to give the car a more ag-gressive character. It represents a bold leap forward from the often bland styl-ing practiced by Hyundai before, and makes it clear that the ix35 is a revo-lution next to the Tucson, its distinctly forgettable predecessor.

139bn Euro Investment ProjectsInvestor sentiment in Egyptian real estate has been boosted despite the current political situation, leading to €139bn-worth of development pro-jects being scheduled for 2015.

The Middle East business intelligence service MEED reported a remarkable pick-up in Egypt’s economic develop-ment over the next two to three years in infrastructure, banking, real estate, power, petrochemicals and manufac-turing sectors.

Foreign firms continue to maintain their presence in Egypt with an influx of investment continuously pouring into the country, increasing its attrac-tiveness to foreign and regional banks and high net worth individuals scour-ing the country for new opportunities for investment or expansion.

In response to increased investor in-terest, the Egyptian government has introduced new investment laws to ease doing business in the country and to continue to woo investors in the hopes of sustaining the country’s stability. Continued investment in real estate and housing markets reinforce the firm foundation of optimism for in-creasing the level of participation in the Egyptian economy.

“As Egypt turns the tide on the chal-lenges of the past few years, the coun-try is returning as a key investment hub for GCC and global investors alike - a development for which EFG Hermes is well-prepared - and as a firm with strong Egyptian roots and a broad, established regional presence, EFG Hermes is uniquely positioned to

facilitate intra-regional investment op-portunities,” said EFG Hermes co-chief executive, Karim Awad.

Commenting on the notable increase in business confidence, Ahmed Abde-laal, regional head of corporate bank-ing and structured finance for HSBC Middle East and North Africa said:

“Egypt’s strategic geographic loca-tion and open trade hub continue to be key drivers for the economy going forward. According to our latest Trade Confidence Index, businesses in Egypt are very confident about import and export trade over the next few months – ranking highest amongst all 23 coun-tries surveyed across the globe. This is a positive indicator of Egypt’s antici-pated economic growth and showcas-es the country’s strong fundamentals and potentials. HSBC remains optimis-tic about Egypt’s long-term potential and the country continues to feature as one of the bank’s key markets for focus and investment.”

Despite major political, economic and social transformations, Egypt has the basic foundations for economic stabil-ity and is rapidly emerging as an invest-ment market with enormous potential.
