    Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capitalcity of Maharashtra and a finance centre, economicpowerhouse, and industrial hub of India. Mumbai was

    leased to the East Indian Company by the King of England andlater it developed as an important port, used by the British formore than two centuries.

    e Greater Mumbai area occupies a long, narrow peninsula in theArabian Sea on the west coast of India. Mumbai City is an island

    of 69 square kilometres and also referred to as "Old Mumbai" or"South Mumbai.

    Economy and Investment ClimateFinancee city is one of the worlds top centers of commerce in terms offinancial flow and home to important financial institutions, suchas the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, theNational Stock Exchange of India, and corporate headquarters ofmany Indian companies and multinational corporations.

    Gems & JewelleryMumbai is the hub of Indias jewellery industry, receiving themajority of the countrys gold and rough diamond imports (twomajor jewellery segments in India).     Automobiles

    e automobile sector has played a key role in the industrializationof Mumbai. Every segment of the automobile sector (includingtwo and three wheelers, passenger cars and commercial vehicles)is represented in the city. Many big automobile companies havecorporate branches in Mumbai, including the largest vehiclemanufacturer in India, Tata Motors. Other major automobilecenters in the state include Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad and Nagpur.

    Atomic Research Center, the Tata Institute of FundamentalResearch, the National Chemical Laboratory, the National Centerfor Cell Science, the National Institute of Virology, the National

    InfrastructureRoadwaysMumbai is connected by National Highway 3, National Highway4, National Highway 17, National Highway 222 and NationalHighway 8. It is also linked with Pune by an extensive road network,including a six-lane Mumbai-Pune Expressway. e Bandra-WorliSea Link Bridge, together with Mahim Causeway, links this islandcity to the western suburbs.

    e main aviation hub in Mumbai is the Chhatrapati ShivajiInternational Airport, previously known as Sahar International

    Airport. To alleviate the traffic at the Chhatrapati Shivaji

    International Airport, an additional airport at Navi Mumbai hasbeen proposed.

    PortsMumbai Port Trust and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust are the twomajor ports that together provide the largest port facilities inIndia. ey handle a major proportion of the countrys incomingand outgoing cargo traffic. Mumbai Port, a natural harbor, hasextensive wet and dry dock accommodation facilities, and it is also

    an important base for the Indian Navy.

    TelecommunicationsState-owned MTNL is the largest telephone service provider inMumbai. Cell phone coverage is extensive, and both GSM andCDMA services are available in the city. Major service providersinclude Vodafone, MNTL, Airtel, Idea Cellular, Loop Mobile,Reliance Communication, and Tata Idicom.
