Scope  The  following  section  includes  instructions  on  how  to  identify  current  firmware  versions  and  to  determine  whether  or  not  the  updates  are  applicable.

Obtaining  Firmware  Versions  Please  follow  one  of  the  steps  below  to  check  existing  firmware  versions:

1. Use  the  Firmware  Update  CD  by  following  steps  in  the  Installation  section.  The  FWUCD  will  check  the  system  and  determine  if  the  updates  are  applicable.  OR,

2. Boot  Option:  • 7816/25/28-‐I5  and  7835/45-‐I3:

o During  boot  up  press  the  F1  key  when  the  user  sees  the  below  screen.

o At  the  next  screen  highlight  the  "System  Information"  option  and  press  enter.

o At  the  next  screen  highlight  the  "Product  Data"  option  and  press  enter

o The  versions  of  uEFI(Host  Firmware),  IMM,  and  DSA  (Diagnostics)  will  be  displayed.

o The  Array  Controller  versions  are  displayed  during  POST.  • 7816/25/28-‐I3,  7816/25/28-‐I4  and  7835/45-‐I2

o BIOS  version  is  displayed  during  POST.  More  detailed  information  is  available  by  continuing  these  steps

o During  boot  up  press  the  F1  key  when  the  user  sees  the  below  screen.

o At  the  next  screen  highlight  the  "System  Information"  option  and  press  enter.

o At  the  next  screen  highlight  the  "Product  Data"  option  and  press  enter

o The  versions  of  BIOS,  Diagnostics  (where  applicable),  and  RSA2  (ASM)  (where  applicable)  will  be  displayed.

o For  BMC  version  –  select  “Advanced  Setup”  from  the  initial  BIOS  Setup  screen

o Select  BaseBoard  Management  Controller  (BMC)  Settings  o The  BMC  firmware  version  will  then  be  displayed  at  the  top  of  the

resulting  screen.  o The  Array  Controller  versions  are  displayed  during  POST.

7835/45-‐I3  o Log  into  the  CLI  and  run  the  command:  “utils  create  report

hardware”  o A  SystemReport  file  gets  generated,  for  example:

admin:utils create report hardware *** WARNING *** This process can take several minutes as the disk array, remote console, system diagnostics and enviromental systems are probed for their current values. Continue (y/n)?y IBM detected - collecting system information...Done The hardware report files are: 4194PBQ_KQWAKYR_20100930-161716.xml.gz 4194PBQ_KQWAKYR_20100930-161716.txt HardwareReportConsoleOutput_20100930041712.txt

o To  retrieve  the  hardware  report  files,  use  CLI  command:  “file  get  activelog  platform/log/<filename>”,    where:  <filename>  is  the  name  of  the  file  as  listed  above.

o To  retrieve  diagnostics  use  CLI  command  (using  the  above  for  an  example):  file get activelog platform/log/SystemReport-4194PBQ_KQWAKYR_20100930-161716.txt

o To  push  the  file  to  an  SFTP  server,  run  the  CLI  command  indicated  in  the  report.  In  the  example  above,  the  command  is:  file get activelog platform/log/SystemReport-4194PBQ_KQWAKYR_20100930-161716.txt

o Open  the  SystemReport  file  and  check  the  component  and  firmware  strings  for  your  server.  Scroll  down  to  your  servers  section  in  Firmware  Reference  Tables  in  section  5  below.  If  the  component  has  a  match  the  AND  the  firmware  version  is  below  the  associated  version  listed  in  the  table,  the  server  is  impacted  by  the  advisory.

n) Click  on  OK  for  confirmation

 o) Server  will  eject  FWUCD  and  reboot  p) To  check  if  all  the  firmware  are  up-‐to-‐date,  user  should  reboot  the  server

using  same  FWUCD  again.  If  all  firmware  updates  are  successfully  applied,  then  there  will  not  be  any  updates.

Other  Instructions  /  Notes  /  Troubleshooting  • These  firmware  updates  must  be  reapplied  after  any  hardware  RMA,

replacement,  or  exchange  of  the  affected  components.  This  firmware  update  is  tested  by  Cisco  and  may  supersede  minimum  versions  bundled  with  other  software  stacks.

• During  the  exit  of  the  FWUCD  the  user  can  see  pages  of  multiple,  illegible  control  characters.  This  is  normal.

• On  some  3650-‐M2  based  systems  (7835-‐I3,  7845-‐I3,  the  IMM  must  be  flashed  before  the  uEFI.  Should  the  uEFI  update  show  failed,  while  the  IMM  update  succeed,  re-‐run  the  FWUCD,  and  the  uEFI  will  now  succeed.

Important  Firmware  Notes  1. When  upgrading  FROM  uEFI  version  1.07:  Due  to  issue  detailed  in  IBM

Retain  Tip  H197332  (detailing  where  the  system  boots  to  the  backup  uEFI  image)  it  will  be  necessary  to  follow  one  of  the  workarounds  documented  in  the  retain  tip  and  paraphrased  below.  See  the  Retain  tip  for  a  full  overview  of  the  issue.  The  following  workarounds  will  only  be  required  once  after  upgrading  from  uEFI  version  1.07:

a. Pressing  F3  during  the  Power  On  Self  Test  will  switch  the  system  back  to  the  primary  bank,  OR

b. Doing  a  cold  boot  (removal  and  then  restoration  of  external  power  to  the  server  chassis)

2. The  RSA2  Firmware  updates  are  Optional  updates  provided  for  compatibility  with  newer  client  side  JRE  versions,  and  are  not  automatically  applied  like  the  other  more  critical  firmware  updates.  As  such  they  will  need  to  be  manually  selected  on  affected  systems  in  order  to  be  applied.  Please  refer  to  following  for  details  on  JRE  and  browser/OS  requirements:  ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/system_x_pdf/43w7827.pdf
