This syllabus reflects the change to 2 compositions (written in class) for Spanish 1004. If you have extra days,

you could break the workshops into 2 different days (instead of one as you will see in this syllabus).

Additionally, there was a pilot to go back to 2 days exams as seen here (which will not continue). I have not

received updated syllabus reflecting the “one day” exam, please make this “only one day exam” adjustment

in the syllabus you are giving to your students this semester.

SEMANA 1: 19 – 25 enero

First week attendance policy Per University of Minnesota policy, any student who is absent the first day of class can be denied admission to the class. Per

Department policy, all students, both registered and non-registered, risk losing their place in the class and/or moving to the

bottom of the waiting list after any absence during the first five days of class. Therefore, if you are absent during the first five

days of class, you must contact your instructor as soon as possible to explain your absence and to avoid losing your place in the

class or on the waiting list. The full U of M policy can be viewed at:

Note that during the first week of class you must provide proof of your eligibility to enroll in the course. Your

instructor will let you know whether you need to provide a hard copy (paper) or submit it electronically.

If you completed SPAN 1003 or its equivalent, you must provide a copy of your transcript, with other

course grades blacked out. You must pass SPAN 1003 with a C- or better to enrol in SPAN 1004.

If you tested into SPAN 1004 on the Entrance Proficiency Exam (EPT), you must provide a copy of

those scores.

NOTE: If you feel that your Spanish level is higher than that of 1004, AND you received a High Pass

(HP) on each section of the EPT, please take the LPE immediately to see if you can place into SPAN

3015 (or test out of the CLA Language Requirement). Please go to langtest.umn.edu to learn more and

to sign up. THIS MUST BE DONE BY THE SECOND DAY OF CLASS. Remember that you must

continue coming to class in order to maintain your 1004 spot.
