Surge protectionSurge protection of low-voltage AC power systems
Transient overvoltageTransient overvoltages are surges that can reach tens of kilovolts with duration of the order of microseconds. Despite their short duration, the high energy content can cause serious problems to equipment connected to the line, from premature aging to destruction, causing disruptions to service and financial loss.
The origin of surges can vary from external sources such as lightning and utility grid switching, to internal sources such as the disconnection of motors or other inductive loads. Outdoor and longer lines are the most exposed to these fields, which often receive high levels of induction.
Transient overvoltages do not occur solely in power distribution lines, but are also common in any line formed by metal conductors, such as telephony, communications, measurement and data.
In all these networks, transient overvoltage protection is achieved by installing the protector or line discharger on the vulnerable line, connecting it in parallel between the line and earth. This means that in the event of a transient over-voltage, the protector will discharge excess energy to earth, thus limiting the peak voltage to a value acceptable for the electrical equipment connected.
General operation of a protectorA transient overvoltage protection device acts as a voltage controlled switch and is installed between the active conductors and ground in parallel with the equipment to be protected. When the supply voltage is lower than its activation voltage, the protector acts as a high-impedance element so that no current flows through it. When the supply voltage is higher than the activation voltage, the protector acts as an element with an impedance close to zero, diverting the overvoltage to earth and preventing it from affecting equipment downstream.
Selecting a protectorThe Quick Guide to Surge Protection aims to give an easy to select guide to selection of SPD. The information detailed below provides additional insight into selecting a SPD.
The network typology and the nominal voltage of the electrical supply must be considered when selecting a SPD. Since the SPD acts a voltage controlled switch, the nominal voltage of the network must not exceed the maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV) of the SPD. If the SPD is connected to a network where the nominal voltage is greater than the MCOV rating of the SPD, the SPD will reach end of life prematurely.
Another point to consider when selecting a SPD, is the voltage protection level, which must be less than the maximum voltage which can be withstood by the equipment to be protected.
Generally, the optimal system of protection is the cascade type, in which successive stages are combined in the performance of high discharge capacity devices and devices with a low voltage protection level.
Depending upon the exposure of the installation to the effects of lightning and transient overvoltages, protection devices with different discharge capacities will be needed. The various local and international standards classify devices into types or categories based on their discharge capacity and voltage protection level.

Cascading approach
Protection of low-voltage AC circuits from the effects of transient over-voltages is best achieved in a step by step approach as no single device can totally protect an installation from a very high surge.
The first line of defence should be a service entrance surge diverter connected between each phase of the incoming power line and service entrance ground. These units are designed to withstand high currents and energies in high power surges and will divert much of it to ground. While they can handle the peak they are not necessarily a fine tuned device. The Cirprotec CPS Block Plus (TVSS) surge protection panels or the DIN Rail PSC and CSH range are appropriately located as the first line of defence.
A second line of defence should be a surge suppressor mounted on any distribution panel serving sensitive equipment, such as computers. These can provide excellent attenuation of any residual transient energy that gets past the service entrance surge diverter. The Cirprotec DIN Rail PSM and CPS NANO Plus range is appropriately located at these locations.
Finally, a hard wired filter surge suppressor can be used at the point of connection of sensitive equipment, to completely remove any remaining small transient. This final suppressor also has the benefit of protecting the equipment against transients generated within the facility which can be surprisingly frequent and destructive in aggregate. The fine protection range of Cirprotec surge diverters are suitable for this application.
SPD Back-Up MCB / Fuse
Surge protection devices are connected downstream of a circuit breaker or fuse (F1), in parallel to the rest of the installation. If F1 exceeds the maximum size shown in the table below, it is necessary to install a dedicated circuit breaker or fuse F2. In any case, it is recommended to install a dedicated circuit breaker or fuse for the surge diverter. The main benefit is that maintenance or replacement of the surge unit can be performed easily without the disruption caused through shutdown at the main isolator.
The table below provides minimum size back-up fuses along with maximum size back-up fuses. Ideally the maximum size fuse/breaker would be selected as this ensures the SPD will activate up to its peak capacity to divert the surge. However, selecting the maximum size back-up fuse or MCB may not always be practical. Therefore a minimum back-up overcurrent protection is also listed. It must be noted that by installing a fuse or circuit breaker less than the maximum value, the SPDs may become isolated during a transient event, leaving the installation exposed despite still being able to operate. Therefore, the following recommendations are listed in the table below:

Note: The breaking capacity of the MCB must be higher than the short circuit current of the installation at that point.
If F2 is installed, it must be co-ordinated with the main circuit breaker. This will assure that when the SPD reaches its end of life, F2 will open keeping the entire installation from disconnecting. This is required for installations in which service interruption is critical.

Photovoltaic (PV) divertersPhotovoltaic installations are highly exposed to atmospherical phenomena as well as to the resultingpower surges and induced over-voltages. 80 % of the damages affecting inverter units happen as a resultof overvoltages. Almost 100 % of service interruptions in these plants are associated to atmosphericalphenomena (lightning strikes or discharges). It is therefore very important that both the DC and ACelectrical lines in photovoltaic systems be protected with the appropriate surge protection devices.
