The unprecedented but blessed downpour in the morning of Independence Day could not dampen the spirit

of patriotic zeal of students, teachers, and staff as well as parents of SCIS. The day began with hoisting of

National Flag by Principal, Mr. John Bagul, in the playground. Next the focus shifted to the school auditori-

um. The function began on a solemn note with enriching speech by Principal on value education, character

building of students, their duties and responsibilities including significance of vision and mission to build our

nation followed by the Inter House Debate competition and the chosen topic was “Acche Din aa gaye”.

Participants were students of Class X and XI, each representing his own House. Battle of words followed,

arguments were pertinent and emphatic. Judges Col. Mazumdar, Vice Principal ,Ms. Sanjukta Banerjee

and Primary Head, Ms. Sahana Bhattacharya, had a difficult time to adjudge the best. Achiever House won

the laurels and Innovator House stood second. Exalted speeches on British subjugation and freedom of In-

dia were delivered. The last event was indeed evocative – Patriotic and Regimental March songs and dances

with their themes, duly expressed were wonderfully presented by our students. Honouring our national an-

them and rising to its tune, the Auditorium was filled with deep reverence for our great Mother Land.

Photography is all about study of light, composi-tion and a good understanding of your own equipment. During the year, the photography club will organize activities whereby the students will get a chance to learn photography, utilize their camera to the fullest and become sensitized to the world around us. Six students of class VI to VIII went for a mon-soon photography session from school on 25th of July 2015, along with their mentor- Mr. Hayshan Rahman. They covered PrincepGhat, walked along the banks of river Hooghly, went to Ba-buGhatand then to Howrah Bridge. It was a rainy day so it was bit difficult for the students to do the photo shoot, but they enjoyed the photog-raphy trip and eagerly took pictures of rain soaked Kolkata. We look forward to more such trips .

I love my school because our teacher gives us many activities to do and lots of books to read. In our activity class we make rakhi, body parts, First-Aid Box, and charts. She writes our birthday cards and our Principal gives it to us. We bring plants to school and water it too! We make charts for class assembly and also for Creator House Assembly. — Prithwijeet Bhowal Class II D

On Saturday (8.8.15) Bharat Scouts Guides had conducted PRAVESH TEST for Bulbuls at Garden High School. Nine Bulbuls took part from our school. They all qualified with flying colours.

South City International School had given me an opportunity to enhance my skills

through-The Bharat Scouts and Guides, a voluntary, non political educational move-

ment for the young people. It was a week’s training at Gangapur Base Camp from

16th April 2015 to 22nd April 2015 and Certificates were awarded to Cub Masters. It

was indeed an enriching experience.

Fun and adventure mark the program that builds character and instills values. The

Cub movement embraces the values of the Cub Law, Motto and Promise, encouraging

cubs to be trustworthy, loyal, obedient, helpful, courteous, kind, cheerful, thrifty,

brave, clean and reverent. These programmes provide aim to make cubs competent

leaders, teach them the art of effective communication along with optimum use of

technology and efficient management.

On 20th July 2015- 90 students enrolled their names for the cub movement. Classes I to

IV participated in the activity conducted by Cub Company. We hope to hear more

“roars” in the following year.

Shakespeare once said men ’have their exits and their entrances’. How

very true the words are! SCIS bade goodbye to two very dear members

of the school, Mr. Dilip Singh and Ms. Madhumita Guha to pursue

their future endeavor. With a solemn speech Principal started the pro-

gramme thanking them profusely for their contribution to school. Col-

leagues and friends delivered overwhelming speeches leaving all tear-

ful. Soulful songs were sung by Ms.Kashmiri Pathak . Everybody was

greeted with Tea and snacks. We all wish them prosperity and success

in their future assignments and life ahead.

With deep sorrow we an-nounce the sad demise of Mrs. Lakshmi Roy, mother –in – law of Mrs. Moushme Dey (Roy), on the 26th Of July, 2015. May God bless her soul.

Rest In Peace!!

INTERACTIVE SESSION Class II children shared with each other the kind of books they enjoyed to read. They were thrilled when they were given a free rein to select their own books off the shelf in Junior Library.

Once in a while you come across a gem like “ The Book Thief” which stays with you for a long time, a

book that you would revisit frequently. Its a book to treasure, it’s a keeper.

From the very first page the reader knows that he is in for something very special. Set in Germany in

the years 1939-1943 , The Book Thief is about Liesel Meminger who lives with her foster family. Torn

from everything she’s ever known, her foster father shows her the magic and power of words as the

two of them share late night reading sessions of “The Gravediggers Handbook”. Her love of books

helps Liesel to bond with the Mayor’s wife and Max, who is a Jew being sheltered by the family in the

basement. The story is narrated by Death yet the story never becomes morbid as there is a lively

sense of humour running through the story. Death is depicted so vividly that he emerges as a strong

central character who keeps wondering about human nature. The illustrations in the book stays with

you forever haunting you with their beauty and providing a vivid visual landscape.

I strongly recommend the book to young readers…read it for its sheer beauty of language, read it

because it moves you to laughter and tears and most importantly read it because it speaks of hope

which is unassailable.
