From your High Priest & Prophet…
Nobles,
Hope everyone had a great summer. We still need help
with increasing membership across all Masonic bodies.
If anyone has ideas on how to improve membership,
please let us know. We have to change with the times,
but we don’t have to change our standards. I would like
to wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
Fraternally,
Al

Hello Ladies!!
Just a quick reminder that we still need donations for our prize baskets for Bunco (October 17), and for the baking basket that we will raffle on November 16. You can bring basket donations for both to the next Steak Night (October 10), or baking basket donations to Stated Meeting (October 20).
Bunco tickets are $10 and the baking basket raffle tickets will be $1 each or 6 for $5. I’ll have tickets to both available at Steak Night and Stated Meeting Night.
Thank you for all your help!

Thank you all for volunteering your time to
HOSPITAL REPORT When things are going so well, it is hard to write a report on that! The trips are going well. The Shreveport Hospital is doing well. Our two new full time orthopedic pediatric surgeons will be on board by the time I write my next article. That will give us a total of 4 full time surgeons on our staff. We have many more specialized surgeons on our part time staff. Dr. Gates, our newly retired Chief of Staff is returning to us to mentor the new staff. He is doing that at no cost to the Shriners. There is something wonderful about helping children that is contagious, and apparently permanent. Joppa is lagging behind our new applications we had at this time last year. It is unfortunate that less than 4% of our new applicants are a result of referrals from Shriners nationwide. We own and operate billions of dollars worth of hospitals, treating a million patients over the years, but we let other sources provide us with patients! This time last year Joppa had furnished Shreveport Hospital with 24 new patients. This year to date, only 16. Our Endowment Fund, system wide, is growing, thanks to a more aggressive effort of our Donor Relations force. While we get much needed relief from insurance paybacks, we still rely heavily on donations. It is all about “Love to the Rescue”. Respectfully submitted, Baxter Wade Hospital Chairman

From The Chaplain
One of my favorite quotations is the one that says, “Have you seen a large group of people pass this way? I
must find them…I am their Leader!.....Winston Churchill”. This quotation often reminds me that we have
things that need to be done, but it is often difficult to find someone to take hold of the reins and lead us in
the way that we need to go!
We are in a position in our nation and also in the Shrine where we need “Leadership”. We have those who
are “able” but not many who are willing.
Shortly we will celebrate a day that was enacted to celebrate and remember the men and women who lead
our nation in times of War. The name of the day was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in the USA
and Remembrance Day in most of the rest of the World. Outside of the USA it is celebrated much like our
Memorial Day (to recognize the War Dead). Here it is a time to recognize all who have served our Country
and who led in the Defense of our Nation.
As that day approaches, we may do well to remember that on the First Armistice Day, in 1918, there were
some places where the war did not end – specifically The Russian Empire (Russia and The Ukraine/Crimea)
and the Old Ottoman Empire (Turkey , Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Arabia) . We should also note that in the
area where the war did not end at the first Armistice Day, we are deeply involved in war and conflict today.
People are suffering and being tragically killed every day. We also need to note that this is a particular place
where we need strong effective leadership in light of the problems that face that same area and the world at
large.
As we approach the “ 11 – 11 – 11” of 2014 we should all pause to remember and recognize the men and
women of our Armed Services who are now leading and serving in that same troubled area, and all who have
honorably served in defense of our Nation and Pray for Leadership and Peace!

Clown Unit
Well, it’s been a long hot summer and we are all looking for some cooler temperatures. We have not had many clown gigs these past few months. On July 23rd Rojo and Scout went to Jones Park
for a party for the end of Kids Summer Camp. We blew up enough balloons to wear a blister on one clown’s finger. But a lot of kids were happy.
With Halloween getting closer, we’ve al-ready had a request from the City of Gulf-port’s Halloween and a request from Gau-
tier’s Mullet Festival. Also our trip to Sumrall’s town Halloween should be confirmed soon.
So looks like us clowns need to get our outfits and makeup ready to have some fun!
COME JOIN THE CLOWNS!!!
