In these song-poems, human life is portrayed as something that comes to earth from above. Program Notes Circle of Life is based on five Native American song-poems, originally part of oral tradition, but transcribed and translated by ethnographers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I love Native American poetry for the central place given to both grand and down-to-earth images of the natural world. White clouds in one breath, grasshoppers in the next; the ocean juxtaposed with acorns; the Milky Way humming above the salmon-berry bushes, and slushy ice all around…. How better to frame the experience of human life, itself by turn both sublime at times and small at others. In some Native American cultures, a person’s spirit is believed to rise after death – and by the same token, a baby is regarded as having ‘fallen’ to earth. So the sequence starts with Falling, a lullaby addressed to a baby, and ends with Rising, an image of spirits of the dead, gently swaying on their final journey above. Between these two lie Waking, a celebration of the joy of being alive; Singing, which describes the experience of love and immanence that comes from attending deeply to the natural world; and Leaving, in which images of autumn remind us poignantly that we must all one day depart from this earth. Musically, you will hear some parallels and reflections between different sections of the piece. Falling, as you might expect, features a descending phrase, which is turned around in the final movement to portray rising spirits. Waking is exuberant, while Leaving is sad and a little agitated – these two sections use much of the same musical material, but have different mood and tonality. The middle movement Singing portrays the sounds of thunder and grasshoppers with male voices and female voices respectively, singing first separately and then together. 2. Waking
I am happy. This is good!
There is nothing but ice all around. That is good. I am happy!
For land we have slush. That is good. I am happy!
When I do not know enough It is good.
When I tire of being awake I begin to wake. It gives me joy.
3. Singing
The voice that makes the land lovely, Again and again it sounds Among the dark clouds,
The thunder’s voice, The voice above,
The voice that makes the land lovely.
The voice that makes the land lovely, Again and again it sounds Among the little plants,
The voice of the grasshopper, The voice below,
The voice that makes the land lovely.
4. Leaving
It is time for the eagle to depart. It is time for the white clouds to be swept away.
In the west, the ocean is heaving.
In the sky, the colors are changing.
Altair is rising, Antares is rising, Venus is rising,
And the Milky Way hums.
It is time for the acorns to fall, It is time for the eagle to be flying.
5. Rising
The spirits of people will rise above, Swaying like women while men dance.
