How do we measure success? Dollars raised, number of attendees, fame of keynote speaker, years of commitment by its members? Whichever method you define as to the success of Circle 1000, it has been an incredible 15 years.

This year’s Founders’ Brunch was held at the ever-popular Four Seasons Hotel. More than 500 guests enjoyed the brunch, highlighted by Geraldine Ferraro’s inspirational story of her battle with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow.

The former Congresswoman and Vice Presidential candidate greeted as many attendees as possible before and after the bunch, winning over each person she met with a warm smile, gentle handshake and plenty of compassion to share.

More than $466,000 was raised this year, which will enable Circle 1000 to support the following areas of Hoag Cancer Center: ◆ $250,000 to the Cell Biology Lab ◆ $125,000 towards cancer-related services for the new Women’s Pavilion, scheduled to open in 2005 ◆ More than $25,000 towards Research and Endowment

The Circle 1000 Founders’ Committee was actually formed 16 years ago to help plan and create a donor group that would support the soon-to-be completed Hoag Cancer Center. Since then the committee has grown from 15 to 33 members. Of the original committee, 10 still serve today helping to solicit underwriting and plan the Annual Brunch. New members include Sherry Abbott, Jan Turner Hering, Gail Kirwan and Pame Schmider.

As Circle 1000 continues to expand and change, its initial goals remain – to raise the much needed funds for Hoag’s Cancer Center and educate local residents regarding the importance of early detection for all types of cancer, along with current available treatments.

The Founders’ Committee thanks each and every donor for their commitment and generosity to Circle 1000. We wish everyone good health, and hope to see you all at next year’s brunch in the spring of 2003.

Long-time friends, Arden Flamson, Sandy Sewell and Ginny Ueberroth have all been active volunteers for Hoag Hospital for more than 15 years. Each served on Hoag’s Foundation Board of Directors and is now currently involved in their third year as Co-Chairs of the $50 million campaign for the Women’s Pavilion.

The Pavilion will add a seven-story tower to Hoag’s campus that will house front-running health services for women as well as surgical and nursing floors for men and women, and a new main entrance and admitting area for the hospital.

Helping to expand Hoag’s services in our ever-growing community is a need and responsibility we all share.
