CIFP Politécnico Lugo
LOCATION: LUGO
Located on a hill on the banks of the river Miño, the city of Lugo preserves major remains
of its Roman past, among them its ancient wall, declared a World Heritage Site by
UNESCO. Inside the walls, the city conserves quiet pedestrian streets, wide squares and
spacious gardens, where buildings such as the Cathedral, the Archiepiscopal Palace, and the
City Hall stand out. But the historic quarter also houses some of the best restaurants in
Galicia, where it is possible to sample the excellent fresh meats and fish which have earned
Lugo's gastronomy recognized acclaim.
The greatest example of the city's Roman legacy is its wall. It was built between the 3rd and
4th centuries AD in what was known at the time as Lucus Augusti. This stone construction
has managed to survive the passage of the centuries and continues to be the city's most
distinctive architectural feature, marking the boundary between the historic quarter and the
newer area of urban expansion.

CIFP Porta da Auga LOCATION: RIBADEO The Ribadeo estuary forms a natural link between Galician territory and the neighbouring
lands of Asturias on the opposite bank. On this deep estuary, formed by the river Eo, the
main town is Ribadeo.
The Marquis of Sargadelos was the modern promoter of this city whose most outstanding
building is the modernist Galician country house of the Moreno brothers. From the port of
Porcillán, which is of Roman origin, it is a pleasant walk to the lighthouse of Pancha island,
situated on the mouth of the estuary, passing the ruins of the castle of San Damián.
.
It is also a good idea to spare some time for As Catedrais, one of the most beautiful
stretches of sand on the Galician coastline. Its rocks, which form natural arches resembling
a cathedral, create a magical landscape which changes with the tides, the high point of a
walk facing the open sea.

CIFP Portovello LOCATION: OURENSE
The river Miño, which crosses the city halfway through its course, has determined the
current appearance of the provincial capital. Almost two thousand years ago, the Romans
settled in this land attracted, among other reasons, by its thermal springs. The best-
preserved legacy of that age is “a ponte vella” (the old bridge), which connects the banks of
the Miño and which has grown to be the symbol of the city. Preserved from the original
Roman bridge are some ashlar stones at the base. This major piece of civil engineering was
restored in the 13th and 17th centuries, giving it its current appearance, with a pointed arch
and ramps. The capital's rich heritage can be discovered all along the streets which make up
the Old City
..Industries include chemical manufacture, milk production, water bottling near Verín, and
clothing manufacture near the capital city of Ourense. Although not a major tourist center,
tourism contributes somewhat to the economy: the spectacular scenery of the river valleys
attracts holidaymakers, there are several preserved medieval towns (Allariz and Ribadavia).

CIFP A Farixa LOCATION: OURENSE
Ourense, rumors have it, was name by the Romans “A cidade de ouro” (Auriense)(Gold
City) because of gold found in the river called “Rio Miño.”. The name of this city also has
its Latin roots. For example aquae urente, (burning waters) or it’s Germanic translation:
warm (hot Lake).
Orense was well known for the presence of hot springs called the Burgas. These can still be
seen today and they reach temperatures between 60 and 100º Celsius. Apart from these
thermal water fountains, there are also other locations within the city that departs thermal
water.
Imagine taking a dip in a large open-air thermal bath, by day or night, any time of year,
in water with a temperature of over 40 degrees centigrade, and right beside the Miño
river. All this can be experienced in Ourense, a city with a hidden underground ocean
with five spa areas to enjoy for free, and where you can even see the mineral and
medicinal waters bubbling out of the rock.

LOCATION: PONTEVEDRA
Pontevedra is situated in the rias baixas (or lower bays) of Galicia and it is the region’s most
southern sea facing province. The name Pontevedra refers to both the province and its self
titled capital city. Interestingly, Pontevedra’s largest conurbation is in fact the port city of
Vigo in a lower bay to the south of Pontevedra city.
The city is historically famous, culturally rich and has a significant number architectural
attractions worth seeing. It has a very well preserved medieval town centre along with
many small and popular squares, most of which have cafe's and bars around them.
Pontevedra is extremely well catered for by "English" language guides and booklets. In fact
we were able to get hold of no less than nine different English guide books (leaflets) about
the province and its monuments from two of the city’s central tourist offices. English
language speakers were also on duty.

CIFP A Xunqueira LOCATION: PONTEVEDRA
Pontevedra, a city with a long maritime and trading tradition, boasts one of the largest and
most elegant historic quarters in the whole of Galicia. Situated on the edge of the estuary of
the same name, the old town extends in a network of streets and squares and contains
major civic and religious buildings.
Called Ad Duos Pontes by the Romans, Pontevedra has over the centuries adopted a
character profoundly marked by the sea, as demonstrated by the shipyards, fishing port and
the city's intense commercial actvitity.
The village of Combarro is located in the Rías Baixas estuaries, six kilometres from the city
of Pontevedra. The old quarter in Combarro, which has been declared Property of Cultural
Interest, is a representative example of three traditional architectural elements in Galicia:
"hórreos" (raised granaries), "casas marineras" (sea houses) and crosses.

CIFP Manuel Antonio LOCATION: VIGO
In the Galician province of Pontevedra, situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, lies
the city that lends its name to the southernmost estuary of the Rías Baixas: Vigo. Its fishing
origin has left an historic quarter with a strong maritime flavour, which contrasts with the
modern facilities of its marinas. This city is an excellent base from which to visit the towns
and villages along the Vigo estuary and the Cíes Isles that form part of the National Park of
the Atlantic Islands.
The port of Vigo, one of the finest natural ports in the world, was the origin of this city
fringed by mountains. Its maritime qualities, already exploited in Roman times, have given
rise to the present-day marinas and the transatlantic harbour, as well as to the fishing and
canning industries. All of this has contributed to the urban development of Vigo, which
includes the traditional port area and boasts major historic buildings and wide tree-lined
avenues.

CIFP Valentín Paz Andrade LOCATION: VIGO
The city of Vigo is easily accessible thanks to the motorway and airport, and there are also
excellent nautical facilities. At its maritime station it is possible to purchase passages to the
coastal towns of Cangas and Moaña on the other side of the estuary, and even to the Cíes
Isles. Part of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands, the sheer cliffs and dunes of
these isles are the home of thousands of migratory birds.
The park has four groups of islands that are distributed between the estuaries of Vigo,
Pontevedra and Arousa. Once a pirates' haunt, Cíes is now an uninhabited and pristine
national park, open to the public only in summer.
Rodas Beach in Cies Island was chosen by the UK newspaper The Guardian as top 1 beach
in the world.

Situated beside the Atlantic Ocean, A Coruña is a historic city whose history has
maintained close links with its old fishing and commercial port. The peninsula on which
the Old City stands also contains the Tower of Hercules, one of the symbols of the city,
which is an interesting Romanesque collection of streets, squares and medieval churches.
The Aquarium Finisterrae, the Domus and the Science Museum are some of the places that
show the more modern, recreational side of the provincial capital, which offers one of its
most beautiful facets in the wide beaches of Riazor and Orzán. All this is completed with

Costa da Morte (Coast of Death) is an area of important marine ecosystems, with steep
cliffs, dunes and fishing villages with traditional lighthouses and beaches.
The characteristic landscape in the interior is formed by mountains and green valleys. Its
natural resources include particularly the Fraguas de Eume Nature Reserve, the Corrubedo
Dune Complex and the lakes of Carregal and Vixán.
The town of Fisterra was established on the site of an ancient fishing village, and still
preserves its traditional layout. Towns like Muxía, with its famous chapel of Nosa Señora
da Barca; Camariñas, where they still hand-make their wonderful bobbin laces; Laxe, with
an important fishing port that takes up a wide inlet, and Malpica, located in the region of
Bergantiños, mark the journey to Caión, the fishing village where our journey through
Costa da Morte ends.

LOCATION: A CORUÑA
It’s always a pleasure to visit the Tower of Hercules, declared a World Heritage site by
UNESCO, and the beautiful bay of the city of A Coruña. But if you’re offered the chance
to see it all from the heights, it sounds even better. There are two original ways to get a
bird’s-eye view of the city:
You can take a lift in the shape of a glassed-in sphere, which will carry you up Mount San
Pedro to a height of 100 m. Once you reach the top, you’ll have a unique panoramic view
from the interior all over the city.
Another option not to be missed is the experience of taking a half-hour sightseeing flight in
a light aircraft from the A Coruña airport. For 30 minutes, you’ll be treated to a highly
original view of the Burgo estuary, Santa Cristina beach, Oza, the city centre of A Coruña
and San Pedro park. As well as offering the best views of the coastline and the green
landscapes which are so typical of Galicia, you’ll have the chance to take the controls of the
plane yourself so you can say you’ve made your maiden flight.

CIFP Compostela
LOCATION: SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
The Galician capital is synonymous with the Camino, an ancient pilgrimage route, born in
the 9th century, that has linked the city with the rest of Europe ever since. Every year many
thousands of pilgrims set out on foot, by bike, or even on horseback, to live this experience
that combines adventure and spirituality. The final goal is the Cathedral in Santiago, one of
the sacred cities of Christendom.
Its historic centre has been designated a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
Art and culture, but nature too. Santiago has many parks and gardens. An intense green
pervades everything, not only within the city, but also in its surrounding area, where
mountains and forests with luxuriant vegetation await.

CIFP Politécnico Santiago
LOCATION: SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
The Cathedral of Santiago is the end of the pilgrim's journey and its monumentality is
worthy of such a deed. It is a key Romanesque work in which numerous architectonic
styles converge.
The construction of the cathedral began in the year 1075, during the reign of Alfonso VI
and was promoted by Bishop Diego Peláez. Work was carried out under the orders of
maestro Esteban on the remains of old temples raised in devotion to the saint. It was built
with three naves and a Latin cross plan, on a surface area of around 8,300 square metres.
Its multiple extensions have increased the different architectonic styles in the building
(Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Plateresque and Neoclassical). The Portico de la Gloria is
the main entrance. It was constructed by Maestro Mateo in 1188 and houses hundreds of
figures representing the Apocalypse. In it, the figure of the Apostle St. James appears to
welcome the pilgrims from the Mullion, sustained on a column. The Obradoiro façade of
the Cathedral was the work of Fernando de Casas y Novoa, and it is considered one of the
greatest expressions of the Spanish Baroque period.

CIFP Coroso
LOCATION: SANTA UXIA DE RIBEIRA
Santa Uxía de Ribeira is the capital of the region of Barbanza (A Coruña). Ribeira's port
was of little importance on the region, partly due to several incursions of vikings, saracens
and pirates from the 11th to 18th centuries. Nevertheless, it grew constantly to become one
of Galicia's most important fishing ports towards the late 18th century. At that time
businessmen of catalonia arrived in Ribeira and created a successful salting fish industry.
King Alfonso XIII granted Ribeira the title of City on 1906.
Economically, Ribeira (or Riveira) is very dependent on the sea and it constitutes one of
the most important shallow-water fishing ports in Spain. Cultivation of mussels and turbots
represents an important source of income. The town also has splendid expectations facing
the increase of tourism.

LOCATION: FERROL
The sea has been a vital constant in the growth of this town, first as a fishing village and
later as a military stronghold.
This town is 52 kilometres from La Coruña. It is full of contrasts, and the charm of its
roots as a fishing village lives on in its streets and traditions. Ferrol old town, the Modernist
La Magdalena neighbourhood, the La Cortina defensive walls (18th century), and the
castles of San Felipe and La Palma are just some of its attractions. The main event in the
town, however, is the Easter week celebrations, which have the National Tourist Interest
designation. They are usually held in March or April, depending on when Easter falls.
