The challenges of cityliving such as congestion, increasingdemand and power outages, climatechanges and such, will impact howwe live. It takes a lot of work andparticipation, not just from thegovernment and the businesses, butalso individuals to make the smart citya reality. But it is achievable.
There are major cities out there haveembarked on smart city projects,
including Dubai, Tokyo, Seoul,New York, Shanghai, Singapore,Amsterdam and Cairo. Somehave smart systems, smart energymanagement or intelligent trafcsystems; others have smart watermanagement systems. Peter Cave, Country Presidentof Schneider Electric Malaysiain October last year said moreMalaysians are now familiar withthe idea of green living but as awhole, the awareness is still relativelylow. MSC-Malaysia as backbone forSmart City InitiativeThe introduction of MalaysiaMultimedia Super Corridor (MSC-Malaysia) in 1996 is the starting point
for Malaysia initiative in developingSmart City.
MSC-Malaysia is a dedicated 15X 50 km Corridor, stretching fromthe Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC)in the north to the Kuala LumpurInternational Airport (KLIA) in thesouth; and encompasses Cyberjaya(the Technology Core) and Putrajaya(the new administrative capital ofMalaysia) is divided into three phasesfrom 1996 to 2020.
In Phase 1 (1996-2003), MSC-Malaysia was successfully created.Every milestone set for Phase 1 wassurpassed.
The world population is moving
from rural to urban locations in rapidpace. Urban populations will growby an estimated 2.3 billion over thenext 40 years, and as much as 70percent of the worlds populationwill live in cities by 2050.
According to the McKinsey GlobalInstitutes extensive study ofglobal cities, 80% of global GDP isgenerated in cities with 50% in the380 major cities of the developedworld and 10% in the largest 220

Iskandar Malaysia the Pilot Regionfor a Smart City Model in MalaysiaAccording to Iskandar Regional
Development Authority (IRDA)Chief Executive Ofcer Datuk IsmailIbrahim, in an interview with The Star,the Iskandar Malaysia Smart CityFramework is based on three mainpillars: economy, environment andsocial aspects.
In Phase 2, a web of similar corridorswill be established in Malaysia, anda global framework of cyber laws will
be passed; furthermore at least fourof ve intelligent cities will be linkedto other global cities worldwide.In Phase 3, Malaysia will evolve intoone Multimedia Super Corridor. AnInternational Cybercourt of Justicewill be established in MSC-Malaysiaand 12 intelligent cities will be linkedto the global information highway.
He says smart integration ofinvestments in human and socialcapital, combining hard and soft
infrastructure that fuel sustainableeconomic development, a highquality of life, wise managementof natural resources, throughparticipatory governance.
The smart city programme willbe applied in Nusajaya whosedevelopment has already embracedthe smart city concept.

Iskandar Malaysia the countrys rst economic growth corridor was launched on Nov 4, 2006. It was then knownas the South Johor Economic Region. In April 2008, the name was changed to Iskandar Malaysia in honour ofthe late Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail of Johor.
Iskandar Malaysia covers a 2,217sqkm area in the southernmost part of Johor. Three times bigger thanSingapore and twice the size of Hong Kong, Iskandar Malaysia is divided into ve agship development zones:Johor Baru City Centre, Nusajaya, Eastern Gate Development, Western Gate Development and Senai-Kulai.

On 1st May 2014, U.S. GreenBuilding Council (USGBC) releasedits countries ranking for Leadershipin Energy and EnvironmentalDesign (LEED) outside of theUnited States, demonstrating theglobal reach of the movement andit reects the global adaptability ofthe worlds most widely used andrecognized system guiding thedesign, construction, operations andmaintenance of green buildings.
The ranking countries for LEEDoutside of the U.S. is based oncumulative gross square meters(GSM) of space certied to LEED ineach nation as of April 2014.

Kingdom yang telah menubuhkanMahkamah Teknologi dan Pembinaan(TCC).
Perlaksanaan CIPAA diumumkanInisiatif penubuhan MahkamahPembinaan bermula seiring dengancadangan pelaksaanan Akta Bayarandan Adjudikasi Industri Pembinaan(CIPAA). Di dalam ucapan aluannya,Menteri Kerja Raya, Datuk HajiFadillah Haji Yusof mengumumkanperlaksanakan CIPAA yangberkuatkuasa pada 15 Mei 2014,
sehari selepas perasmian MahkamahPembinaan.
Pelaksanaan CIPAA bakalmemberikan kelegaan besarkepada industri pembinaan diMalaysia kerana akta ini bertindaksebagai timbang tara yangberpotensi menyelesaikan masalahberkaitan kelewatan pembayarandan pertikaian pembinaan yangberpanjangan.
Melangkah ke hadapan, CIDBtelah menubuhkan satu unit untukmengesan dan menganalisis kes-kes yang dibawa ke MahkamahPembinaan untuk mengkaji apakahpunca lazim pertikaian yang berlaku
dalam lingkungan industri. Disamping itu, CIDB juga merancanguntuk mendapatkan gambaran yanglebih mengenai isu-isu yang spesikberhubung industri pembinaan diMalaysia.
14 APRIL, Kuala Lumpur DuaMahkamah Pembinaan yang pertamadi Malaysia, masing-masing terletakdi Kuala Lumpur dan Shah Alamdirasmikan penubuhannya hari inioleh Ketua Hakim Negara, Tun ArinZakaria.
Kedua-dua mahkamah khas iniberperanan menyelesaikan pertikaianyang berlaku di dalam industripembinaan telah direalisasikankewujudannya pada April tahun lalu,setelah Lembaga Industri Pembinaan
Malaysia (CIDB) membuat usulcadangan kepada Badan Kehakimanpada Januari 2013.
Penubuhan mahkamah khasini dijangka dapat mengubahpersekitaran bisnes di dalam industripembinaan negara. Pertikaian didalam industri pembinaan juga dapatdiselesaikan dengan lebih cepatoleh hakim-hakim yang mempunyaikepakaran dan berpengalaman
dalam kes-kes pembinaan,Kewujudan mahkamah khas ini jugatelah meletakkan Malaysia sebagaiantara negara-negara terawal didunia yang mempunyai mahkamahkhas untuk industri pembinaan.Negara pertama adalah United

Brigade, program CSR CIDB danpenggiat industri pembinaan.
Timbalan Menteri Kerja Raya, DatukRosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin telahmeluangkan masa untuk merasmikandan menyempurnakan penyerahanbalairaya baru tersebut kepadaJabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli(JAKOA) Pahang.

(IBS) hasil inovasi tempatan, DuraliteMalaysia Sdn. Bhd yang berbesarhati menyumbangkan bahan binaanuntuk projek tersebut. PersatuanKontraktor Melayu Malaysia pulamenyumbangkan kepakaran sebagaipengurus projek dan membekalkantenaga kerja bagi menyiapkanbangunan yang dianggarkan bernilaiRM160,000 tersebut.

Majlis graduasi yang disempurnakanoleh Menteri Kerja Raya, DatukFadillah Yusof itu adalah sebahagiandaripada 28,000 belia dan personelbinaan yang disasar oleh CIDBMalaysia untuk dilatih pada tahun ini.Tahun lepas, CIDB Malaysia telahberjaya melatih 27,424 personelbinaan dan 75 peratus daripadanya

Mengikut statistik kemalangan ditapak pembinaan yang dikeluarkanJabatan Keselamatan dan KesihatanPekerjaan (JKKP) pada tahun 2013,sebanyak 164 kes kemalangan telahdilaporkan, di mana daripada jumlahitu, 69 adalah kemalangan maut, 12kes hilang keupayaan kekal dan 83kes membabitkan kecederaan ringan.
Manakala pada bulan Januari 2014pula, dua kes kemalangan mautdan enam kes kecederaan telahdilaporkan. Sementara pada Februari2014, angka kes yang membabitkanmaut meningkat sebanyak tigakes menjadikannya lima kes padabulan berkenaan dengan tujuhkes kecederaan dilaporkan. Walaubagaimanapun, tiada kes kehilanganupaya kekal dilaporkan untuk kedua-dua bulan berkenaan.
SELANGOR Bagi memastikankontraktor binaan mengikutperaturan keselamatan yangditetapkan, Menteri Kerja Raya,Datuk Fadillah Yusof sendiri telahturun padang bagi mengetuaioperasi Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR)untuk penguatkuasaan tapak binaanbersama CIDB Malaysia, Jabatan
Imigresen, Majlis PerbandaranShah Alam dan Jabatan KesihatanMalaysia.
Operasi tersebut diadakan di tapakpembinaan Kampus UniKL-MalaysiaInstitute of Aviation Technology(MIAT), Jalan Lapangan TerbangSubang bulan lepas.
Datuk Fadillah Yusof berkata,kerjasama ini sebagai langkahpelaksanaan penguatkuasaan
terhadap tapak-tapak pembinaanyang berkemungkinan berisiko
mendatangkan kemalangan kepadapekerja dan orang awam.
Kebanyakan insiden ataukemalangan di tapak binaanberlaku kerana sikap ambil mudahkontraktor dan pemaju terhadapisu-isu keselamatan termasuklahmenggunakan peralatan lama yangtidak selamat digunakan.
Justeru operasi ini dibuat bagi
mengenalpasti langkah-langkah yangperlu diambil supaya kejadian tidakdingini berlaku, katanya semasasidang media selepas operasi yangturut disertai Ketua Eksekutif CIDBDato Sri Ir Dr Judin Abdul Karim.

The trend for sourcing sustainableproducts by the construction industrywill impact building materialsmanufacturers as developers andcontractors of green buildings factorin environmental considerations suchas a greenhouse gas emissions aspart of their procurement decisionsand supplier management.
A research conducted by CarbonTrust in the UK on multinationalcompanies reveals that, over the
