Definition of BIM…


– It is the digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a built facility creating a shared knowledge resource for the information about the building and forming a reliable basis for decisions during its lifecycle, from earliest conception to demolition. • RIBA definition

– A digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of an asset in the built environment, and a shared knowledge resource , gfor information about that asset forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition. • AECOM definition


• Building Information Modelling should be considered in the context of a verb and not a noun,

“building an information model”, the process of generating and i j t d t th h t th lif l f t T i llmanaging project data throughout the lifecycle of an asset. Typically

utilises 3D, real-time, dynamic modelling software to capture and reuse critical project data. Building Information Modelling solutions have th h t i tithree characteristics:

– they create and operate on digital databases for collaboration– they manage change throughout those databases so that change to any part of the

database is coordinated in all other parts (parametric)– they capture and preserve information for reuse by other members of the AEC value

chainchain.
