As we enter the associational budget plan-ning process for 2013 – 14 in both Northeast and Morehouse associations, it is essential that we review the vision and purpose of our cooper-ative partnership. God created us as social beings, and nothing is more natural than for us to congregate and associate. Churches have a history of voluntarily interacting with each other. Collective activity is a powerful force that has the poten-tial of bringing glory to God, encouragement to Christians, and

the defeat of evil.

The local Baptist Association serves as a support system for its member churches. It is not merely a segment of a denomina-tional hierarchy. It is a functional entity that has the local church as its focus. The association, as a support system, is designed to enhance the work of pastors, staff, other ministers, and congre-gations in general. The association equips, assists, motivates, and empowers local churches to carry out their God-given man-date to spread the Gospel to all the world. In this way, churches do not give part of their resources to the Association, but

through the Association.

An association of churches cooperating together can do more for the Lord’s work than a single church working alone. The local association is not the primary focus, but rather the Lord, His people, and His congregations working together to accom-plish more. Rick Robbins, a fellow Director of Missions writes, “the primary feature of the local Baptist Association is its’

spiritual life, not its’ organizational structure.”

The Baptist association is a voluntary organization. Baptist churches willingly seek to join with other Baptist churches for the purpose of prayer, ministries, training, fellowship, doctrinal emphasis, missions, and ultimately working together to spread

the Gospel in our area and beyond.

As your church plans its budget this year, please consider increasing the amount given to carry out the work of the associ-ation. Remember we stand strong against the evil of our day when we band together for the sake of the Gospel. Your local association is only as effective as the support it receives from
