The Singles Ministry is still a new ministry to First Baptist Bryan, and we are excited about the opportunities that lay before us as we

reach out to this demographic here in the Brazos Valley. I was fortunate to be able to attend the 2017 Metro Singles Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado this past month.

This year’s conference was at the Glen Eyrie Conference Retreat owned and operated by The Navigators. This is a beautiful venue in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, more specifi cally in the middle of the Garden of the Gods. It was also my pleasure to invite some of our singles ministry leadership; Skip and Sherry Suggs, Jenny Finch, Arline Hausler, and Howard Johnson.

Over the course of the week we were able to meet with, and get to know over twenty-fi ve singles ministry leaders from California, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Michigan, Georgia, and Oklahoma. Most of the singles ministry leaders come from large churches with large singles ministries. One of the best parts of the conference was the opportunity to

get together, one-on-one, with these leaders and discuss what was working, what was not working, what to promote, and what to stay away from.

Discussions ranged from the best age division for the ministry, the best way to recruit leadership, the best way to disciple singles, to the best types of ministry wide fellowships. I learned very quickly that for singles ministry to be successful your senior pastor, staff , lay leadership, and church in general have to be supportive of it. I am blessed to be in a church that values Single Adult Ministry. First Baptist Bryan was one of the only churches present that had a high level of support for single adults from the entire congregation.

One of the discussions that really tugged on my heart was the discussion of reaching Millennials—adults aged 21 to 26. This is one of the most neglected

demographics in the church today. In many ways, Millennials are a post-church generation. They believe in God, but they have a

deep distrust of the local church. Individualism drives this post-church generation, the drive to avoid collective rules and beliefs, to express oneself fully, and to discover personal truth. Social justice is highly sought in this younger generation but most of these young adults do not see the church as a force for good in the world. Again, this is a generalization of the younger generation and God loves this generation.

When Jesus told us to “Go and make disciples of all nations” he told us to reach out to all demographics, not to pick and choose. Please join with me in prayer that God will open our eyes to the needs of the Millennial.

Another aspect of our week at Glen Eyrie was the guest speakers that were brought in. Roy and Margaret Fitzwater came and discussed Sabbath: Ministry for the Long Haul, God’s Rx for Life. They led us in discussion of Sabbath and the need for true personal renewal. If you are reading this article, I would encourage you to calendar your Sabbath, make it happen, for you and for your family—remember self-care is never a selfi sh act it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to off er others, myself in service to God.

We also heard from Lisa Anderson, from Focus on the Family, who has a radio program called Boundless. She is a huge encouragement to young single adults discussing social media, relationships, adulthood, and faith. Go to boundless.org to get her podcast, blog, and articles that relate

to young single adults.

Finally, we heard from Allan Taylor from LifeWay Christian Resources Sunday School division. Allen walked us through what it means to be a disciple of Christ and how to train others up as disciples. He introduced us to the diff erent resources available to churches through LifeWay. His passion and enthusiasm was contagious and an encouragement to all of us.

Glen Eyrie was a beautiful venue for our conference. Each morning I was able to walk in the cool, humid free, climate of central Colorado. It was so easy to pray and meditate on scripture in this environment. The Scripture that jumped out to me during this week was Philippians 3:13-14:

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

These verses tell me to not look back. Learn from the past so that you will not repeat the mistakes of the past. Life is tough so press on in all aspects of life. Look ahead,

focus on the goal of developing strong disciples of Jesus Christ so that we can win the prize, a deeper relationship with Him, the only relationship that can help us in all aspects of life.

Thank you church family, for allowing us to go and learn more about Singles Ministry.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for another fantastic year of Garage Sale! Without the overwhelming generosity of our church

members year after year this sale would not be possible. You give of your property, your time, your money, and your prayers, for each of those things we are so grateful!

This year’s sale was another record-breaking year with $39,490.88 brought in! That money is made 25¢ at a time through the dedicated work of our youth, their families, and volunteers who give of their time simply to see God’s kingdom served. The money that is raised is, yes astounding, but it is by no means the only thing worthy of praise that comes out of Garage Sale.

As a youth ministry we pray specifi cally for our customers. We know that some of them are there just to score a deal, but we also know that some are brought there by God to be ministered to in ways they could not anticipate. Every customer has a youth that walks with them to their car helping them to carry their purchases and that youth also asks the intentional question of “How

can I pray for you?” They don’t ask if they could pray for them or just state that they will be praying for them. They make the bold request for them to name something right then and there that they might pray for immediately! God is faithful to move in these moments. This year we prayed with hundreds of people and I want to share a few of the ways God moved through those bold off ers for prayer.

My personal favorite was how God worked through and in a group of three high school girls who dedicated almost their entire time at Garage Sale to this ministry. While we off ered for every customer to be helped to their car by a youth some refused or some just had so few purchases that they didn’t see the need. These girls made it their mission that not one of our customers would make it out of our parking lot without prayer. They chased down (lovingly) and

prayed for dozens and dozens of people who were unaccompanied by a youth. They

recognized that our fi rst priority at Garage Sale is not to make money, but to make a kingdom impact!

One woman was helped to her car and—like so many others—accepted the off er to be specifi cally prayed for by one of our youth. In a day fi lled with similar encounters, the amazing thing was that God had perfectly placed her with a youth helper who was the same age and had the same name as her daughter, whom she desperately wanted prayer for. God was able to use these seemingly small coincidences to encourage her in a way that only He could.

Lastly, there is the testimony of the woman who came through our sale who had been so hurt and so betrayed by a church and the people in it that she had stayed away from all churches for 11 years. She happened upon our sale and decided to stop in. God used the way she was served, loved, and prayed for to move her heart of stone and convict her that she needed to return to Him and return to church.

These are just a few of the countless ways that God moved through Garage Sale.

All in all, we as a youth ministry just want to let you know that our God was glorifi ed and will continue to be because of what took place at Garage Sale 2017. As always the funds raised will go to pay for camps, mission trips, and activities throughout the year for

the youth who worked it. Church family, thank you again for all you did to support us! We are already looking forward to next year!

Preschool is growing by leaps and bounds. We minister to many more children than we did even one or two years ago (and for

longer periods of time), which makes my heart swell with gratitude to the Lord. Each little life is so important—and each little life also represents a family here at our church learning about the Lord and telling others the Good News. If that’s not exciting, I don’t know what is!

Preschool is one of the most important ministries of the church, hands down! Preschoolers learn faster than they will at any other time in their lives, so, naturally, they learn more in the preschool years than they will in all the rest of their years put together! Their little minds are sponges and their hearts are wide open to hearing all about and learning to love Jesus Christ.

Preschool ministry helps more than just children. Parents’ hearts open up to a church when they know their child is safe and loved. Thus, those of us in preschool ministry give our very best to the children and their families, which makes our entire church stronger.

Barna research shows that if children are not saved by the age of 13, they are unlikely to ever choose to follow Him once they pass that age. This is why

we take every opportunity in the younger years to point them to the Bible, Jesus, and the church so that they can choose to follow Him once they are old enough and ready.

As we look forward to refreshing our building, equipment, and supplies, we cannot forget that the most important resource for teaching little ones about Jesus is people! Now that our Sunday School has combined into one hour, we have new (and wonderful!) challenges each week. Now, our Sunday School is VERY full and we are opening new rooms to accommodate the boom.

If you would like to awaken little hearts to Jesus, we have some opportunities for the 2017-2018 school year.

Division DirectorsThese coordinators help the ministry to a specifi c age group in several key ways. They plan lessons and gather necessary supplies. They assist teachers in any needs that arise. They help enlist teachers and subs. Finally, they minister to the parents and teachers. The time commitment is 3-5 hours a week.

TeachersWe teach in every age group—babies through

kindergarten. The needs of each group diff er tremendously, so virtually any teacher preference can be accommodated. Some like to hold babies. Some want children who can communicate and use the restroom on their own. In all cases, children need warm hearts to love them and their families in the name of Jesus. And because relationships are so important in teaching preschoolers, we ask for a yearly commitment.

Welcome Desk / RegistrationDuring the contemporary service, we need volunteers to register guests, help with check-in computers, walk guests to their rooms, and open magnet doors. (This need is immediate!)

FloatersDuring the contemporary service, we need fl oaters to assist the weekly teacher with varying classroom needs. This position requires zero prep and would probably be diff erent each week—diff erent rooms and diff erent children with diff erent needs.

Resource VolunteersThese helpers focus more on the “stuff ” other people need to be successful in their ministry. The ministry may need toys sanitized, rooms stocked with supplies, and/or other resource organization.

Whenever a church helper volunteers with minors, we ask that they agree to a background check and complete abuse training. In addition, we ask that volunteers be adult church members. These standards help us ensure a safe environment for the little children we are honored to serve.

In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus said, “The harvest truly is plentiful but the workers are few, ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest fi eld.” Therefore, we pray! We have had a few months to observe the Sunday School schedule changes, so we have a clearer understanding of how to best serve preschoolers and their families as we go into our launch for this new Sunday School year. And, good news, the preschoolers are already here and excited to learn and be loved! We invite you to come join us in life-changing discipleship as we serve together to make an eternal diff erence in preschoolers and their families.

My heart is overfl owing with thankfulness at the end of another year of Vacation Bible School! I really cannot adequately

thank our amazing volunteers and staff who gave so selfl essly to make it a tremendous week of ministry to children! It truly takes a village, or at least a healthy church Body, and I am so grateful for the willingness to serve that I have seen from our church and staff .

Throughout the week we had over 250 kids enrolled and about 150 volunteers. We had seven who made a profession of faith for the fi rst time and several others who wanted to talk more with an adult, or are interested in baptism. While the focused week of teaching and activity has fi nished, we still have lots to do to reach out to the children and families that attended, as well as counseling those who made a decision. Please continue to be in prayer for the seeds that

were planted and the families that were touched.

Of course VBS isn’t just about the numbers and stats, it’s about the real-life transformations that take place when a child comes to know Jesus personally. One of the kids who made a profession of faith this year has come the last few years with a former teacher of his who has stayed in touch.

(What a great example of the role we all have to bring kids to Jesus!) But this year, something was diff erent. This child who mainly came to enjoy the snack and recreation time in years

past was very interested and tender towards everything that had to do with Jesus. Each night

he enthusiastically raised his hand to share what he learned in his class. Each day the tenderness and hunger seemed to grow, and culminated on Thursday during our Decision Service with third

and fourth graders. That night, this sweet child prayed to receive Christ as his Savior and Lord. He asked his teacher who has faithfully brought him if we do this “church thing” more often and expressed interest in Sunday School. Stories like these are the reason we do VBS and the reason we need you to continue praying for the Lord’s work to be carried out to completion!

Another encouraging result I saw this year was the response from kids during the Decision Service who have already made a profession of faith and been baptized. You would be encouraged to see the number of children who have already made this life-changing decision, and followed through in obedience in baptism. Pray for these students as well, that their roots will grow deep and they will be discipled to become mature men and women of faith.

While VBS week may be over, please don’t stop praying for these young people who have made decisions. Let us be a church that persists in prayer.

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
