    Resident Aliens

    1 John 2.15-29

    Resident Aliens

It is the clever title of a book written in 1989 by Stanley Hauerwas

    and William Willimon.

Christians are to realize they do not belong to this world, even

    though they live in it.

John echoes this sentiment. (1 John 2.15-29)

Do not love the world! (15-17)

We must choose between God and the world!

The same choice is given in the Garden of Eden long ago. (Genesis 3.1-6)

Eve, then Adam, is tempted by the lust of the flesh , the lust of the eye , and

    the pride of life.

The same choice is given to Jesus in the desert. (Luke 4.1-13)

Satan tempts Jesus with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life.

    Satans strategy has never changed.

Jesus prays that his disciples may know their relationship to the world. (John 17.15-17)

Do not be fooled by those who do! (18-23)

Some, sadly, still try to have it both ways.

John suggests that if one is linked (even slightly) to the world , he is opposed to Christ!

Jesus says, He who is not with Me is against Me (Mt 12.30)

Walk worthy of our calling! (24-29)

How can we live in a way that is worthy of our calling?

Let Gods Word live in us! (24-25)

Let Gods Spirit lead us! (26-27)

    Practice righteousness ! (28-29)

    What about us?

Are we living like resident aliens?
