FORWARDING SERVICE REQUESTED

Dear Rumple Family,

Fresh on the heels of a wonderful celebration of the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation, with beautiful music (thank you Dave McCollum, Eric Luke, and our talented choir), light hearted drama, theological reflection and study, we are somehow headed into the month of November.

October was a busy month at Rumple and I wanted to share with you about some important events and decisions. First, the Session received the resignation of our Director of Christian Education, Cameron Womack. (There is more about this on a subsequent page of this Slate and Stone.) The Personnel Committee and Session are meeting to discuss interim staffing to cover Cameron’s areas of responsibility and we are calling on each and every one of you to lend a hand as well. Please speak to me or to any elder about ways that you can help in this time of transition.

At their retreat on October 14, the Session agreed to appoint a “dream team” to explore the vision and mission of Rumple as we head into 2018 and beyond. The hope is to include many of you in the kinds of conversations the Session has been having this year- what makes Rumple special? Who is God call-ing Rumple to be and what is God calling us to do? How we will accomplish that? In light of Camer-on’s resignation, the future staffing needs of Rumple will surely be a part of these discussions as well. Expect to hear more about this in the new year.

Also at their retreat on October 14, the Session agreed that Rumple would assume “administrative oversight” of Blowing Rock CARES. As you may know, this food pantry and emergency assistance ministry has been housed at Rumple for over four years. Much of their all-volunteer leadership is ready to retire or cut back on their time commitments to the ministry. Instead of closing down this valuable ministry, the board of Blowing Rock CARES approached Rumple about assuming adminis-trative oversight. I convened a task force in September who then made a report to the Session. Blow-ing Rock CARES will remain a 501c3 with a separate board, separate bank accounts, separate bylaws. Rumple will now have oversight of the board, who will report to the Session, on a regular basis. Rum-ple will appoint board members, but not all will be members or Rumple, intentionally. Blowing Rock CARES will remain a mission of the entire community. A period of transition has begun and Tim Har-ris, if elected by the board, will begin in 2018 as Board chair, taking over from Linda Laughter, who has led this ministry from its inception. I am thrilled that Rumple could step in to help with this tran-sition so that this valuable ministry can continue in our community. If you can help with Blowing Rock CARES or if you have questions, please direct them to Tim Harris or to me.

I remain grateful for the many ways that God is leading us at Rumple.

Called to Worship Empowered to Serve

A Mission Church

Bringing Members In, Sending Disciples Out

Rumple gives thanks for five years of service at Rumple to our secretary, Hazel Smithey, and

our custodian, Heather Sigmon.

On Sunday, November 5, the flowers in the sanctuary will be given to the glory of God and

in thanksgiving for the ministry of Hazel and Heather, given by an anonymous member who

wanted to show all of our appreciation for their dedicated work.

Heather began her service at Rumple in May of 2012. She works 20 hours a week and is

responsible for keeping Rumple’s many facilities clean. She also purchases and orders sup-

plies and works for every wedding. Heather lovingly cares for the many live plants at Rum-

ple. She has a degree from Catawba Valley Community College in horticulture and is pas-

sionate about caring for God’s creation.

Hazel began her service at Rumple in October 2012. Hazel works part-time, Monday- Thurs-

day. She is the voice and face of Rumple for many members and visitors as she answers the

phone and greets folks who enter the building during the week. In addition to creating the

weekly bulletin, she creates the monthly Slate and Stone, coordinates mailings, keeps the

church records up to date, and handles most office tasks. If you have not ever asked Hazel

about her dog, Ernie, you may want to ask her about him the next time you see her.

Rumple gives thanks for the faithful ministry of these two church staff. When you see them

next, please stop and thank them for their ministry among us for five years.

Rumple gives thanks to Dave McCollum, Eric Luke, and our choir for the wonderful music

they led on Reformation Sunday, October 29. The beautiful music began on Sunday morn-

ing when they joined with the choir from First Presbyterian Church of Boone and sang two

anthems at Rumple then headed down the road and sang the same two anthems to close

out worship at First Presbyterian. Then, the choirs and music leaders returned at four that

same afternoon to lead worshippers in a wonderful Hymn Festival that both celebrated the

Reformation, and guided us through the church year. Thank you, especially, to Dave

McCollum for his vision and leadership for this extra special Reformation Sunday 2017.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Under the leadership of our Youth Intern, Cassidy Nooner and the Youth Committee, our Middle and High School youth are active participants in the life of Rumple Church. We
welcome members and friends to any and all of our meetings, retreats and conferences. Contact Cassidy Nooner at [email protected] to stay connected!
November 26—No Youth Groups due to Thanksgiving Weekend
How can I help? The Youth are doing a Christmas Tree Ornament Fundraiser starting
November 19. The ornaments will be great gifts for friends, or they will make a beautiful
addition to your own Christmas tree. We need red ribbon donated! If this is something you
can help with, please email Cassidy Nooner at [email protected].
Rumple Youth
Rumple Sweatshirts for Sale The Youth
Group is selling Rumple Sweatshirts for $8.00
each. Please see any youth member or church
staff to get your sweatshirt. Most sizes are
available.
Stay connected with Rumple! Like us on Face-book, visit our website www.rumplechurch.org, Follow the youth on Instagram, #rumpleyouth, and add your email to our weekly e-newsletter
In this month of Thanksgiving Rumple Church says
thank you to our Staff
It is almost time for poinsettias! Rumple
will display the traditional poinsettias in
the sanctuary the month of December.
There will be forms available in November
for you to purchase a poinsettia in honor or
in memory of a loved one, or you may make
a donation to WeCan.
Can you help and check that the church doors are closed when
you exit the building? Rumple has many doors and there are lots of
people in and out of the building each day. This is a wonderful thing!
But, the staff often finds doors that have not been pulled closed- particularly the sanctuary doors
closest to Main Street. Thanks!
We didn't get your name! The accountants received one estimate of giving (pledge) card
without a name. Rumple wants to give you credit for your intended gift for 2018. If you
turned in a card and indicated you wanted to volunteer with local missions, this card could
belong to you. If you want to check that the accountants have your name and pledge for
2018, please call or email Hazel in the church office, office @rumplechurch.org. Hazel has a
list of names (only) of folks whose estimate of giving card the accountants have received.
Thanking Cameron Womack
Dear Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church Family,
I ask you to join with me in giving thanks to God for the gifts that
Cameron Womack has shared with this church family for four years.
On October 24, the chair of Personnel, Mike Rhyne, and I accepted
Cameron’s resignation as Rumple’s Director of Christian Education.
The Rumple family is invited to share words of thanks and support to
Cameron through cards and via email. A basket has been set up on
Hazel’s desk for you to leave cards. The Session also invites members and friends of the con-
gregation to make contributions to a love offering which we will present to Cameron. Please
designate your gift in the memo line as “Cameron love offering” by Sunday, November 5th.
Cameron has asked that we not have a reception or a public thank you in worship and we
have agreed to respect her wishes. She will use remaining vacation days during her final two
weeks with Rumple. I know many of you will want to say thank you and goodbye so we hope
you will find ways to connect with Cameron personally. Cameron’s mailing address is: 405
Belmont Boone, NC 28607. Her email address will remain [email protected].
In gratitude to God for her gifts for ministry and especially for the many ways Cameron
helped to lead this congregation through a couple of seasons of transition and loss, please
join me in thanking Cameron for her work and ministry here and in wishing her every bless-
ing on the next adventure God has in store for her.
Your Pastor,
Kathy
Welcome New Members
Evan Adair joined Rumple on October 1 as an affiliate member but
is no stranger to the Rumple family. Evan began his third year as a
choral scholar this fall. He is also now volunteering as a youth advi-
sor and fills in as choir director when Dave is away. Evan graduat-
ed in the spring of 2017 from ASU with a master’s degree in music.
He is working in insurance and teaching music in our area.
Vicki Hamilton joined Rumple on October 1. She transferred her
membership from First Presbyterian Church of High Point. Vicki
splits her time between Blowing Rock and High Point, where she has
lived for 35 years. She is retired and enjoys painting as a hobby.
She has already gotten involved at Rumple in missions and fellow-
ship.
Rumple is Sharing Treasures New and Old in this our 130th year of sharing the Good News of the
Gospel in the High Country and beyond. Thanks to the generosity of so many in the Rumple family!
The estimates of giving for 2018, as of Tuesday, October 31, total $232,785 with 77 individuals/
families having made a good faith estimate for next year. The Stewardship Committee continues to
welcome your estimates of giving for 2018. It’s not too late to join this forward momentum to a
great new year of mission and ministry at Rumple.
Rumple at Work
The Session of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church consists of our pastor as moderator
and eleven ruling elders, elected by the congregation. They meet monthly on the fourth Mon-
day at 5:30. If you have items for the session, please see Kathy Beach, Session Moderator.
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but
keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12: 10-13
EMERGENCY FOOD NEED at Hospitality House: The food pantry and community kitchen at
Hospitality House in Boone is in desperate need of canned food, packaged food, dry goods, sugar,
soups, cereal, and other breakfast foods. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, a main
supplier of food for Hospitality House, had to divert their usual supplies to the many areas of the
Unites States impacted by hurricanes, flooding, and fires. You can drop off food at Hospitality
House at 338 Brook Hollow Rd, which is off of Bamboo Road in Boone, between 7am-7pm, 7
days a week. You can also mail a check to Hospitality House, PO Box 309, Boone, NC 28607, or
donate on their website, www.hosphouse.org.
Rumple on a Mission will continue our spotlight of Watauga County Habitat for Humanity with
a covenant church signing during worship on November 19. As a Watauga County Habitat for
Humanity Covenant Church, Rumple is committed to serving with Habitat to improve our com-
munity by building decent, affordable homes in partnership with families in need. The Watauga
Habitat Faith Build for the Love family is still under construction. Rumple is partnering with
Habitat and other local churches to build this home for the Love family. Rumple raised money for
the Love home last year and Rumple work crews in September this year helped with framing of
the Love home. If you, your Sunday School class, Circle, social group, etc., are interested in get-
ting involved with Watauga Habitat and the construction of the Love house, please contact Tim
Harris at 828-262-1067 or [email protected]
We also continue our monthly food collections for Blowing Rock C.A.R.E.S. Blowing Rock
C.A.R.E.S. is a food bank that helps provide basic non-perishable food to families and individuals
in Watauga County. The Blowing Rock C.A.R.E.S. food pantry is open for clients on Mondays
from 9 am to 1 pm right here at Rumple. The November items of need for Blowing Rock
C.A.R.E.S. are canned tuna, canned tomatoes, fruit in natural juices, and toilet tissue.
Please bring your items throughout the month of November and leave them in the shopping cart
in the church lobby.
THANK YOU to everyone who helped with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance hygiene kits! We
sent 186 kits to hurricane victims. While there is still much work to be done in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, these hygiene kits will help provide families with basic
toiletry and personal hygiene items during the recovery efforts.
The members and friends of Rumple have been especially generous for many
years in helping provide Christmas cheer to those children and families who are in special need of our love and care. The Angel Tree with the names, ages, and
clothing sizes of children needing our help will be displayed in the church lobby beginning Sunday, November 19. We hope you will choose an angel, purchase
and wrap gifts, and return the gifts to the office beside Kathy’s study or upstairs in classroom #4, by Sunday, December 10 so that they can be distributed to
families. You will also have the opportunity to buy a food/grocery gift card for a family. Please be sure to sign your name and phone number on the clipboards
beside the name and number of the child and/or family you choose. Any questions may be di-rected to Susan Suddreth at 263-0821 or Teresa Lentz at 295-3276. Thank you for your ongoing
support of this ministry that is such a special tradition of giving by the Rumple church family!
Rumple will give thanks to God for all the saints who have gone before us with a special prayer service on All Saints’ Day, Wednesday, November 1, at 6:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. The worship service will include special music, Scripture, and a time to mention and remem-
ber in prayer the saints of light from Rumple and each of our lives. Childcare will be provid-ed. Rumple will also remember all the saints from the Rumple family, who have joined the saints of light since All Saints’ Day 2016, in Sunday morning worship, November 5. Names of
the saints now in heaven will be listed in the bulletin and remembered in a special liturgy.
Go Sing It on the Mountain “Go Sing It on the Mountain,” is the title of the Christmas Cantata
that the choir, along with instrumentalists will present during the 11:00 am worship service on December 10, 2017. The new cantata
by North Carolina based composer, Pepper Choplin, features tradi-tional Christmas Carols along with some original settings of the timeless birth narrative. Employing a highly inventive mixture of
mountain melodies, folk hymns, spirituals, familiar carols, and origi-nal music that is sure to surprise and delight, "Go Sing It on the
Mountain" proclaims the good news from the prophet Isaiah's proc-lamation, "Comfort, O comfort my people!" to the final exuberant
celebration: "Joy to the world! Christ is born!" You might even see an old-time band with
Guitars, Mandolin, Banjo and Double Bass. Mark your calendars, December 10th, for “Go Sing It on the Mountain.” PRESBYTERIAN /EPISCOPAL CAM-
