132 Sacred Heart Parish Sunday, August 2, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last week, I was away on retreat. The law of the Church requires that priests make a week-long retreat every year for the good of their spiritual life. There are different types of retreats: some are private, di-rected retreats where the retreatant meets daily with a spiritual director, who gives him scriptural passag-es or other spiritual writings to reflect on throughout the day. Others are preached retreats, in which the Retreat Master gives talks each day on a specific theme to all of the retreatants. Last week, I attended the Priest Alumni Retreat at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary. The Priest Alumni Retreat is a preached re-treat offered every year to priest alumni of our seminary. The Retreat Master for my retreat last week was Father Frederick Miller, a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark who taught me when I was a seminarian at Saint Charles. Father Miller is an internationally re-spected theologian known for his great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He has written books on Saint Therese of Lisieux and Saint John Vianney. Father Miller is a dynamic speaker and an inspiring priest who gave us a lot on which to reflect. Retreats are not only for priests or religious. All Christians could benefit from making a retreat. In John’s Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples: “I no longer call you servants, but friends” (15:15). Any real friendship involves spending quality time together. The same is true of our friendship with God. Retreats provide us with the environment and the space needed to spend dedicated time with Jesus, who is our best Friend. For the past several years, Sacred Heart has offered parish retreat days during Advent and Lent. These are wonderful opportunities to grow in our spiritual life. We are also fortunate to be close to the Malvern Retreat House, which offers retreats for many different groups throughout our region. I hope that you will consider taking advantage of one of these opportunities in the future, and discover that going on retreat is a real blessing. May God bless you and Mary keep you, Father Shenosky

Caring for Friends Our Caring for Friends Outreach Ministry is in

need of meals and soups for our clients. Despite the heat, the friends and neighbors we

help find soup to be a comforting and easy meal to prepare. Please consider taking home some containers to fill with your homemade soup or chili. Please bring them back and place the filled containers in the freezer in our Caring For Friends

room at the end of the hall past the restrooms in church. Your support is appreciated as our homebound neighbors are

extremely grateful.

you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Prayer to Saint Michael

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.

Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan,

and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls,
