I am delighted that two of our young people attended a Youth Leadership Week at the Vincent Pallotti Center in Monroe New York. They have shared their experience in the letters reprinted below. We will be discussing with them and our Pastor’s Advisory Group about the next steps in forming a Youth Ministry for our Parish. God Bless them… Fr. John

Re: Pallottine Teenage Federation Christian Leadership Institute

Dear Father John, Mrs. Kogler, and Church of the Holy Spirit Parishioners:

Thank you for sending me to the CLI camp. I had a lot of fun and learned so much. The program has “leadership” in its title. To be a good leader, you need to be more than just bossy. Being a good leader takes skills and practice. We learned about organization, team building, leadership types, how to speak in public, and how to give presentations.

In all of our activities and classes we worked on building our own personal “war room.” Our war room is spiritual place to get away from the distractions of the world and be with God. Time spent in my war room with God is supposed to give me strength to “Be Bold” and “Be Joyful.” Being bold and joyful were two of the main themes of the week. A seminarian, Matt, explained to us that being joyful is about being happy and living the way Jesus wants me to live. Being bold is about not letting others knock you around because of your faith.

We did a lot of good work over the week, but we also had a lot of fun. We spent a day at Bear Mountain, had a picnic lunch and took pictures of each other demonstrating peace, friendship, compassion, community, and family. We spent a morning at a Mystery Room where we had to work as a team to solve clues and get out of the locked room. Finally, we did an obstacle course at the center as a team where members of our small groups were not allowed to speak, not allowed to use their hands or feet, or not allowed to see.

I met a lot of people and made many new friends. It was an excellent and exciting experience for me.

Thank you for thinking of me and giving me this opportunity.

Gratefully, Caitlin Healy

Hi Father John,

I would first off like to thank you for the opportunity you provided for Caitlin and I last week. We enjoyed it so much and I for one had one of the best weeks of my life. I think the easiest way to tell you what we did is just give you a simple run down of what we did each day. Tuesday: we watched the movie, “war room” and discussed what the characters meant and represented Wednesday: intros, team bonding, identification of what kind of leader we are Thursday: trip to Bear Mountain for team bonding hike up mountain Friday: trip to Palisades Mall for escape room on team bonding and learning how to work with one another (my group was able to escape the Hollywood Premier Room in 43 minutes) Friday: worked on being a better leader in aspects where we lack Saturday: completed an obstacle course to show how to work as a team and team dependency, also worked on learning body signs of your audience and how to speak loud and clear Sunday: wrapped up leadership qualities and discussed important parts of a team that you must have Every day we said prayer before meals, morning prayer, mass, afternoon prayer, and benediction. We worked on our own war rooms (a threefold cardboard where we wrote prayers to God.) We had 2 Question and Answer Sessions with Father Tom (who was there every day.) Again I would like to thank you for this amazing opportunity you have provided me.

Sincerely, Gina O’Shaughnessy

Religious Education Updates Planning for the upcoming year of Religious Education is in full swing. Registration for the 2018-19 year has been steady; classes are starting to fill up. Children cannot be placed in a class without the registration form (available on parish website: www.holyspirit-cortlandtmanor.org) or in the office. In addition to payment by check or cash, we are now accepting electronic payments. You can sign up for this through our parish website by clicking on the “WeShare” link (electronic giving). Catechists are needed for some classes. The qualifications include loving your faith and enjoy being around children. We will provide everything you need. Come join our wonderful team of catechists. We will be hiring a part-time administrative assistant to assist in all facets of the Program. Candidates must be dependable and welcoming. Please call the Office for information. Sign your child up for the best week of the summer! This summer’s Vacation Bible School promises to be filled with loads of fun for ages 4 through fifth grade. “Shipwrecked” will run from August 27 through 31. The registration form is on our website or available in the office. Rite of Christian of Adults Classes to begin in the Fall -

Once again this fall we will offer the opportunity to those adults who would like to become Catholics or are in need of completing the Sacraments of Holy Communion and/or Confirmation. We invite all parishioners to invite family members and friends to join us. If you or someone you know needs the Sacraments, please call the Parish Office to register for the classes. Classes are usually held on Sundays a couple of times a month from 1:30pm to 3pm. Candidates will receive their Sacraments at the Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday.

Sip, Chat, Grow!

All 30-, 40-, and 50-somethings are invited to Coffee and the Catechism on Saturday, 8/18/18 at 3pm. Come to Kurzhal's Coffee in downtown Peekskill for a casual conversation based on an excerpt from the Catechism. Let's get to know and talk about a core teaching of our faith over a cool drink!
