Parish Mission Statement

We, the members of Holy Ghost Parish, are one body of Roman Catholic

people with diverse gifts and blessings, who share responsibility for the

transformation of ourselves and our world according to the teachings and

example of Jesus Christ.

Fed by the Holy Spirit, we nurture our faith through private prayer, liturgy

and sacraments, through life-long learning and teaching of Gospel values,

and through love and support of each other.

Empowered by the same Spirit, we live our faith in action through the

ministries of service, social justice, evangelization and witness, because all

are called to one and the same goal: unity with God, now and forever.

Amen.

OBSERVANCES FOR THIS WEEK

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. (Genesis 3:1-6a) Question: The story of the Garden of Eden reveals that humanity’s first sin against God was that of disobedience. In what areas of your life do you struggle to obey God?

Psalm: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. (Psalm 51) Second Reading: For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so, through the obedience of one, the many will be made righteous. (Romans 5:19) Question: Paul saw Jesus’ obedience not only as reversing the disobedience of Adam, but also bestowing upon believers righteous and eternal life. What do you find most interesting about this revelation from Paul?

Gospel: At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. (Matthew 4:1) Question: Jesus resisted the devil’s temptations by remaining focused on his fidelity to the Father. What temptations are you willing to confront during the season of Lent? LENTEN REGULATIONS

Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is sinful.

Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. Therefore, all of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial. All Catholics are encouraged to support generously the charitable works of the whole Church, pray and perform works of charity and mercy.

Those who are sick, pregnant, or nursing, or whose health would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence, should not consider themselves bound by these norms.

A Prayer For Our Church

Heavenly Father, in every age, you have been our refuge. Yet again and still, we stand before you asking for your protection on your Holy Church. We place our Church in your hands, for without you we can do nothing. May Jesus, our High Priest and true compass, continue to lead her in every thought and action to be an instrument of justice, a source of consolation, a sacrament of unity, and a manifestation of your faithful covenant. For the victims of abuse and their families, pour out your healing and your peace. For the leaders of your Church, pour out your Spirit to guide them and inspire their decisions. For those who have followed your call to serve you and your people in holiness, sustain them by your grace. For all the faithful who are searching for answers, embrace them with your love, restore their trust, console them with your clear Gospel message, and renew them with your sacraments. We ask this in the name of your Son and our Brother, and through the Holy Spirit, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.

Father in heaven, you sent us your only Son to redeem us and to build your kingdom on earth. Please give us the wisdom and strength we need to follow His call. Grant to the faithful a spirit of generosity, that church vocations may flourish. Bless our priests with holiness and courage, that they may lead your people to Christ. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

DISCIPLES MAKING DISCIPLES

Blessings,

Susan Tutaj

“Jesus told us that the Kingdom of God was like a wedding banquet. (Matthew 22:1-14) The Eucharist is to be a foretaste of this banquet, and so it ought to produce an exclamation of “Wow!”

Prepare yourself to receive the gift of Jesus and then afterward, return to your pew, close your eyes and enjoy being in Christ’s presence...a time to talk to Jesus but to also LISTEN.

The 6 Characteristics of an Everyday Stewardship for Lent – Mindful

What is it that tempts you the most? Is it an action, a person, or a place? It is something that seems innocent enough, like a food, a drink, or an event? When you really start reflecting, you find that there are many temptations all around. Even if you are strong and never succumb to a certain temptation, it is still there waiting for a weak moment in your life.

One difficultly in the life of a disciple trying to live a stewardship way of life lies in the temptations we never actually see. We are too busy thinking about past failures or successes, or we are fixated on what possibilities the future holds that we miss the important things going on in the present. Jesus could be standing directly in front of us, but we miss him because we are looking everywhere except straight ahead.

Being mindful means that we are looking out for how and when God will call us this very day. Our decisions this day will have a huge impact on the future. If we only look to the future, we will miss those important calls to action. We may even find ourselves in a desert of sorts, looking for any way out we can find. However, God may need us to give of ourselves for a reason we cannot yet discern while in that desert. We need to stay awake, be aware, and look for His hand in all things. If we don’t, we may even miss the pathway out of that desert when it presents itself. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

Question: What is the Anointing of the Sick? Answer: In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising.

The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. GOSPEL MEDITATION:

Life can easily spin us out of control. While there are so many wonderful opportunities before us, we can also get easily distracted and exhausted. There is always something to do, respond to, or check. The clutter of our lives can take us off course, and the best remedy for getting back on track is the experience of the desert. Here we can face our demons square on, resist them, and get back on course. We desperately need the season of Lent. This simple time of year forces us into greater awareness and grounds us in what is good and true.

What weighs you down and keeps you trapped? Maybe you are trying to do too much and please too many people. It could be that your fragile self-image is always pushing you to prove yourself and find success. Anxiety and worry, ultimately due to a lack of faith, can quickly tempt you with despair. It could be that you are listening to too many voices and allowing all of the negativity that is present erode the genuine goodness in your heart and in all of God’s creation.

Or maybe you struggle too much with fear. Perhaps so much so that you are far too preoccupied with your own agenda and goals and left with little psychological or spiritual room to consider and respond to the plight of your neighbor. Do anger, bitterness, stubbornness, and hatred have homes in your heart? How about greed, gluttony, pride, apathy, or lust?

For many, their passions and what can be found on the internet are their downfall, and they are robbed of their inner life and freedom. What is it, specifically, that tempts you away from a childlike trust in God? Define this and use the next few weeks to allow God to chart you a course away from them. Silence, being alone, grace, honesty, struggle, tears, and dryness are all found in the desert. You will also find God and your true self in this holy place. Ready to go? ©LPi

LIVE THE LITURGY:

We desperately need the season of Lent. Have you ever found yourself running in all directions, tired, frustrated, and frazzled and yearning for the moment when you can stop, find some time for reflection and prayer, and get your head straight? Life pulls us in all directions. On top of that, the presence of sin in our lives gives us blurry vision and makes us forget who we really are. We can easily lose touch with God.

Lent gives us the opportunity to return to simpler times and clear away some of life’s clutter. We can change up our routines a bit and realize that Jesus is the one who can set us right with God and restore what was originally meant to be. Our task is to avoid the temptations that can weigh us down, distract us, and distort our vision. Are you aware of what things in your life do this to you? Over the next few weeks, you have an opportunity to avoid them. ©LPi

MEETING CHRIST IN PRAYER

Meeting Christ in Prayer is an opportunity to experience spiritual renewal through prayer. Each week is an

enriching prayer experience based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. You will be entering a welcoming,

trust filled environment where you can enjoy a new or familiar prayer experience.

We will begin on Wednesday, March 4, at 9:30 am in the Emmaus Room and 6:45 pm in the Koinonia Room

(enter door #20/Faith Formation) to ready ourselves for the Parish Mission. The series will break for the

Parish Mission and then follow-up the parish mission on March 18, 25, April 1 and 8.

Each 1 hour and 15 minute session will include prayer, faith-sharing and information.

Meeting Christ in Prayer will introduce you to a variety ways of praying and will help you to form regular

habits of prayer. Dare to join us to grow in your faith, put our parish mission into action and to know

transformation this Lent.

No prior experience in praying with others is needed. For more information or if you have questions,

please contact Susan: [email protected] or 630-860-2975 x32.

Did You Know?

Prayer is at the heart of our relationship with God. In our prayer life, we encounter the divine through the guidance of the Holy

Spirit. Prayer, in addition to the Sacrament of the Eucharist, is also one of the most powerful ways we meet Jesus and allow

Christ’s love to transform us. St. Ignatius of Loyola showed people how meditative prayer focused on the life of Christ leads to

greater freedom. Through prayer we listen to the Holy spirit and get in touch with our true desires, enabling us to more intention-

ally and effectively live the Christian life. We take this prayerful spirit out into the world, into all aspects of our lives.

(Meeting Christ in Prayer)

Taizé Prayer

Please join us for our Prayer Service in the way of

Taizé at Holy Ghost at 7 PM on Tuesday, March 3rd;

in conjunction with the Council of Catholic Women

Holy Hour on Tuesday, March 17th; on Tuesday,

March 24th, March 31st; and in preparation for the

culmination of Holy Week on April 7th. In this

reflective season of Lent, as we face the work and

hectic activities of our busy lives, come. Spend some

quiet time and enter into the contemplative rhythm

of this hour of prayer. Experience God’s word

proclaimed in song and prayer, quiet reflection,

and in singing the simple and beautiful chants and

responses of the Taizé Ecumenical Community in

France. This prayer centers our spirits by providing

a space to be still,

tune into the divine,

and pray for our world.

God is Young: A Conversation with Thomas Leoncini by Pope Francis

Pope Francis examines the role of millennials in the future of the Catholic Church in this urgent call to believers of all generations to work together to build a better world. In this extraordinary interview with journalist Thomas Leoncini, His Holiness reminds us that “God is young; He is always new.”

God has energy, spontaneity, and the desire for change—youthful qualities that can be rallied to fight the many problems facing the Catholic Church and the world at large.
