Reflections from David Gordon

Hello, my friends,

Father John asked me to share my thoughts and reflections about the ministry that I am involved with at our parish.

First, a brief introduction is likely in order. I am the president of the Pastoral Council here at Holy Family. The role of the council is to advise and consult with the Pastor to help him make decisions regarding pastoral issues. In general terms, we try to guide the vision of the parish so that we can all be better Catholics. In addition to this ministry I am also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a lector.

I have been a member of the Pastoral Council for about four years and find that the work we do is very rewarding. We are a group of twelve individuals with different experiences in life and range from high school aged young adults to people with children in high school, or older. It is these varied life experiences that allow us to blend our thoughts, ideas, passions, and opinions to help guide the Pastor. He is our spiritual leader and while he has the help of Father Alfred and the Deacons, the church and the parish are his responsibility. Our hope and goal is to help Father John by sharing our life experiences and observations as parishioners.

The readings this week speak about Elijah being told to select Elisha as his future replacement, and about the freedom of the Spirit of Christ and loving thy neighbor. The Gospel also speaks about Jesus traveling from village to village and a young disciple who was eager to serve Christ. I am certainly none of these. I am but a lay person who has been given the opportunity to help keep our parish, and perhaps the world’s Church, more alive and vibrant. This takes a great amount of consideration, thought, and prayer because there are so many people in our parish who rely on the Church for so much more than a place of worship.

I believe that a church should be much more for us than a place of worship and Holy Family is such a place. But to maintain the parish as such a wonderful home for our soul it takes a lot of work. By a lot of people.

Being a member of the Pastoral Council I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet some amazing people who truly love thy neighbor and gladly give their time to help with this ministry. This is a rewarding ministry because the guidance and discussions we have can help not just our parish, but the Church of our neighbors.

House of Charity/Bishop’s Annual Appeal Called to Mercy Campaign We are nearing this year’s parish goal of $196,554 but we still need your help to reach this goal. We know that contributing to the House of Charity requires a sacrifice on your part and we ask that you prayerfully consider contributing to this worthwhile campaign if you have not yet done so.

St. Peter and St. Paul are two of the most well known saints, and are often spoken of as the two men most responsible for spreading the Christian message in the days of the early church.

As to why they are celebrated on the same day, legend has it that they were executed on the same day under the command of the Emperor Nero and buried in Rome. (Although historical accounts cite Peter being martyred in 64 AD and Paul in 67 AD.)

Because of his Roman citizenship, St. Paul was beheaded. St. Peter was reportedly crucified upside down because he said he was not worthy to be sacrificed in the same manner as Christ.

On June 29 the Church celebrates the feast day of both men, and as early as 258 AD, there is evidence of an already-lengthy tradition that both St. Peter and St. Paul were celebrated on the same day.

every Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We also have Nocturnal Adoration every First

Friday of the month beginning after the 7:00

p.m. evening Mass continuing throughout

the night until the following morning at 9:00 a.m.

We encourage you to find some quiet time with our Lord and

adore Him in the Most Blessed Sacrament. If you are interested

You don’t have to miss Mass while you’re on vacation! For many families, summer vacations or weekend trips to the shore and mountains take us away from home. A liturgy and graduation ceremony was held at our parish on June 4 to celebrate the graduation of Our Lady of Hope Regional School’s 8th grade class of 2016. Presiding at this celebration were Rev. John Picinic, Rev. Mark Cavagnaro, Rev. Stephen Rapposelli, and Deacon Jerry Jablonowski.

Of the 35 students in this year’s 8th grade class, six were members of our parish—Luke John Malloy, Jalen William Oakes, Michael Ryan Montgomery, Justin Paul Bakely, John Curtis Parker, Caitlin Mary Van Es. We are proud of all of the students and wish them good luck and God’s blessings as they begin the next phase of their academic journey.

A “thank you” goes out to all who were present at the OWLS End-of-Year Luncheon—veteran members and new attendees alike!

We look forward to beginning a new season in September. Watch this bulletin for information on our meetings which are scheduled every third Tuesday of the month.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

An old and still vital treasure in our tradition is a document called the “Apostolic Traditions,” giving us a snapshot of church life in third-century Rome. Its author, Hippolytus, describes the liturgical life of the church and records the actual texts of the prayers. The way he explained the various “orders” of the church was the basis for a major reform of the rites of ordination by Pope Pius XII in 1947, and later for the Second Vatican Council. Hippolytus tells us that a bishop had to be elected by the entire people, and that ordination had to take place on a Sunday in the presence of the people, the presbyters, and neighboring bishops. The bishop-candidate is ordained by the other bishops, who impose their hands on his head while everyone else keeps a profound silence, awaiting the outpouring of the Spirit. There is a prayer of blessing said by one of them, on behalf of all, asking for the Spirit and describing his ministry. Later centuries layered new features on top of this liturgy, including the requirement for three bishop consecrators. Today, whenever a new bishop is announced (election by the people is no more), a kind of genealogy is provided, tracing his pedigree through the consecrating bishops down through the centuries to Peter and the first body of believers. Every bishop today can trace his office through his consecrators back to the beginning in a tradition called “apostolic succession.”
