Page 2 THE ACTS

We’ve talked about Treasure and Influence.

This month we’re talking about Trust.

“Trust” has a variety of meanings in

the context of stewardship. We are

trustees of God’s gifts to us, and He

becomes trustee of all we turn over to

Him. Contemporary author Donald

Miller illustrates the relationship be-

tween trust and treasure in his 2009 book ti-

tled, Blue Like Jazz: Nonreligious Thoughts

on Christian Spirituality. In the book, Miller

describes his own conversion experience relat-

ing to his finances and trust when he was lec-

tured on the subject of tithing by his good

friend, Curt. (Miller describes Curt as “not

even a church sort of guy” who worked all day

at a cabinet shop and likely read nothing more

intellectual than Bikes and Babes magazine).

Curt kept a jar on his dresser full of cash –

Miller guessed it held thousands of dollars.

Curt was complaining one night that the cabi-

net shop didn’t pay him enough to buy a mo-

torcycle he wanted, so Miller suggested Curt

use the money from the jar. Curt said that he

couldn’t use that money because it wasn’t his,

it belonged to God. Curt had been taking ten

percent of every paycheck he earned and put-

ting that cash in that jar. Curt asked Miller if

he tithed, and when Miller replied that he did

not, Curt said, “It’s a Shame, Don. You are

missing out.”

Miller later approached the topic of tithing

with his good friend and pastor, Rick. Miller

felt the need to confess that he was not giving

any money to the church, and when Rick

asked Miller why not, Miller apologized that

he did not have any money left after rent and

groceries. Rick didn’t let Miller off the hook.

The following dialogue sums it up:

Rick: “Part of the benefit of giving a portion

of your money is it makes you think

about where your money goes. God

does not want us to be sloppy with our

finances, Don.”

Miller: “But I need money for rent.”

Rick: “You also need to trust God.”

Miller: “I know. I just think it would be easier

to trust God if I had extra money to

trust Him with.”

Rick: “That would not be faith, then, would

it?”

Miller: “No.”

Rick: “Well, bud, I just want you to know I

hate this part of the job, ‘cause it

sounds like I am asking for your mon-

ey. I don’t care whether or not we have

your money. Our needs are met. I want

to tell you that you are missing out on

so much, Don.”

Miller: “So much what?”

Rick: “The fruit of obedience…. When we

do what God wants us to do, we are

blessed, we are spiritually healthy. God

wants us to give a portion of our mon-

ey to His work on earth. By setting

aside money from every check, you are

trusting God to provide. He wants you

to get over that fear – that fear of

trusting Him.”

Miller has been giving at least ten percent of

every dollar he makes to the church since then

and says he has never been short on rent. Sud-

denly, he had money to spare. And his rela-

tionship with God grew.

Rick and Curt both described proportional

giving as a blessing, not a burden. When we

make regular deposits into a Trust account

managed by the One and Only, our relation-

ship with God will grow with interest com-

pounded.

ties and how they influence

the public discourse.

Peters, Head of School at St.

George's Independent School

Reading with the Rector October 18th

The Reading with the Rector

selection for October is the

New York Times Bestseller,

Everything I Never Told You

by Celeste Ng. We will meet

to discuss this book on Tues-

day, October 18th at 6:30 p.m.

in the conference room.

Come for discussion or just

to listen and enjoy snacks.

Everything I Never Told You

is the story of a Chinese

American family living in

1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia

is the favorite child of Marilyn

and James Lee, and her par-

ents are determined that she

will fulfill the dreams they

were unable to pursue. But

when Lydia’s body is found in

the local lake, the delicate

balancing act that has been

keeping the Lee family to-

gether is destroyed, tumbling

them into chaos. It is a pro-

foundly moving story of fami-

ly, secrets, and longing.

Invite, Welcome, Connect by Tiffany Siegel

When I attended the Invite

Welcome Connect Summit at

Camp Allen in Texas back in

April, I met representatives

from Episcopal churches all

over the country, learned a lot

about the concepts of Invite

Welcome Connect and what

others are doing to make it

real in their parishes. I also

learned that there is a lot that

Holy Apostles is already do-

ing very well and we have

reason to be proud. As with

everything in life, however,

there is always opportunity

for change, growth and im-

provement.

Since Mary Foster Parmer

first visited last year, commit-

tees formed to review the

thoughts and ideas generated

by her presentation, then I

took their recommendations

and merged them with what I

learned at the Summit. The

resulting proposal for imple-

mentation was reviewed by

the Vestry and approved. Fol-

lowing approval, a smaller

core committee was recruited

to oversee plans and tackle

action items.

Our goal is to claim this im-

portant initiative and inten-

tionally grow our membership

and ministry. We are already

known as a warm, welcoming

place to worship and taking

this next step will allow us to

share more of what we have

to offer with others in our

community and beyond.

How can I help, you ask?

We all need to think of this as

a cultural shift and everyone

in our church community

should work to keep Invite

Welcome Connect top of

mind.

INVITE others to visit Holy

Apostles. Let them know that

we are a place where they are

Prime Timers are off to the Memphis Zoo October 11th

When was the last time you

visited the Memphis Zoo? If it

has been awhile, you have an

opportunity on Tuesday, Octo-

ber 11th to join church friends

for a leisurely stroll through

the zoo on what we hope will

be a beautiful autumn day. We

will start with lunch at the ever

-popular Elwood's Shack (4523

Summer Ave., Memphis),

where you can dine on deli

sandwiches, tacos and/or

smoked BBQ. It is “no-frills

joint serving” so be prepared

for takeout and eating at a pic-

nic table outdoors. At the zoo,

that is home to more than

3,500 animals, we can visit the

newest exhibit, Zambezi River

Hippo Camp, featuring an un-

derwater area for hippos, croc-

odiles and God's other delight-

ful creatures.

attending via the Sign Up Ge-

welcomed, loved and accept-

ed. God wants us to speak to

one another and connect to

the people beyond the bound-

aries of our community. Share

the joy you feel in your life

here and ask others to be a

part of it. Listen to their story

and share yours.

To help with invitation, we

have created Holy Apostles

“business cards” that give in-

formation about the church

and our service schedule. You

can pick them up at one of the

usher tables or in the church

office. Keep a few in your

purse, wallet or pocket. You

never know when you might

want to use one!

WELCOME visitors to this

wonderful place. It’s not just a

job for the ushers… everyone

at Holy Apostles is responsible

for welcoming. We need to

open not only our doors, but

also our hearts and our lives to

others seeking Christ. After

all, we invited them here (see

above) and the Holy Spirit

brought them to our door!

This sometimes means going

out of our comfort zone and

resisting the urge to gravitate

to the people that we already

know. Our biggest fear may be

that we feel we should already

know them… what if they are

not ‘new’ you say? We are a

large enough church, however,

that it is impossible for every-

one to know everyone else.

Just start by saying, “It’s good

to see you. I’m not sure we’ve

met before. My name is… “.

The rest is easy!
