THE NARROW GATE

Jesus tells us: “Strive to enter through the narrow gate” to get into heaven. A good question is: “How narrow is that gate?”

Gallop poll showed that 81% of Americans believe in heaven. This includes churchgoers and non-churchgoers, believers in God and non-believers. For churchgoers, 98% of Americans

believe in heaven. Of the believers, 85% were sure they were going to heaven when they die. The believers include, however, people who practice their faith and live Christian morals, and those who do not.

The first two questions of such a poll seemed to have been answered quite easily: Do you believe in heaven? And, where do you think you are going when you die? But, a third question puzzled many of those who were sure they were going to heaven. The question: Why do you think you are going to heaven?

Even though a majority believed they were going to heaven, they didn’t know why or how. Some wondered, why is that important anyway?

What if your neighbor said: “I’m going to Mars,” and you asked, “how?”—and he replied, “I don’t know.” What would you think? You might say to him: “You better know how if you plan on going there and want to get there.”

So many people simply assume or presume that they are going to heaven when they die—because they are “Catholic” or are “good people.” Then, what is this “narrow gate” that Jesus is talking about?

Jesus is the Gate through which all must enter eternal life. The way to eternal life is restricted to just one avenue—Jesus Christ. In this sense, the way is narrow because it is the only way, and relatively few people will go through the narrow gate. Many more will attempt to find an alternative route to God. They will try to get there through manmade rules and regulations, or through self-effort, or going along with what culture dictates. These “many” will follow the broad road that leads to eternal destruction, while the sheep who hear the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow Him along the narrow way will enter eternal life (John 10:7-11).

Following Jesus is more than calling yourself “Christian,” or “Catholic,” or a “good person.” Following Jesus means being obedient to Him—to His Gospel message and to His Church. Being baptized and being a good person does not necessarily mean you are following Jesus Christ in your everyday life, and therefore you may be avoiding the “narrow gate.” Entering the narrow gate means obedience to Jesus Christ.

The gate to heaven is “narrow” in the sense of having a particular requirement for entrance—faith in Jesus Christ, and living that faith. How well are you passing through the narrow gate? Fr. Dave

MEDITATION

What a depth of thought that unreels from the words of Psalm 33: Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we have hoped in You (Ps. 33:22)…. Indeed, someone might in-quire: “How far can we count on God’s mercy?” For alt-hough in itself it is infinite and limitless, yet we, as created beings, can partake of it only in a limited, finite way. The above-quoted words of David…provide us with an answer:

Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us according to the meas-ure of our hope in you. In other words, the amount of mer-cy obtained by us from God corresponds to the greatness of our hope in him. The more we trust in God, the more abundantly shall we draw from the treasures of his mercy. The measure is, therefore, in our own hands since it de-pends on the hope we have in the Lord.

If we remind God of our hope, we can obtain from him ever more and more. God wishes us to appeal to him with confi-dence because such a confession of faith and hope in his mercy is an unending hymn of praise of his infinite perfec-tion. Saint John of the Cross remembered this well, saying that God never refused him any grace when he implored him with the words of Psalm 119, Be you mindful of your word to your servant: in which you have given me hope (Ps. 119:49). Is that “Word of God” anything other than his mercy revealed to us?

FAMILY FORMATION A Whole Family Approach to

Learning and Living the Catholic Faith

The Family Formation Program at Holy Cross serves families with children in Grades K-6. Families are support-ed and encouraged in their efforts to pray, worship, and grow in faith together as a Catholic family.

For families whose children are not enrolled in a Catholic school, Family Formation fulfills the need for religious education and sacramental preparation. However, all families with children in Grades K-6 are invited to come and be part of the Family Formation community.

For more information or if you would like to register for this year, please contact Cindy Howie at 352-8748. Deadline extended to Monday, August 22nd.

1ST, 2ND, AND 3RD YEAR CONFIRMATION CLASSES

Confirmation preparation classes for students attending public schools begin in September. Confirmation prepar-ation is a 3-year cycle that typically begins with monthly classes in 6th and 7th grade, and continues with weekly classes for 8th grade.

Registration forms can be sent to you, or pick one up at the Parish Office. Please return them to the Office by Monday, August 22nd. Questions? Call the Parish Office at 352-8748.

CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

THE CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is offered for pre-school children and is available at Holy Cross. It is an ap-proach to the religious formation of children that is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the Church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. The children come to an ’atrium’ where they are given the opportunity to inde-pendently discover the beauty of the Catholic faith and their role as part of the body of Christ.

If you would like your preschooler to participate in this ex-ceptional program, please call Cindy Howie at 352-8748.

WANT TO JOIN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?

If you, or someone you know, want to become Catholic, now’s the time to make that call! Classes are for:

Non-Catholics who know they want to join or who may be interested but need more information;

Catholics who have never received the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation;

Married couples of mixed religious faiths who wish to unite their religious practice in Catholicism.

Please contact Cindy Howie at 352-8748 for more details.

THE REASON FOR OUR FEAST WEEK

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in celebrated on September 14th. This is the day we celebrate our church recalling three events: (1) The finding of the True Cross by St. Helena; (2) the dedication of the churches built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary; and (3) the restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem.

In a deeper sense, the feast celebrates the Holy Cross as an instrument of our salva-tion. This instrument of torture, designed to degrade the worst of criminals, became the life-giving tree that reversed Adam's original sin. There is reason to CELEBRATE!

Please join your parish family during the week of Sunday, Sept. 11th-17th, for various programs and events to praise God for his Son and our parish family. Always home, always family! More details to follow in next week’s bulletin.

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is inspired by Gospel values and leads men and women to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person

service to the needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederick Ozanam, and its patron, St. Vincent de Paul.

The Holy Cross/St. Matthew Conference is blessed by the generosity of our parishioners who make this outreach possible. Your collective food and financial contributions enabled us to assist 131 adults and 197 children in Cham-paign in July.

Please continue your support and keep the members of St. Vincent de Paul Society and those they help in your prayers. Our donation poor box is in the vestibule of the Church.

For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. . .” ~ Matthew 25: 34-46
