Church of the Ascension of the Lord Balally Parish Second Sunday of Christmas 5th January 2020 The Deep End: World Became Flesh: Today we hear the beautiful prologue to Johns Gospel. It would be worth finding the time to meditate on these verses during the week. They are beautifully rich. In the beginning was the Wordin Greek, log- os. This logos (Word) has far more meaning than its English translation can give. It refers to all-knowledge; all-being; that which is forever; the Word that is Divine, Creator of the universe, Being, God, Father and Mother of all things. We read in this prologue that not one thing came to be without God. Do we really see God at the centre of all things? In our environ- ment, in nature, in all created beings? Science tells us our universe is 13.8 billion years old. We cannot even conceive of such a time scale. John tells us of God at that point, at that great flaring forth of all creation, when everything came to be. This Word was with God at that moment and was God. If we truly believe in the Incarnation, let us be alert and awake to the In- carnation of God every day in our lives; Christ present in all people, in every created thing, for God is fully at work in crea- tion at every stage, then, now and forever. For creation and incarnation are not different events, but the same event, the same process. God is always incarnate, always bound to the world as its lover, as close to it, as we are to our own bodies, and concerned before all else to see that the body, Gods world, flourishes.Sallie McFague Jane Mellett: [email protected] Parish Office Open Hours: Tuesday to Friday 10.30am – 12.30pm. Second Sunday of Christmas 5th January 2020

The Deep End: World Became Flesh: Today we hear the beautiful prologue to John’s Gospel. It would be worth finding the time to meditate on these verses during the week. They are beautifully rich. ‘In the beginning was the Word…’ in Greek, log-os. In our environ-ment, in nature, in all created beings? Science tells us our universe is 13.8 billion years old. We cannot even conceive of such a time scale. John tells us of God at that point, at that great flaring forth of all creation, when everything came to be. This Word was with God at that moment and was God. If we truly believe in the Incarnation, let us be alert and awake to the In-carnation of God every day in our lives; Christ present in all people, in every created thing, for God is fully at work in crea-tion at every stage, then, now and forever. For creation and incarnation are not different events, but the same event, the same process. ‘God is always incarnate, always bound to the world as its lover, as close to it, as we are to our own bodies, and concerned before all else to see that the body, God’s world, flourishes.’ Sallie McFague

Christ, The Wisdom of God

“He came to his own domain and his own people did not accept him.” In the presence of the Christmas Crib and conscious of the stable Christ was born in, we can so easily hear that sentence and stand in judgement on the people of the past. But we need to let it speak to us about ourselves. We are now the people Christ lives among. What difference does that make in our lives? To accept him means to be on fire with all that he stands for in humanity’s rela-tionship with God and with the world we live in. It is to take seriously our call to love in marriage and in family life in ways that radiate God to the world. It means building our parish community so that every person is cared for and where each one is valued and treasured. It means being a people who are part of the transformation of the world into the Kingdom of God. That is again the challenge of faith during this

Christmas time. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

A Prayer for the New Year

Lord, whether I leave behind a year of joy or of trials and difficulties, I pause to give thanks. Thank you for making all things new and for giving me the grace of fresh starts and new beginnings. Remind me of your presence in the days to come, even when I feel pushed and rushed by busyness. Be glorified in my life this year. Amen
