Saint of the Week
St. Anthony of Padua, Feastday: June 13
Saint Anthony of Padua, born Fernando Martins de Bul-
hões, also known as Anthony of Lisbon, was a Portuguese
Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order. He was
born and raised by a wealthy family in Lisbon, Portugal,
and died in Padua, Italy.
Llama-
do "Doctor Evangélico".
(www.ewtn.com)
The Most Holy Trinity - Year of Matthew (A)- June 11, 2017
The Holy Trinity - (June 11, MMXVII) The feast of the Holy Trinity is the one major celebration in
the liturgical year that has its focus on a doctrine or teaching.
The word ‘Trinity’ is not in the Bible, nor the word ‘Triune.’
But, the teaching or revelation from God is very much there,
and we have to call it something. Tertullian, a brilliant 3rd cen-
tury theologian from Alexandria, Egypt was the first to coin
the word 'Trinity'.
De Trinitate, ‘On the Trinity’ is perhaps the most difficult
work that the great St Augustine ever wrote. We are also told
that St Patrick used the shamrock, to explain the Holy Trinity.
In other words, start to use your imagination - because words
fail us, when we try to explain, the nature of God. The doc-
trine of the Trinity is the unique way that Christianity talks
about God – it’s our very particular route map that we need to
have some familiarity with so that this special experience of
who God is can be shared with others.
The feast of the Holy Trinity deals with the nature of God:
who is He, what is He like? That, by definition has to remain
a mystery.
There‘s an ancient Hindu Sanskrit description of God - and the
phrase is ‘niti niti’. It can be literally translated as ‘not this,
not that’. That’s to say, whatever we can say or think of God,
he’s not that. He is beyond neat definitions.
A text precious to the Jews, which we can even call their creed
is the ‘shema Israel’ - from Dt 6 “Hear, O Israel: the LORD
our God, the LORD is One,”
And this creed is also precious to us. God is One. But at the
heart of the Christian faith is a further precious truth: there are
relationships within this One God, relationships between the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The God who is abso-lutely One, has revealed himself as 3 persons. In John 16 Jesus
says - ‘I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot
bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide
you into all the truth. And ‘all that the Father has is mine’.
Whereas in the Western tradition of the church we have tended
to depict the Trinity as a triangle, the Eastern Church has al-
ways preferred a circle. The Trinity is like an ever-moving
circle of dance in which the 3 persons constantly and forever
move in and through one another in perfect bliss and harmony.
Greek theologians called it ‘perichoresis’, which means ‘to
dance around'. It’s the Divine Dance of the persons of the
Trinity. Perichoresis refers to the divine choreography by
which the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit have from all
eternity engaged in a Divine Dance of life.
St John of Damascus, an early Christian theologian, who was
influential in developing the doctrine of the ‘perichoresis’,
described it as a ‘cleaving together’. Such is the fellowship in
the Godhead that the Father, the Son & the Holy Spirit, not
only embrace each other, but they also enter into each other,
permeate each other, and dwell in each other.
There’s a profound biblical basis for this understanding - be-
cause Jesus says in John’s gospel, ‘all that I have is yours and
all you have is mine’. Elsewhere in John, he says, ‘the Father
and I are one’.
To that one God, the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit be all
honor and glory now and for eternity. Amen
