Sunday of Lent Laetare ‘Rejoice’ Sunday
Mass for the Forgiveness of Sins
In this ‘Year of Faith’ I’m explaining the revised Roman Missal orations that were not on a Sunday last year.
May our reflections on these theologically rich, deeply beautiful Mass orations, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts, help us grow in our Catholic FAITH!
For the Forgiveness of Sins - Collect
Graciously hear the prayers of those who call upon you, we ask, O Lord, and forgive the sins of
those who confess to you, granting us in your kindness both pardon and peace.
Or:
Be merciful to your people, O Lord, and absolve them from all sins,
so that what we deserve by our offenses may be avoided by your pardon.
All Have Sinned. As the humorous cartoon above notes, even Priests are sinners and must go to Confession for absolution, for we cannot forgive ourselves! [And children DO say the funniest things in Confession; one time a child scanned the reconciliation room and then asked “Are you sure no one else will hear what I say?”] However, sin and its cancerous side effects are no laughing matter, for they destroy our peace of mind, poison our relationship with God and one another, weaken our resolve to live in grace and make us doubt our God-given goodness!
I entitled this section “All Have Sinned” which comes from Romans 3:23-24:“all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. [But] they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus.” For while Saint Paul justly condemns us as imperfect sinners, he also recalls the perfect remedy: Christ’s free gift of grace! In the Catholic understanding of how God works, we must use our senses to repent and to celebrate God’s pardon and peace; ergo, the Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation! So come to our Penance Service a week from this Monday, March 18, to confess your sins and hear the beautiful words of absolution.
For the Forgiveness of Sins - Prayer over the Offerings
We offer you, O Lord, the sacrifice of conciliation and praise, that, being moved to compassion,
you may both pardon our offenses and direct our wavering hearts.
God Makes the First Move. Some say today’s Gospel of the Prodigal Son should be called the Forgiving Father, for the father keeps vigil for his wayward son’s return and then lavishes his forgiveness on him! Yet there are so many people - far too many people - who sadly choose NOT to come home to receive their Father’s loving embrace in the Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation! For the Priest who awaits them in the Confessional is not there to judge but to bring God’s pardon and peace; he is not there to condemn but to redirect the wayward; he is not there to scold or ridicule but to affirm and assure repentant sinners that the forgiveness they seek is, indeed, God’s gracious gift to them!
What must we say and do to make a ‘good confession?’ We start with our state in life [I’m married, single, etc.] and the approximate time of our last confession. We then list all serious, grave or mortal sins by number and kind; a general admission suffices for all lesser, venial sins: self-centeredness, impatience, intolerance, etc. As the doctor of our soul, the Priest may prescribe a penance [a prayer or pious act that redirects us to a better life] after which he prays the Prayer of Absolution. The Act of Contrition is prayed by all during the service from a printed program … so don’t let not knowing what to say or do keep you away! Come and be reconciled!
For the Forgiveness of Sins - Prayer after Communion
Grant us, merciful God, that, receiving in this gift the forgiveness of sins, we may be able
by your grace to avoid sinning from now on and to serve you in sincerity of heart.
God’s Gift of Forgiveness. As this oration makes clear, God’s pardon and peace come to us through His gift. In the context of holy Mass, for which this prayer was written, God’s forgiveness comes through the gift of Christ’s Sacred Body, which was offered up for us, and His Precious Blood, which was poured out to forgive sins. But those guilty of mortal sin must first receive God’s gift of mercy in Confession. And ALL are strongly encouraged to confess at least once a year, even if they have no mortal sins, so as to stay in God’s good graces! Will you come to enjoy God’s gift of forgiveness in Confession?
With God’s love and my prayers,
Reverend Michael J. Kreder

Both need your sacrificial support. We are asking EACH FAMILY to make a financialcommitment to our AAA. PALM SUNDAY
In 2 weeks, we celebrate Palm Sunday. All
children through Grade 5 will be asked to come
to the Sanctuary Space in church before the
Mass begins so that when the procession begins,
these children can be part of our parade. They
will then be brought downsta irs to
Madonna/Rosary Rooms where the Hanna-
Barbera’s Easter Story video will be viewed.
This animated re-creation of “The Easter Story”
brings to life all the wonder and glory of what many have called
“the greatest story ever told.”
FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
First Reading: Joshua 5:9a, 10-12
Joshua and the Israelites celebrated Passover in Jericho. This
was the first time they had eaten the produce of the promised
land. After this, there was no more bread sent from heaven
because they were able to eat the yield of the land.
Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Paul tells us that anyone living in Jesus is a new creation
because God has reconciled with us through Christ. As an
ambassador for Jesus, Paul implores that the Corinthians be
reconciled to God through Jesus.
Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32
The Pharisees grew disgusted with Jesus because of his
compassion toward sinners. So Jesus told them a story of a son
who squandered his inheritance. When a famine broke out, he
returned home and asked his father to become a hired hand. His
father instead welcomed him with a joyful celebration, just as
God is overjoyed when a sinner returns to him.

PARISH PENANCE SERVICE
Monday, March 18 at 7:30
As Saint John Vianney taught, one of our greatest
treasures is Penance or Reconciliation aka
“Confession” - which is only one part of this
Sacrament of Healing. Catholics MUST confess
all mortal, grave serious sins as soon as possible and should not
receive Holy Communion until doing so. Confession is one of the
best Lenten exercises and is encouraged before major events like
Christmas, a family baptism, first communion or wedding, or
serving as a sponsor or godparent. Join us on Monday, March
18 . Several priests will be available for confessions. There areth
NO Confessions during the Sacred Triduum.
ALTAR SERVERS
We are looking for the return of OLDER SERVERS of High
School age through 29 to assist with our Triduum Masses and
services. If you were an Altar Server and would like to share your
time during the Sacred Triduum, please call the Parish Office.
Think quickly! Scripts are prepared for print! ALL CURRENT
SERVERS are asked to put time aside and be available for the
MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER on THURSDAY, MARCH
28 at 7:30pm as well as Good Friday (3pm) and the Easter Vigil
at 7:30pm. There will be a rehearsal for Holy Thursday - time to
be announced in a future bulletin.

SECOND COLLECTION
Peter’s Pence
THIS week, as a parish, we will participate in the Peter’s Pence
Collection for the Works of the Holy Father. This collection
enables the Holy Father to respond to requests for emergency
funds from the most needy throughout the world. The gospel
continually challenges us to lend a helping hand to those in need,
to help build a better world with justice for all. This special
Collection is an opportunity to demonstrate justice as well as
kindness to our brothers and sisters in need. Please pray for the
Holy Father’s works and contribute generously to the appeal.
RCIA - 12:00 noon Mass
The ‘Laying on of Hands’ - the ancient sign of the most solemn
blessing - is a passing on of power and a freeing from all that is
harmful. With hands extended in prayer, all are invited to join
in the prayers that our Elect and Candidates be freed from the
false powers of the world - and filled with the power of Christ,
by extending their right hand toward them in a gesture of
blessing and by reciting the prayer which should be found in the
front cover of your missalettes.
MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
Holy Thursday, March 28, 2013 - 7:30 p.m.
If you would like to participate in this most humbling
experience and have your feet washed during the Mass of the
Lord’s Supper, kindly call the Parish Office and give your
name and telephone number. Volunteers are asked to arrive at
Mass by 7:00 p.m. and look for Linda Verdino in the Narthex
for instructions and stations.
