2nd Sunday of Advent Saint Mark Church December 8, 2013

Pastor’s Corner

On this 2nd Sunday of Advent we are a little closer to Christmas. There will be many events happening in the days ahead here at St. Mark’s to which you are invited, namely: December 12th: Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe 7pm Mass with Mariachi Music. Reception in hall to follow. December 15th: Filipino celebration of “Simbang Gabi” at the 5:30pm Mass. Reception in hall to follow. December 16th: Advent Penance Service. 7:00pm. December 21st: Christmas Concert 7:00pm Please mark your calendars. You have been officially invited to all of these celebrations. A couple of weeks ago I concluded my “State of the Par-ish” address with the announcement that my term as your Pastor would be coming to an conclusion at the end of June 2014. Even though I had already made it know to numerous parishioners some were “shocked, saddened and disappointed” by this announcement and left with many questions. I will try to answer your questions now. Shortly after Cardinal Mahony became the Archbishop in 1985, upon the recommendation of the Priest Council, he imple-mented the policy that new Pastors would be given terms. A pastor is given a term of 6 years with a possible second term of 6 years. I am completing my second term of 6 years and thus I am termed out after 12 years. At the conclusion of 12 years, and if the pastor is under 65 years of age (I am under 65 years of age thank you very much), then he must move. A pastor over 65 years of age is allowed to remain pastor until he retires at age 75. I must now go through the Archdiocesan process for a new assignment. Presently all priests who are termed out, priests who might wish to become a pastor, pastors who simply wish to go to a different parish will shortly be receiving a list of “Parish Openings.” There will also be parishes listed where the present pastor is retiring. Once the list has been posted all interested priests, including myself, will review that list and then request profiles of parishes where we might be interested in becoming the pastor of that community. We are allowed to submit 3 preferences to the Priest Personnel Board. Prior to making a decision representatives from the Priest Personnel Board will hold a “hearing” in the parish that will be receiving a new pastor. The purpose of the hearing is to allow parishioners to express their hopes and needs for their parish and the parish’s future pastor. The hearing is not to complain about the old pastor. In the past Personnel Board members have stated that most parishioners are practically asking for Jesus to be their new pastor. I am presently waiting for the list of available parishes to be posted where there is an opening for a new pastor. The process is challenging and emotional. It is not easy to leave a community where you have shared in the lives of people for many years. It was difficult enough to leave my former assignments where I had been the Associate Pastor. I am not looking forward to the day I will have to leave my first assignment as a Pastor, namely, St. Mark’s. Please pray for me.

FROM OUR PASTOR

SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN

PROTEGIENDO A LOS NINOS

Ensure a safe road trip this holiday Taking the kids on a road trip to visit relatives and friends is a holiday tradition for many of us. Here are two tips that can help you get there and back as safely as possible:

1. Ensure that all occupants of any vehicle are properly se-cured and that there are no large or heavy items in the vehicle that may injure the occupants at any sudden stops.

2. A single parent travelling with children should ensure that permission from the other parent is readily available for au-thorities (this is to prevent one-parent abductions). This is especially important for air/train or cross border travel.

For particular help you may call Suzanne Healy, director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650 or Helene Hickey at 310-821-6612.

ST. MARK SCHOOL
