ORDER OF WORSHIP THE PRAYER & DEVOTION PERIOD IBC DEACONS THE CALL TO WORSHIP THE OPENING SENTENCES Responsive Reading Leader: But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria,

and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Congregation: And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Leader: And for their sakes I sanctify myself that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Congregation: Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; Leader: That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. Congregation: Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. Leader: As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. Congregation: And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. Leader: So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. All: And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they had also John to their minister.

Dedicating his life to sharpening the spiritual aptitude and expanding the theological proclivity of some of the nation's most accomplished pastors, preachers and teachers, The Reverend Dr. Aaron L. Parker is most appropriately described not as a preacher, but as an educator who answered the divine call to preach.

A young, serious professor and preacher, Rev. Dr. Aaron L. Parker, was installed as Pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church in 1994. Having served as the church's former Youth Minister, he had both a heart for the people and a vision for the church's future. Within his first year as pastor of the historical church, God led the Mississippi preacher to hit the ground running, establishing the Care to Love Outreach Ministry, implementing four new music ministries including the Voices of Oluwa and Azizi Children’s Choir, establishing the now

nationally-recognized Rites of Passage Program for youth ages 13-18 and designating what would be the church's declarative creed, "Living to Love and Loving to Serve". The following years resulted in history-making ministry after ministry to include more than 50 ministries designed to impact the world! Now, with a rapidly growing congregation of over 4,000 members, Dr. Parker is leading the church to deepen its focus on service to the community through the church's expansive outreach ministries and its support of the Zion Hill Community Development Corporation, a non-profit organization devoted to spiritual, economic, and educational enhancement of those in need. Dr. Parker is the visionary and shepherd of Zion Hill's "Rock Project," a $20 million building program that completed first of three phases in December of 2010 and relocated Zion Hill from the historical Southwest Atlanta community to a 43.5-acre site in South Fulton County at 6175 Campbellton Road. In addition to serving as Pastor of Zion Hill, Dr. Parker is currently an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Morehouse College, where he has spent over 30 years molding and shaping daring youth into Morehouse Men. He is the author of several articles including "African Religion in African American Religion," "Revisiting the Concept of God in Light of the Thought of Henry Highland Garnet," "The Joy of Molding Morehouse Men," and "The African American Church: Major Role Player in the African American Struggle for Freedom." Prior to accepting the pastorate of Zion Hill, Dr. Parker served as Pastor of Butler Street Baptist Church, Adjunct Professor of Theology at the Interdenominational Theological Center, and Assistant to the Pastor of Grace Covenant Baptist Church. Doctor Parker is a member of the Concerned Black Clergy of Atlanta, the Society for the Study of Black Religion, the American Academy of Religion, among other leadership positions. The seventh of seven children born to the late Reverend P. F. Parker and the late Mrs. Amy C. Parker of Canton, Mississippi, Pastor Parker was a serious child who knew early that God had a plan for his life. At the age of eight he accepted Jesus Christ into his life at the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Canton, where his father served as pastor. At the age of eighteen, he heard and answered the call to minister. After completing elementary and secondary school in Canton, he attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received the Bachelor of Arts Degree, majoring in Philosophy and Religion. As a student at Morehouse, Doctor Parker received several academic awards, including induction into the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. He furthered his formal education at Emory University, earning the Master of Arts Degree in Religion and the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Systematic Theology. Dr. Parker is married to Shelia Smith Parker, his high school sweetheart, and they are the parents of two children, Aaron Larry Parker, Jr., Asha Parker Booth and a son-in-law, Rev. Paul Booth. They recently welcomed their first grandchild, Laila Marie Booth.

A Message from Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church Trustees Greetings, from the Board of Trustees for our 192nd year! We, the humble servants of God continue to strive to be good managers of these gifts to us, and to love each other as He commanded. Truly God has been with us these 190 years. This will be the 141st year at this location, Day Street & Curtis M. Cofield Corner; and today, as we celebrate our church’s anniversary, closer than breath we can feel His presence. Victoriously, we raise our voices giving thanks for our blessings, recollecting triumphs and tribulations in the years gone by. All praises be to God as we strive to reach new and greater heights. As faithful servants we can do all things through Christ who strengthen us. ~Phil 4:13 Always in His Service, The Trustees of Immanuel Darryle Boyd, Chairperson David Canton, Co-Chairperson

    An Attitude of Love

Life presents us with challenges that we must overcome, And sometimes all the detours can leave the senses numb.

Life is filled with stumbling blocks we pass along the way, But it can become a stepping stone when love comes into play.

Whenever there’s an obstacle that we must rise above,

It helps to overcome it with an attitude of love. For anger never solves a thing and stress will bring us down,

But love unlocks the doorway where hope and faith are found.

So many things divide us throughout the human race, but love unites the smiles on mankind’s face.

Love presents us with challenges that we must rise above, And, blessed is he who can maintain an attitude of love.

    ~Clay Harrison

Come and let me tell you a story about a church on the corner of Chapel and Day, where all the saints from Immanuel say . . . that Jesus is the way.

Each letter in the church’s name I will explain, tells the story in Jesus’ name.

I: Meaning Immanuel, signifying the birth of God’s only son to be born to a virgin as the righteous and holy one.

M: Meaning Manger, where he was placed when he was born and to some perhaps it was his royal throne.

M: Meaning Messiah, a name he was called as he walked the face of the earth preaching to crowds of people as they shouted and rejoiced.

A: Meaning Anointed, because he was God’s Appointed to do his holy will while he traveled through deserts, peaks and valleys and even climbed hills.

N: Meaning Noble, an upright man was he, a Nazarene starting a nation to receive God’s salvation.

U: Meaning Universal, because of the words in which he spoke unifying a nation never taking a vacation.

E: Meaning Everlasting, knowing that we can always lean on his arms even to eternity and beyond.

L: Meaning “Lord of Lords and King of Kings”, this hymn we will forever sing starting from the beginning to the end. As all our voices blend right in that he is “Lord of Lords and King of Kings”

    MEMORIAL October 2016 – October 2017

To Everything, There is a Season To everything on earth there is a season, a time for every purpose under the sun.

From the beginning of life’s journey to the finish, we run the race until our days are done.

There is a time for weeping and for laughter. A time for mourning and a time to dance.

Every favor, every blessing we’re receiving is a gift from God; it happens not by chance.

For our God, in never failing mercy, watches over us from day to dawning day.

In His Hands He holds life’s changing seasons, as time continues on without delay.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE IMMANUEL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH Historians John Rodgers and Curtis M. Cofield, II traced the history of The Immanuel Baptist Church to October 1825. Immanuel was once called Third Baptist because there were two other Baptist churches in New Haven at the time. The membership of this great church increased so much that a building was built in 1847. But the expenses and debt proved overwhelming. In 1849, a building located on Park Street was advertised for sale. Deacon Nathaniel Harris sold a house in New York City and loaned the church $1,000.00. Deacon Harris died suddenly of a heart attack in 1851, never collecting any of his money. After his death, the church was given two more years to pay for its building. As the settlement of the Harris Estate could no longer be deferred, the church property was sold in 1853. After this time, a building was acquired on the corner of Whalley Avenue and Howe Street. Sister Harris, the dedicated wife of Deacon Harris lived long enough to see the church find its present home on Chapel Street. Other meeting places for the church, before finally locating on Chapel and Day Streets, were a school house on Carlisle Street; a building on Davenport Avenue; and Day’s Hall on the corner of Broadway and York Street. It is documented in the church history that one Sunday morning Rev. Black, filled with the spirit of God, asked those present to start a subscription to purchase a plot of ground on which to build a church. He stated that he would serve the church without fixed salary until the building was completed. When the church was completed, there was yet a debt of $600.00, which was borrowed from the New Haven Savings Bank. Rev. Black went to England, stayed one month and came back with every cent of the $600.00 he had earned. Under the leadership of Rev. J. Gardner Ross, who had financial ability and influence among some wealthy Baptist of the city, the property on the corners of Chapel and Day Streets was purchased. With the spirit of reconstruction and faith, when the church was dedicated in 1882, the name of the church was changed from Third Baptist to Immanuel Baptist meaning “God with Us”. Other pastors to serve Immanuel: Rev. Henry H. Johnson remained at Immanuel for two years. Rev. George H. Jackson served for five years and during this time a beautiful chapel was erected at the back of the church edifice. Rev. Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. came to Immanuel in 1893. Under his pastorate, a $1,000.00 organ was installed and in two years, the Fiftieth Anniversary was celebrated with nearly 200 members, seven ordained deacons, three licensed preachers, (two were medical doctors). Dr. Powell left after sixteen years to assume the pastorate of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City. Immanuel called Dr. David Klugh as its next pastor. At the meeting of 1912, seven deaconesses were elected. In 1913, there were two hundred seventy-five on the Church School roll with an average attendance of one hundred seventy-six each Sunday. Rev. Klugh left for a pastorate in Boston in 1918. Rev. John B. Pharr became pastor of Immanuel about five months later and remained until 1945. Rev. Pharr left Immanuel to organized The Community Baptist Church, New Haven. Rev. William Hall became pastor in 1945 and 115 members were added to the church during his first year as pastor. Rev. Hall left Immanuel in 1961 to begin New Hope Baptist Church, New Haven. In March 1962, Rev. C. Bruce Goodeau was called as supply pastor. He assumed full-time pastorate in August 1962. The old parsonage next door was torn down. There were dreams of a new church under Rev. Goodeau’s leadership, a blue-print plan for the new church, two Sherman Avenue properties were purchased and over one-quarter million dollars placed in a building fund. Rev. Goodeau resigned as Immanuel’s pastor in 1965. Rev. Curtis M. Cofield, II came to Immanuel in October 1966. That year, Rev. Cofield published in our city newspaper that most of his congregation were elderly persons, some already on fixed income. In 1972, six short years later, the new church structure, and a multi-million-dollar building was built. Many auxiliaries were organized under Dr. Cofield’s leadership. The church also established a Soup Kitchen, a Food Pantry, and a Clothes Closet as ministries to the surrounding community. Sister Cofield founded and expanded the AIDS Interfaith Network, Inc. at Immanuel. It grew into a celebrated worldwide independent institution. Immanuel is blessed with a life-long faithful, loyal, self-sacrificing congregation!! Dr. Cofield retired after 36 years of devoted service to Immanuel. As we stand on the threshold of a new millennium, we welcomed The Reverend Mr. Samuel T. Ross-Lee in 2001 as pastor of Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church. A native of Florida, Rev. Ross-Lee is a graduate of Morehouse College and the Harvard University School of Divinity. He served for 7.9 years as the pastor of The Gill Creek Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina.
