Academic Achievement and Korean Society & Culture

Chung-Ang University (CAU), established in 1918 with the educational ideals of truth and justice, has overcome the nation’s many

adversities and has taken the role of leadership in cultivating the intellectuals of Korea.

With the goal of ranking within the top 100 universities in the world by its centennial anniversary in 2018, Chung-Ang University has

intensified its effort to internationalize its educational programs and globalize its campus.

The Chung-Ang University’s International Summer Program contributes to that effort. In accordance with this vision, Chung-Ang

University launched the CAU Summer Program in 2005. Through this program, students are introduced to various topics ranging

from Korean business, social issues in Asia, traditional Korean culture as well as contemporary Korean society. The program also has

numerous experiential cultural activities, allowing for students to dive right into the Korean culture and make lasting relationships with

fellow international students as well as domestic Chung-Ang University students. The International Summer Program (ISP) at Chung-

Ang University is an opportunity for students to spend an unforgettable summer in Korea.

Travel and Study at CAU International Summer Program Republic of KOREA

The Republic of Korea is a small country on the far eastern edge of Asia. Although it

ranks 106th in the world in terms of land area, the country is a center of economic

activity as well as culture, and arts. Today, Korea is an industrial nation standing

tall on the world stage. Korea’s semiconductor, automobile, shipbuilding, steel and

IT industries are leaders in the world’s global markets. Korea has also been host to

the 1988 World Olympics in Seoul, the 2002 Korea-Japan FIFA World Cup, and has

been selected to host the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Recently, Korean

entertainment has been attracting many audiences globally, creating the "Korean

Wave." Korea's new standing in the international community was highlighted in

2010 by becoming the first Asian country to chair the G20 and host the G20 Seoul

Summit.

SEOULSeoul is the world’s 10th largest city and is also the center of all political, economic and cultural activities in Korea. Korea’s past and

present coexists harmoniously—with a heritage that spans across centuries and a future that lies with the cutting-edge technology

of its IT industry. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains and is built around the banks of the Han River with the nearest seaside

located only an hour away from Seoul.

Academic Achievement and Korean Society & CultureThe CAU International Summer Program (ISP) is a hybrid program providing students

with a window into Korea coupled with courses and cultural experiences that foster an

understanding of Korea’s culture and society.

CAU welcomes students from around the world to enjoy various courses covering Korean

culture and society as well as earning major course credits from overseas professors

specialized in Asia and Korea in subjects ranging from Business, Social Sciences,

International Relations, and Korean Language.

Students will have numerous cultural and experiential activities diving right into Korean

culture and making lasting friendships with fellow international students and local CAU

students. Session 2 provides students with Korean language and culture

courses, acting as a perfect introduction to Korea before students start

their semester of study at CAU.

1. COURSES

Lectures are organized into two different tracks. All students will enjoy lectures

and field trips covering Korean Culture and Society. Students must also choose

one elective course from subjects including: Business, Social Sciences,

International Relations, and Korean Language.

Session ⅡAug 3(Monday) ~ Aug 21(Friday), 2015 (3 weeks)

Seoul City TourStudents will visit many popular attractions in Seoul - the Royal Places, Insa-dong, Gwanghwamun square, Cheonggyecheon Stream, etc.

Visiting Korean CorporationsThrough visits at Korea’s leading businesses and industrial centers, students can understand the economy of Korea. Students will experience on-site tours of Hyundai or Doosan Industries experiencing the peak of high-tech Korean industries.

Field Trip to Gangwon-do Located in the mid-eastern part of the Korean peninsula, Gangwon-do Province is blessed with beautiful mountains and clean beaches offering some of the best sceneries and vacation spots throughout the year. Winter in Gangwon-do is heaven for winter sport enthusiasts, as the province receives a lot of snow. It is for this reason that Gangwon-do will be host of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Gangneung, and Jeongseon.

DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)The DMZ is a buffer zone to prevent an armed conflict after the armistice agreement between Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). There are some restrictions on the total number of troops, weapon disposition, and military installation in the DMZ. Students will get the chance to visit the Joint Security Area of the DMZ and experience the reality of the two divided Koreas. Temple StayStudents will have a unique opportunity to learn and experience Korean Buddhist culture. The Korean Buddhist Jogye and Cheontae Orders offer an opportunity to lodge and witness the temple life of monks and nuns under a temple stay program.

Korean Folk VillageThe Folk Village is a living museum that recreates the lifestyle of several centuries of Korean history. While touring historic Korea, students can indirectly experience ancestral wisdom and lifestyles.

K-Pop DanceK-Pop has developed from a Korean scene to a globalized frenzy. Students will have an opportunity to participate and learn Korean pop style dance moves that will make K-pop enthusiasts jealous and understand the urbanized Korean dance style..

Korean Culinary ExperienceWith the success of the Korean drama Daejanggeum, or Jewel in the Palace, in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan, the popularity or Korean foods is rising throughout Asia. The rising popularity is also attributable to the Korean Wave sweeping Asia. Students will have the chance to cook traditional Korean dishes and experience a Korean culinary experience.

TaekwondoTaekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art. It is an art of self-defense utilizing hand and feet movements. Students will undergo and learn the basic movements and forms of this traditional Korean martial art and have the chance to develop character and personality through physical, mental and spiritual discipline.

Experience Wearing Hanbok (Traditional Korean Clothing)Hanbok means literally “Korean dress”, and is the traditional clothing that Koreans have worn throughout the ages. Students will learn about the meaning of Korean traditional clothing and understand traditional Korean fashion and sentiments by wearing the traditional garments.

Traditional Korean Music and instrumentsStudents will have a chance to experience traditional Korean music, musical instruments, and its ensemble and also try out different Korean traditional musical instrument.

Korean Ceramic Art.Boasting a long history and a tradition of ceramics, Korean pottery is still at the top of the wish list for international visitors to Korea. Students will hear a presentation on the culture and history of Korean pottery, and they can then decorate unvarnished pieces of pottery or even try making their own on the potter’s wheel.

Through 15 intensive Korean courses, students will get a chance to understand Korean fundamentals and improve their Korean language ability. Lectures are organized by blocks of topics covering Korean language, Korean society, Korean folk and contemporary culture, Korean Media, etc. An in-depth look at various aspects of Korea can be experienced through five special lectures diverse on Korean society and culture. All lectures will be taught in English.

Bukchon Hanhok VillageSurrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses called 'hanok' that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. Today, many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants and tea houses, providing an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse in traditional Korean culture.

Nonverbal Korean Performance Show (NANTA)Seoul comes in at #3 in the number of performances presented following New York and Paris. NANTA, Korea’s representative nonverbal performance show, is already widely known throughout the world. Students can feel the great passion and enthusiasm towards performing arts from the actors and audiences.

The National Museum of KoreaA window into the history of Korea, the National Museum of Korea, the largest museum in Korea, displays 18,000 relics proudly exhibiting not only Korean cultural properties but also works of art from across Asia.

1. AccommodationOne of the best and most advanced university dormitories in Korea, Blue Mir Hall was built using Mondrian abstract art that balances

symmetry and order and is one of the newest buildings in Chung-Ang University. This residential building is surrounded by a small

natural forest. The building is equipped with state of the art air conditioning and heating system, wireless high speed internet, a large

dining area, fitness center, café and lounge.

Each room is fitted with two twin beds, two desks, an air conditioner/heater, and bathroom. Students wishing to stay in the dormitory

should check the housing option when submitting their application form by May 29, 2015(Session 1) and June 12, 2015(Session 2).

2. Health InsuranceHealth Insurance is required for all international students attending Chung-Ang University. If they do not carry a proper accident and

health insurance policy whose benefits match or exceed $20,000 respectively, they must purchase a health insurance policy in Korea.

We highly recommend students purchase the insurance offered by CAU as it is usually much more affordable than insurance purchased

abroad. It is also a sufficient short-term policy to cover students for the duration of our program.

3. VisaForeign nationals of those countries with which Korea has signed a visa waiver agreement (U.S, Most European countries, Japan, etc)

can enter Korea and participate in the ISP without a visa for duration of up to 90-days. For more information, please consult your

nearest embassy or consulate general.

Review of International Summer Program

This summer school program has been a great chance for me to experience Korea and to enjoy what it has to offer. The cultural activities have been a lot of fun and the lectures have taught me a great deal about Korea. It has been interesting to compare the modern urban city, with places like Gangnam and how they differ from the more traditional activates such as the day at the Korean folk village. Also my elective course has greatly increased my understanding of Korean politics and will help me further on in my course as I can use what I have learned towards my degree. The summer school program has been great fun and i have made lots of friends and memories here while attending classes i have really enjoyed and learnt a lot from.
