COMING EVENTS

Sunday 14 March 2010 Meet in the car park behind the Burnside Town Hall on the corner of Portrush Road and Greenhill Road, Burnside at 9 am for a 9.30 start. We will be visiting a very interesting cottage with many family heirlooms and a private veteran and vintage car collection

in the Adelaide hills. There will be a gold coin collection per person to visit the Museum. (This donation will be presented to a charity) It will be a short trip, followed by a BYO lunch, at a location yet to be selected. There is a bakery in Balhannah if you would like to purchase your

lunch. Otherwise bring a picnic lunch and chairs etc. If you are not coming to the next Club meeting, and would like to attend, please advise us of your intention, as the numbers may influence where lunch will be held.

22 - 23 May 2010 This is either an OVERNIGHT TRIP Saturday & Sunday for those who want to camp out or a DAY TRIP Sunday only for those who don’t wish to camp.

Adelaide to Woodlane on the River Murray. (Approx 85 km from Adelaide all on bitumen roads)

Visit a collection of Vintage Cars and see a River Murray filtration system in action.

We intend to meet at the “Bike Park Access” Parking Bay, Eagle on the Hill (old Princes Highway) either day at 9 am. If you wish to make other arrangements please see us.

We are camping on grassed private property and there is a shower and toilet available. There is also undercover area if the weather is inclement. We hope to have a damper competition on Saturday night and there will be a bon fire to

cook on.

Saturday 22nd - 9 am for a 9.30 start. Camping Crew: Caravans, Tents, Swags, etc all welcome, BYO food and drinking water.

2 May 2010 The Morris Register has again invited us to be part of their Turkey Run. This year’s event is based on the TV program Getaway, with a

number of check points around town, so bring a current Adelaide Street Directory. On completion of the event a BYO lunch is to be held at their club rooms on the corner of Harrison Rd and Simpson Ave, Devon Park.

From the Editor

This new year is off to a good start with some new people on our Committee. I w e l c o m e t h e i r presence and input,

and congratulate Cathy Woods on her new role as Vice President. The Committee has met for an interesting discussion on a range of topics to pave the way for another great year. One of numerous discussions was Club Runs which are generally well supported. Whilst we produce a raft of ideas, every club member is encouraged to find and host a run in consultation with the Committee of course. Remember it is OUR Club, so let us all contribute and keep it interesting. We remind members to wear your name badges for all club events. It is nice to be able to identify who we are speaking with. Failure to comply with this request could result in a verbal infringement notice from Club Sgt Greg Lind. Repeat offenders may be asked to pay a fine if the practise continues. Don’t be embarrassed. TAKE NOTE OF THIS WARNING. Our 30th Birthday celebration is

getting close and plans are taking shape beautifully. The Colley Reserve at Glenelg is a top spot for our event, and with full participation from our members we will make a real statement on that day. If you have more than one historic vehicle in your collection please approach a friend to drive it and make our display “Simply Spectacular” to the public eye. With Jetty Road shops trading, the Marina and the beach all nearby, there is plenty to engage the whole family. The local Rotary Club is also providing an inexpensive range of BBQ food and cold drinks. This is our special day so lets not waste the opportunity. We will soon be looking for a venue for our 2011 Calendar Photo shoot. If you have a select backdrop in mind, Richard Tapp, or Bob Haywood or yours truly would be interested to check out the location and if it could be tied in with an interesting run or picnic that would be even better. I was recently contacted by a lady with a tidy 2 owner from new 1976 Chrysler Galant with automatic transmission. She no longer has a use for the vehicle and offered to donate it to our

club with a wish for it to find a loving home with one of our club enthusiasts. The committee discussed how to treat this gift fairly and decided to offer it to our club members by way of tender. I have the vehicle stored at Para Hills and I welcome expressions of interest. Tender forms will be available and treated confidentially. More information and photo are in a separate article in this magazine. Membership renewals with log books and current registration papers have been flowing in quite well but for those who may have overlooked the matter please make it a priority to attend to it before March 31st. Our next club meeting is on April 14th and not the 7th as highlighted on our calendar. Whoops we got it wrong!!. With lots of events coming up I wish you happy and safe motoring.

30th Anniversary Event - Colley Reserve 11 April 2010 Our 30th Anniversary outing is almost upon us and we would like to see a record attendance for this event, given that we have a prestigious location to display our vehicles. There is probably no better opportunity to show the general public and motoring enthusiasts just what has been achieved, by our members over the past 30 years.

We are hoping to display up to 100 vehicles and that requires a bit of forethought and planning as to entry, parking and exit points; Brenton Gibb will have a team of highly visible marshals to assist in this exercise, so please co-operate with them on the day.

For Insurance and Risk Assessment reasons we need to establish some guidelines for the day and these are as follows:

All vehicles entering and exiting must be under the direction of Marshals.

Entry and exit to Colley Reserve will be only via the entry opposite Augusta St, about halfway along Colley Tce. Glenelg)

Vehicles up to and including 1960 manufacture arrive for assembly at 8.30 am

Vehicles manufactured after 1960 arrive between 9.00 am and 9.30 am

Officially the display will be open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm; if you have reason to leave any earlier please advise the Marshals on your arrival so they can park you accordingly.

We will have a Marquee in place but you may want to bring additional shelter and your own chairs. Rotary will have a food van on site providing a range of BBQ, sandwiches and soft drinks. For those requiring a more substantial meal there is a variety of cafes and

restaurants nearby.

Please remember this is an alcohol free zone.

The event’s success really depends on you and your vehicles being in attendance; come on along and join in.

To assist in planning the display layout, a clipboard will be passed around at the March meeting so you can advise us which vehicles you are bringing. If you are unable to attend this meeting please contact me with this information before the event.

Instant White Wall Tyres? A Melbourne business “Instant Whitewalls” (0414 986 263) adds white (and other colour) walls to existing tyres. It has been reported (http://www.vicstreetscene.com/forum/showthread.php?t=305) that the process used may result in the t y r e s b e i n g d e e m e d unroadworthy, as it removes the

raised printing on the side of the tyre to get a flat surface for accepting the colour. The argument is that all safety identification, age identifiers etc which are required by law for recognizing Australian safety standards, have been removed. If this process is of interest to you, you will have to consider

Sunday 31 January 2010

Once again it’s the beginning of the year and the first run being the Breakfast Run.

As Lindsay Gibb hadn’t known ray, David Crichton spoke about Ray’s association with the club. Ray and I enjoyed the runs and rallies that we attended. We made some great friendships.

Ray always said that the meetings were a bit of a shambles when he was President, but he enjoyed them (so did we - Ed) and was sorry when he had to retire. Thank you David - well done.

The run was fairly straight forward from Clark Avenue, Cross Roads, Fullarton Road, Greenhill Road then left in Howard and Devonport Terraces to get to the northern end of Hazelwood Park. This was the same destination as the last run that Ray organised as President!

It was a great morning and a good turnout as usual. There was a bit of “shade hopping” which gave me an opportunity to catch up with more of my friends, as I don’t get to many of the runs.

My very good friends Allan and Cynthia Kempster went out of their way to pick me up from Gawler - as usual. I would also

like to thank my dear friends John and Gill Fishlock - Ford A people - for coming.

To end the day the Wormald’s presented a birthday cake to Margaret Winston, Ken Dart and Merle Bryant (absent) with birthdays on the 31st, plus it was my birthday on the 30th and Chris Howes’ the next day on 1 February.

Wishing the club all the best for 2010 and hoping that the National Rally (Tour) will be a great success.

The story of Chrysler Restorers’ Club of Australia (S.A.) Inc., begins in 1979, when a few motoring en-thusiasts (principally Ron McNair, Brian Ludlam and Denis Goodman, who all owned Chrysler vehicles) thought it would be a good idea to form a club. Several South Austra-lians were already members of the N.S.W. club which was formed in 1973.

They held three informal gatherings and deemed there was enough pub-lic interest to warrant seeking the approval of the New South Wales Chrysler Restorers’ Club to form a group in South Australia.

We first heard about it at the North-ern Automotive Restoration Club’s inaugural rally at Clare in October 1979, where we met Brian Pocock, a Chrysler owner, who told us that moves were afoot to start a Chrysler Club in S.A.

At a N.A.R.C. meeting, which just happened to be held in our shed, a notice was read out informing mem-bers that a meeting was planned for February 19th 1980 in the Cafeteria

of the Chrysler plant at Tonsley Park ; the purpose of the meeting was to form a club and elect a com-mittee. It sounded interesting and Roy and I were among the 32 peo-ple who attended that meeting. A committee was elected and it was determined that member meetings would be held bi-monthly, with committee meetings in between, and that a bi-monthly newsletter would be published for members.

Meetings were held in the CMV clubrooms, Franklin Street, Ade-laide, and by the time of the inaugu-ral club run on July 13th 1980, to Mallala, there were 86 financial members who were declared the club’s foundation members.

This first club run was organised by Denis Clifton and attracted 15 vin-tage, classic and modern Chrysler vehicles.

From the very beginning, Chrysler SA was a family club, with the women and children encouraged to get involved.

The following is a summary of the club’s history since its formation.

1981 began with the first President’s

Run (to Hazelwood Park reserve) and the first club trophy, which was presented to Roy & Norma Schopp, whose 1927 Dodge (then still a buckboard) was the oldest vehicle on the run.

General meetings were now being held every month, and the newslet-ter was also a monthly publication. Other firsts were the club dinner and the Christmas picnic, all of these events becoming annual fixtures on the calendar.

The club also adopted its Constitu-tion, and applied for Federation membership.

And, while all this was happening, the last Chrysler came off the pro-duction line at Tonsley Park (28/8/1981).

1982 saw a “new look” newsletter when Roy & Norma Schopp volun-teered to take over as Editors – pub-lication reverted to bi-monthly, in-creased in size immediately, and included pages for the women and children. This was the start of the club magazine we know today, the standard of which became the envy of some other clubs.

Seven vehicles attended a rally with the Victorian club at Horsham – our first taste of interstate rallying.

1983 brought sadness with the pass-ing of Ron McNair, one of our founding members, but his memory was perpetuated with the decision of the Committee to establish the Ron McNair Memorial Trophy. This became the catalyst for the introduc-tion of all our annual awards. Club incorporation was also finalised in this year.

1984 - the AGM tradition of “standing room only” began (it’s still that way today!!). Club plates for our cars were introduced, with the allocation of the first 14 plates done by ballot. We held our first campout weekend at Geralka, at-tended by 49 people; and a competi-tion was held to design a wine label for our 5th anniversary rally.

The cost of vintage car permits rose to $4.00, an increase of $1 !!

1985 – our 5th anniversary rally was held at Hazelmere Estate, McLaren Vale, with 47 entries including sev-eral from Victoria. By now we had outgrown our meeting place at CMV, so we moved twice (in April to the Postal Institute rooms on West Terrace and then, in August, to the Gilles Street Primary School).

1986 – the President’s run became a “breakfast run”; the club established a parts shed at Mt.Barker; and inter-state meetings began with NSW and VIC.

1987 – the country member “status” changed to “50 kms from the Ade-laide GPO” – it used to be 100 kms.

1988 – the Triple C clubrooms at Glandore were finally opened and we moved into what has become our permanent home. Several members took part in the Castrol Bicentennial Rally to Canberra, and our first country pub lunch was held at Stockwell – this is now also an an-nual event.

1989 – our first “national” effort - 12 vehicles (and 24 people) attended the 5th National Chrysler Rally at Lake Hume, NSW. Here we made the “big sell” to get the next national rally in SA (and we won).

1990 – our first BIG trip – 13 club cars travelled to Alice Springs, via Ayers Rock, to gain the Overlander Badge awarded by the Alice Springs car club. This was a history-making trip for Richard & Judy Hart who were the first people, from any club, to gain all three categories of the award (veteran, vintage and classic) in the one trip.

Our 10th Anniversary was celebrated at Mallala (65 vehicles on display and 200 people attended).

The first Life Membership was awarded to Norma Schopp. Plan-ning began for the 1992 national rally in SA.

1991 – the club’s parts shed was relocated to Balaklava; we printed our first Restoration Service Direc-tory; and information boards were introduced for club vehicles on dis-play.

Hart’s 1929 De Soto and 1930s caravan were featured at the SA Caravan & Camping Show, and an article appeared in the magazine about old-style “teardrop” caravans, with the Editor’s speculation of a

convoy of vintage and classic cars and vans at a campout or rally in the future!! It took a few years but it is now a reality.

1992 saw the introduction of his-toric registration in SA. Catalogu-ing of the club library was finally completed.

SA hosted the 6th National Chrysler Rally, in the Barossa Valley – a re-cord number of 175 rally entries, and 217 vehicles on display day.

1993 – a large group of our mem-bers joined in the FIVA World Rally in Tasmania; the club’s tool “loan” service was established; and several club cars were featured in the TV mini series, “The Battlers.”

1994 – a group of club vehicles un-dertook a trip to Darwin and were the first to be awarded our club tour-ing badges for their efforts. Norma stepped down after 11½ years as Editor and was replaced by a com-mittee and a professional printer! The parts shed project folded. We celebrated 80 years of Dodge.

1995 – Twenty seven vehicles at-tended the club’s 15th anniversary which was celebrated at Wirrina.

The first of several gatherings with the TJ Richards family (SA makers of car bodies for many of our vehi-cles).

A group of 28 Club vehicles from SA attended the 7th National Chrys-ler Rally at Bendigo.

1996 – SA Chrysler had its first of-ficial display at the Adelaide Inter-national Motor Show.

Fourteen vehicles took part in the Nullarbor Whale Watch and West Coast Wander.

1997 – We finally got SA Chrysler club jackets.

1998 – Historic vehicle registration was streamlined with the introduc-tion of log books.

Thirty five vehicles attended the 8th National Chrysler Rally in Wollon-gong, NSW.

1999 – The President’s breakfast run officially became the Ray Miels Memorial Breakfast Run to perpetu-ate the memory of a dearly cher-ished President who had recently passed away.

A large contingent of members, with an assortment of club and modern vehicles and caravans etc. took part in a challenging tour of the Flinders Ranges.

2000 – Our 20th Anniversary was celebrated with a dinner at The Woolshed, West Beach, followed by a display day at The Levels the fol-lowing day. 83 vehicles registered

for the display.

The club’s 2nd Life Membership was awarded to Judy Hart.

SA hosted the national Dodge 4 rally at Goolwa, with a number of our members involved in planning and attending.

2001 – Australia’s Centenary of Federation, and many SA members took part in the National Federation Tour to Canberra.

SA hosted the 9th National Chrysler Rally and attracted 176 entrants at Adelaide Shores, West Beach.

2002 – Year of the Outback – join-ing thousands of other people, a large group of members and friends travelled halfway up the Birdsville Track to meet the Outback Cattle Drive at Mungeranie.

The club’s Constitution was revised and reprinted.

2003 – Club registration day was introduced, for the annual update of historic registration of members’ vehicles.

The club’s 3rd Life Membership was awarded to Ross Bryant.

2004 – Members attended the 10th National Chrysler Rally in Geelong.

The Triple C clubrooms unveiled the Murray Bryant Memorial Veran-

dah, once again in honour of a re-cently deceased much loved club member.

2005 – Our club’s 25th anniversary was celebrated at Mallala, with 98 vehicles and nearly 300 people at-tending.

A huge contingent of SA vehicles, including many from our club, took part in the Transport Hall of Fame anniversary in Alice Springs.

2006 – The 4th Life Membership was awarded to Richard Hart.

2007 – The 11th National Chrysler Rally (now known as a tour) was held in Canberra; many from SA attended.

2008 – Some of the more adventur-ous members successfully tackled a 12-day trip into the Gawler Ranges.

2009 – The feature display at the SA Caravan & Camping Show was a large gathering of SA Chrysler vehi-cles, complete with matching vin-tage and classic caravans, and Harts’ “Highway Palace” (1947 Fargo 5th wheeler).

A small group undertook a 12-day Limestone Coast Discovery Tour.

2010 – Our 30th Anniversary cele-bration is planned for Colley Re-serve at Glenelg in April.

Members are also involved in help-ing to host the National Dodge Brothers Tour (formerly Dodge 4 rally) in the Barossa Valley in Sep-tember.

More than 1500 members have “passed through” the Club in the past 30 years.

Eleven of the Club’s foundation members are still financial mem-bers: Judy McNair, Roy & Norma Schopp, Steve Lovell, Milton & Jenny Prosser, Cliff & Marcia Nis-sen, Geoff & Beth Hansen, and Tony Winton.

Of these eleven members, only the first four listed are currently attend-ing meetings and/or runs on a regu-lar basis.

Each year the elected committees have presented a very full program, with interesting guest speakers at

meetings, Sunday runs and campout weekends to a long list of different locations, and these have generally received excellent member support.

Members have also regularly at-tended events and rallies arranged by other motoring clubs in SA and interstate.

FROM RUSTY O’TOOLE Up until 1938 Canadian made Chrysler products used engines imported from the US. Starting in 1938, the Canadian Chrysler plant got its own engine facility. This plant made only one engine, the flathead 6 cylinder used in US made Chryslers and De Sotos. In order to make engines suitable for all kinds of cars and trucks, they made the same block with 2 different cylinder bores, 3 3/8 and 3 7/16. Generally speaking the smaller bore engine went in Plymouth Dodge and Dodge trucks while the larger bore engine went in Chrysler and De Soto cars. By using a longer stroke crankshaft they could make the same engine in various sizes. If you compare the US made engines to the Canadian made ones, you will find they had practically the s a m e d i s p l a c e m e n t a n d horsepower model for model. For example the 217 cu in (US) and 218 cu in (Canadian) were a very popular size for Plymouths. Then there was a 228 (Canadian) and 230 (US) used by Dodge and later year Plymouths. This disguised the fact that the American made Plymouth and Dodge had a completely different engine.

Most of the cars exported to British Commonwealth countries came from Canada because there was no import duties between Commonwealth countries. So you are likely to find a lot of these odd Canadian engines. The easy way to tell them apart is by the length, Canadian engines and US made Chrysler and De Soto engines measure 25 1/4 inches long at the head, while the US Plymouth and Dodge measure 23 inches. Other than that they look remarkably similar. Here are some common sizes gleaned from old service data books. Right now the info I have on hand only covers back to 1942. Before that I only have the US models. There may have been some other models made in the 1938 to 41 period for Canadian Plymouth and Dodge. 3 3/8 X 4 1/16 = 218 used in Plymouth 1940-59 small Dodge 40-59 3 3/8 X 4 1/4 = 228 used in De Soto 37-41 large Dodge 40-59 some 54-59 Plymouths with automatic transmission 3 3/8X 4 1/2 = 241 used in Chrysler 38-41 3 7/16 X 4 1/4 = 237 used in De Soto 42-50 3 7/16 X 4 1/2 = 251 used in Chrysler 42-51 De Soto 51 also used in some Dodge trucks in the fifties and in military 3/4 ton Dodge 4 wheel drive Power Wagons from the forties to 1972. 3 7/16 X 4 3/4 = 265 used in Chrysler 52-54 De Soto 52-54 some Dodge 1 ton and larger trucks up to 1962 and Chrysler industrial and marine to 1972. This was the biggest and best version with full flow oil filter.

1959 was the last year for the flathead 6 in cars and pickup trucks, after that they got the OHV slant six. The 251 and 265 were used in heavy trucks until 1962. Military Power Wagons used the 251 until 1968. Industrial and marine engines were made until 1972. A lot of these were used by Massey in combines. So don't overlook abandoned farm machinery as a source of engines. If you compare the Canadian cars to the American made equivalents the relationship will become clear. You can see they only had 1 engine with 2 cylinder bores and 4 crankshafts. By juggling these in different combinations they made a variety of engines for different applications. I have even seen an industrial engine with 3 7/16 bore and 4 1/16 stroke for 225 cubic inches. All these crankshafts will interchange in all blocks. The pistons are the same bore for bore, but you have to use the connecting rods that match the crankshaft as they are different lengths.

Also 1955 Plymouth and small Dodge with manual transmission 241.5 - 4-1/2" stroke - 1938-1941 Chrysler 3-7/16" bore : 236.6 - 4-1/4" stroke - 1942-1950 De Soto 250.6 - 4-1/2" stroke - 1942-1951 Chrysler and 1951 De Soto, 1955 Plymouth and small Dodge with Powerflite, 1956-1959 Plymouth and small Dodge 264.5 - 4-3/4" stroke - 1952-1954 De Soto and Chrysler All imported models, such as convertibles, used the same engines as in the U.S. Thus a Canadian-built 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook Belvedere hardtop had a 218-cid 25" block engine while the imported convertible had a 217-cid 23" block engine. Straight eight engines were never built in Canada and neither were cars with straight eights after 1937. In the context of Australian cars, Bill added: The long block flatheads usually came from Canada, as did the poly V8 engines, while the short block flatheads came from England (Kew). The 1953-56 Plymouths were sold in Australia as Plymouths, Dodges and De Sotos, with the appropriate 1953 / 54 grille. From 1957 to 1962 they were sold as Chrysler Royal, which was the 1953-54 body with 1956 Plymouth front clip, rear fenders and a larger wraparound rear window. The V8 engine fit as the American Dodge hardtop and convertible were built on the Plymouth chassis. As well, the front clip of the 114" wheelbase U.S. Dodge was used on the Dodge Kingsway

and Canadian Dodge. So, if a Coronet hardtop could be had with a V8, there was no reason why any 114" wheelbase 1953-54 Mopar car could not have a V8 engine.

FROM ELMO39 (New Zealand) The Aussies used the US or Canadian engines up till they introduced the 3 7/16 engine late in 1958, up till then they used the same engine id as Canada and the US. When the 3 7/16 long block first came out it was as a KEW. Later models up to 1960 when I think they stopped production of the 54 style were either PE1 OR PE2. or if you had the V8 it was a L-V OR M-V which was a 313. This information comes from a 1957-1960 Australian parts book that I have, plus earlier Aussie manuals that I have access to.

FROM ALLPAR.COM Important swap note (Rich Hall) This concerns the Mopar flathead six page http://www.allpar.com/mopar/flat.html and the part about the later engines being a "bolt for bolt swap". You just have to remember to swap enough bolts! I put a 1959 Plymouth engine (the last of the breed) in my first car, a 1948 Plymouth, in about 1968. There were obvious parts you had to swap, like the carburettor, the water pump, crankshaft pulley and generator (wide vs. narrow belts 6 vs. 12 Volts), the oil pan (to fit a different car frame), and the starter motor (6 vs. 12 Volts again.) All went well with the installation until I pushed the starter button. Klunk!! After some cyphering, I determined there was a slight change in the number of teeth on the ring gear and the 6 Volt starter bendix would not mesh!! No problem to use the old flywheel, except that now the engine was in the car and the rental hoist had been returned. Changing the flywheel in the car was far harder than when it was out. What you see pictured above is a Chrysler Air Raid Siren, the most powerful siren in the world. It's the size of a car, measuring near 12-feet in length and standing more than 6-feet tall. It also weighs twice as much as today's typical car. This gigantic siren is powered by an 180-HP Chrysler Industrial V-8 HEMI® gasoline engine. The super-duty engine directly drives a three-stage compressor that blows 2,610 cubic feet of air a minute, at nearly 7 PSI, into a giant siren rotor. The compressed air screams through the chopper and out through six giant horns with an exit velocity of 400 miles per hour. The result is an incredibly loud 138 dB sound (measured 100 feet from the siren). The loudness of this siren is unmatched by any other warning device ever sold, ever. It's also considerably louder than the largest steam whistle or horn. As if that were not dramatic enough, the whole unit, engine

and all, slowly rotates one and one-half times a minute on its iron turntable base. A few hundred of these monstrous Cold War sirens were produced and sold during the 1950's. Many remained in service for twenty plus years, sounding only for routine tests. Most people who lived in major metropolitan areas during the 1950's and 60's will remember the siren tests. Those particularly, who lived in or near Los Angeles, Seattle, Kansas City, Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, New York and even Miami could hear the haunting siren wail of a Chrysler Air Raid Siren. These were air raid sirens. In the 1940's they warned communities of enemy aircraft. In the 1950's and 60's they stood ready to warn of incoming enemy missiles. It's unlikely that were ever used for any other purpose. The air raid sirens Chrysler built were invented by Bell Telephone Laboratories during World War II. Three different production models of this siren design were made by Chrysler between 1942

and 1957. The Cold War model was the loudest and was built only in the six years ending in 1957. The Chrysler Air Raid Siren is so powerful that it can reportedly start fires with just the sound vibrations it produces. It can turn fog into rain, clearing the sky. It can produce an effective 70 dB air raid signal for a distance of two miles, and under proper conditions can be heard 30 to 50 miles away. Its advertised effective range was four miles in every direction. That's a long way! Because of the extreme sound power emitted by these sirens and the desire that their coverage area be extended as far as possible, they were usually mounted high on a steel tower or on top of multi-story building. As a result these sirens were always heard, but rarely seen. For most of the visitors to this website, this will be the first opportunity they have ever had to see the siren that prompted "Duck and Cover" drills. the same Hemi FirePower Engine Chrysler introduced in 1951 as their first V-8 engine. It represented an impressive improvement in engine design that produced 180 horsepower and a then high compression ratio. When Chrysler Air Raid Sirens were being retired during the 1970's they became a popular source of hot rod engines. According to a leading supplier of aftermarket parts for early Hemis, the engine can easily attain 330 horsepower and considerably higher than factory torque. Boring and blowing this engine can produce respectable performance statistics for any hot rod enthusiast. In 1988 Mr. Harry Barry of Pennsylvania expressed interest in purchasing a retired Chrysler Air Raid Siren from the top of a Pittsburgh grade school he once attended. Three years later that siren was still atop the building

when he acquired another Chrysler Air Raid Siren from Detroit, Michigan. That siren was returned to working condition and painted bright red (pictured above). A few years later Mr. Barry had both sirens in his possession. This website was created on March 8, 2003, to collect and share information about one of the most interesting sirens ever produced. The driving force behind this website was the purchase of a Chrysler Air Raid Siren by David Stall of Texas.

Mr. Stall intends to see that his s i r e n , d u b b e d t h e VictorySiren™, is fully and faithfully restored for a travelling public display. In the short time that this website, VictorySiren.com™, has been online, the public response has been tremendous. During the first two months the site has attracted an average of 100 visitors a day and the pace continues. It appears that Mr. Stall is not alone in his fascination with the world's most powerful siren. After only a month Mr. Stall acquired his second Chrysler Air Raid Siren. This second siren arrived in somewhat working condition from Burbank, California on April 16, 2003. It was promptly dubbed BigRed™. Mr. Stall plans to paint the siren to match it's name and factory color, restore this siren to good working condition and send it out to air shows where it can participate in WWII re-enactments. Foundation was organized exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific

purposes under the Texas Non-Profit Corporation Act. On June 30, 2003, VictorySiren Foundation, Inc. acquired its first Chrysler Air Raid Siren. The siren had been owned by Jim Carruthers of Oregon for more than twelve years. This Detroit siren was one of the twenty sirens purchased in 1952 by the City of Detroit. It is a sister siren to one of those owned by Harry Barry of Pennsylvania. The VictorySiren Foundation's Detroit siren is in Oregon where it will remain until funds can be raised to move the siren elsewhere for refurbishment.
