Comprehensive Instrument Control - Drivers

• Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ Chromeleon™ Chromatography Data System (CDS) software provides the ultimate solution for third party instrument control providing:• “Printer driver” plugin concept

• Integration of wrapped driver plugin solutions from leading instrument manufacturers• Agilent Instrument Control Framework (ICF)

• Waters Instrument Control Software (ICS)

• Driver Development Kit (DDK)• Used by Thermo Fisher Scientific for all internal driver development

• Available to other suppliers for driver development

• Chromeleon CDS supports over 400 different modules from 18 different manufacturers

6

Comprehensive Instrument Control - ePanels

• The instrument control area of your CDS may be hard to find and only offers limited control. Connecting to remote instruments can be tricky and you can’t edit the available interface or controls to suit your needs.

• The Chromeleon Console Instruments category provides fast access to all your instruments, and Chromeleon ePanels provide a customizable graphical interface with comprehensive access to instrument commands

Ensuring More “Right First Time” Analyses

11

Ensuring More “Right First Time” Analyses

• Controlled Sequence Creation• Easily start your analysis in accordance with your SOPs with just a few

clicks using eWorkflows.

• Sequence Ready Check• Run-time checking of your sequences ensures correctness.

• Ensuring Instrument Readiness• Configure your instruments to run with exactly the right settings for your

analysis with Smart Startup

• Run-time decision making• Built-in System Suitability Tests with Intelligent Run Control take

automated, in-sequence actions based on the actual chromatographic results.

Page 11: Chromatography Data System: Control your Instruments

12

Right First Time Analyses – Sequence Creation

• How do you ensure that your sequence is created and structured correctly? How do you know you have the right methods and report?

• eWorkflows for fast, easy, accurate sequence creation. They contain:• Instruments on which the analysis can be run• All associated files:

• Instrument methods• Processing methods• Reports• Spectral libraries• External documents (e.g. SOP)

• Template for sequence name and storage location• Custom variables• Rules for sequence layout

Page 12: Chromatography Data System: Control your Instruments

13

• eWorkflows make it easy for anyone to run analyses

• eWorkflows are the fastest way from sample to results with minimal effort and training

15

Right First Time Analyses – Sequence Readiness

• How do you know that the sequence you have just created will run without any problems? What if you add injections or modify the Instrument Method during the run? If there are issues, how do you identify them?

• Chromeleon Ready Check – automatically checks configured instrument, methods, and sequence for problems during run

Page 15: Chromatography Data System: Control your Instruments

16

Sequence Readiness – Ready Check

• Runs when sequence is started and before each injection• Runs in background and only pops up if finds any problems

• Runs throughout sequence in case extra injections or sequences are queued

• Can run manually at any time – also in Instrument Method Editor

• Reports any problems immediately in clear language• Also calculates amount of solvents required

• Ensures only consistent, correct sequences can be started

Page 16: Chromatography Data System: Control your Instruments

17

Right First Time Analyses – Instrument Readiness

• How do you know your instrument is ready to perform the analysis? Which settings do you need? How long should you wait for it to equilibrate? Ever left your system equilibrating for ages?• Usually left to analyst to decide - subjective. Often equilibrate too long or

add extra “sacrificial” injections wasting solvent, time and sample.

• Smart Startup initializes and equilibrates your instrument with correct chromatographic conditions before first injection.

Start your sequence with “Start with Smart Startup”

Page 17: Chromatography Data System: Control your Instruments

18

Instrument Readiness – Smart Startup

• Initial conditions are automatically extracted from Instrument Method• Stored inside Instrument Method – can be edited

• Also Smart Standby and Smart Shutdown settings

• First runs instrument wake up routine• Ensures modules are active and connected

• Next prepares instrument• Purges pump, runs gradient wash, flushes system

• Washes autosampler

• Switches column oven valves

• Heats or cools temperature-controlled modules

• Switches lamps on

• Finally sets initial conditions for all modules and equilibrates

Page 18: Chromatography Data System: Control your Instruments

19

Instrument Readiness – Smart Startup

• After 10 mins warm up, key parameters are monitored e.g.:

Pump pressure ripple

Sampler and oven temperature

Detector noise and drift

Page 19: Chromatography Data System: Control your Instruments

20

Instrument Readiness – Smart Startup

• Once everything is within specification sequence starts• Set Smart Startup per module and per sequence in Queue tab

• Can simplify automation of method switching

• Smart Startup:• Ensures first injection is good

• Removes subjectivity from system readiness and frees up analyst time

• Eliminates wasted solvent, sample and run time

Page 20: Chromatography Data System: Control your Instruments

21

Right First Time Analyses – Run-time control

• Can you react to changing conditions during the sequence? What if your RTs drift or the %RSD is out of spec? Can you re-inject a bad injection?• Usually left to analyst to decide – subjective and often too late.

• Conditional system suitability tests (SST) with Intelligent Run Control (IRC)• Allows decisions to be made during run:

• Insert Injections• Re-inject• Perform arithmetic processes • Extract Channels or optimum integration from a PDA 3D field

• Can be performed Conditionally or Unconditionally

• Includes error handling

Page 21: Chromatography Data System: Control your Instruments

22

Run-time Sequence Control – IRC

• Any measurable parameter can be monitored and reacted to using built-in SSTs• Can also check results against specifications

Select required test type

Set evaluation parameters

24

Run-time Sequence Control – IRC

• Example: Re-inject check standards if “RSD of Peak Areas” fails

• SST and IRC ensure you get more right first time analyses
