Christmas TeaAngels at the Arboretum was a huge success as many came to see hundreds of angels on display at the DeGolyer Estate.

Pictures With Santaat the Texas Beta House

The Junior Day Group’s “Pictures with Santa” event was a huge success this year! Many thanks to Ashley Gray and Gina Murphy for organizing and executing the event.

This is always a highlight for our members with young children and it is a great fundraiser for the Junior Day Group!

New York Theater TourThe October 2012 Theater trip was enjoyed by all travelers, many of whom have traveled with us before, but we also had lots of new faces. The group stayed at the New York Palace Hotel, which is located in the heart of midtown Manhattan, and is mere steps from Fifth Avenue boutiques, Broadway theaters, Central Park, and Rockefeller Center. They saw four fabulous shows: Motown, Kinky Boots, Pippin, and Matilda.

Literacy and National Day of Service

Pi Beta Phi Champions Are Readers (CAR) program is a month-long reading enrichment program for students designed to supplement reading activities that schools already provide. Volunteers read to West Dallas Community School 4th graders for 4 Thursdays in February. The children received 2 new books and bookplates for their participation. A party was held on the last day. Thanks to all who volunteered their time for these students!

Dallas Alumnae Club is proud to continue the tradition of Pi Beta Phi’s philanthropy to improve literacy across America.

Pi Beta Phi is partnered with First Book, an international nonprofit organization founded in 1992 with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.

First Book and Pi Beta Phi are committed to bringing new books to children from low-income families in communities across the United States and Canada.

Volunteers presented 500 books to Carver Elementary School in West Dallas.

Spotlight on Dallas Area Collegians

SAWYER SALVINO is a junior at The University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Education. She pledged Pi Phi in 2011 and was initiated into the Texas Alpha chapter later in the spring. Since initiation, Sawyer has led a small group of Pi Phi’s in bible study as well as being on Standards. She is currently student teaching in East Austin for her major. She has also worked as a nanny for a young family in Austin. She will be studying abroad this summer in Italy. Sawyer loves the many friends she has made in Pi Phi and is honored to carry on the Pi Phi legacy passed on to her from her grandmother, Carol Stollenwerck. Sawyer is the daughter of Elizabeth and Syd Hurley of Dallas and Kimberly and Vic Salvino of California.

CAROLINE NELSON is the daughter of Ed and Carol Nelson (Colorado Alpha) and the sister of Laura Nelson (Texas Alpha). She graduated from Highland Park High School in 2012 and is a sophomore at Baylor University. Caroline is majoring in Nutrition Sciences with a secondary major in French. She has made the Dean’s Academic Honor list each semester and was awarded the Baylor Gold Scholarship and the Thomas J. Watson Memorial Scholarship. Caroline pledged the Texas Zeta chapter of Pi Beta Phi in January 2013 and was elected Pledge Class President. She is serving on the Policy and Standards Board, is a member of the Scholarship and Awards Committee, and is the Minutes Chair. She was in the 2013 Pigskin Review, is in the Sing cast this year, and is active in intramurals.

Caroline volunteers at Pack of Hope in Waco, which provides low-income students with meals every week. She also served lunches for low-income children this past summer in Waco at University Baptist Church.

Outside of Pi Phi, Caroline serves as the Secretary for the Baylor Student Nutrition Association, is a member of the Baylor Dining Advisory Committee, and the Baylor French Club. Caroline is studying in Paris, France this summer as a part of the Baylor in Paris program.
