Adios! What a great time I have had being the President and CEO of the San Juan Quilters Guild for 2012. A BIG thank you to all the members who took the time and put forth the effort to serve on Guild committees or took the responsibility of being an offi-cer. You all made this year a very special year for the Guild. A lot of effort and time was put into updating the By Laws, streamlining the job descriptions and redesigning the Handbooks. The hope is to make things clearer for those volunteering to fill positions and to cut down on published materials. Our Guild Quilt Show was so well presented. All the people on the committee did a great job. Their hard work certainly paid off. The support of our members work-ing at the show was impressive. Didn’t you just love seeing Edith Ann’s smiling face on the front page of The Daily Times? You go, Girl! I must tell you, I loved being president of our Guild and will miss it but I know I leave it in good hands. Gail will have such a wonderful group of ladies to work with in 2013. I must find a new title that befits my position in 2013. What about Grand Pooh-Bah of Quilting or Queen Mother of Quilting? Surely one of you clever ladies can come up with a new title for me! (Ah, ah, ah - be nice!) Thanks again for a great year! El Presidente & CEO Carol Spangler

San Juan Quilters Guild Board Meeting Minutes – November 15, 2012
The meeting was called to order by the President, Carol Spangler.
The minutes were approved as published. Gail Aspromonte moved to approve the minutes and Viola Kelly 2nd the motion. The Treasurer’s report was distributed by the Treasurer, Kim Duke. Discussion followed about
how much everyone was spending and we all need to look at our expenses and cut back if pos-sible, according to the Treasurer. The newsletter is an area where the Guild needs to consider
cutting costs. Is the Guild losing members do to the cost of membership? Door Prizes are making the Guild money. The workshop fees may be increasing in the future. Old Business:
Bylaw changes: The membership voted at the October 9, 2012 morning and evening meetings to approved the changes. The morning meeting members voted 54 for the changes and 0
against the changes. The evening meeting members voted 32 for the changes and 0 against the changes. The Bylaws changes will be officially published every 5 years, so members must keep their Bylaws/Policy document because a new document will NOT be published every year
Job Descriptions: There will be new Committee Chairman (Job Description) notebooks. They will contain only 5 years of information. There is a one page guideline of what type of informa-
tion will be kept in the notebook so all new Committee chairman will have a starting place. The old notebooks can pass on to the new Committee Chairman or stored or disposed off. One sug-
gestion was to scan pertinent information to a storage device and dispose of that information. Roster: A sample notebook was displayed that included the current roster, the 5 year Bylaws/Policy information and the 2013 basic Quilt Show information. Each member will be responsible
for their Bylaws/Policy information for 5 years. Officers for 2013: The officers for 2013 are as follows:
President - Gail Aspromonte 1st Vice President – Susan Wood 2nd Vice President – Donna Schmitt
Secretary – Billie Whitlow Treasurer – Kim Duke
The current secretary, Cathy Korzan, will produce a letter on Guild letterhead for the new offi-cers to take to the bank for new signature cards. The current President will contact Parkers Office Products for a name tag for the new president.
2012 Quilt Show: There were 2 items that the President received complaints from others: 1. There were many complaints about the take-in process. One of the main problems was
that members did NOT take advantage of the early check-in process. 95% of the quilts hung in the quilt show were submitted the day before they were to be hung. This created major back-ups in entering data, sorting quilts and generally getting ready to hang quilts the next day.
Plus most of the night and the next day were spent producing labels for the quilts. 2. Voting result numbers for winners in the various categories was not kept quiet. This cre-
ated hard feelings among quilt show entrants. The voting results numbers need to be kept pri-vate. Quilt Show discussion: No ropes was great; ballets were handed out individually which worked
well; luncheon on Thursday and the workroom are a must; Thursday lunch is a great way to say thank you to the workers.
Our storage unit is full - nothing else can be fit in the box. There is not room to put the clean sheets in the box. Next year the contents of the storage box need to be gone through and weeded out. i.e. scrapbooks, old Committee notebooks, Discussion followed about what to do
about the old scrapbooks and Committee notebooks.

Members are bringing food into the quilt show! The members need to set an example for the public! Mem-bers did not take any of the advertising that was produced for the Quilt Show. Contributions for year end: the Presbyterian church gets $200 for the use of their facilities for board meet-ings; the Masonic Lodge in Aztec gets $100 for the use of their building for classes; the 2nd Vice President gets $50 for a job well job. This will be the last year for the 2nd Vice President to get paid. New Business: Complimentary guild membership: Discussion followed on whether to offer complimentary guild memberships to Dwight Lawing and Paul Sawyer. Sue Ludwig made the motion to make Dwight Lawing and Paul Sawyer honorary members of the Guild and Cathy Korzan 2nd the motion. All members present approved the motion. The Secretary, Cathy Korzan, will send thank you notes to Dwight Lawing and Paul Sawyer for their help with the 2012 Quilt Show. Committee Reports: Community Service: A year end report was distributed. Birthright received 51 small quilts, 22 small fleece blankets, 2 bags of hats and 5 bibs. Red Cross received 23 quilts and 10 fleece blankets. SANE received 105 fleece blankets. UNM Pediatric Oncology Center received 34 pillows with pillowcases. San Juan Care/Rehab Center received 12 quilts. Quilts of Valor received 15 quilts. Sunshine Committee received 8 quilts. Opportunity Quilt: There were expenses of $386.27 and receipts/ticket sales of $4016.20. It is recom-mended that the 5 following public venues be used for selling tickets: Spring Art Walk in March – to be at the Patchwork Pig; Four Corners Quilt Gathering in April – Durango; Riverfest in May – Farmington; San Juan County Fair in August – McGee Park; and Fall Art Walk and the Quilt Show. In addition the local quilt shops will display the quilt and sell raffle tickets for the Guild. Discussion followed about other indoor venues for displaying and selling tickets. Programs: the 2013 Programs Chairman presented a tentative schedule and budget for next year’s pro-grams. Action Items:
Cathy Korzan, secretary, will write a letter for Citizen’s Bank containing the names of the 2013 officers. Cathy Korzan, secretary, will write thank you notes to Dwight Lawing and Paul Sawyer for their help with
the 2013 Quilt Show. Attendees: Carol Spangler, Sue Ludwig, Viola Kelly, Linda Barlow, Kim Duke, Gail Aspromonte, Shari Schmitt, Billie Whitlow, Sandy Matlock, Marlene Galindo, Betsy Lee, Cathy Korzan A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Betsy Lee and 2nd by Sue Ludwig. What is coming in January to San Juan Quilters Guild?
Join the Block of the Month (BOM). This BOM will be a mystery. You will create a
unique quilt by making choices throughout the steps.. Each step will have choices.
You pick the one that you find interesting or want to try. This BOM will need a focus
fabric (1 ~ 2 yards) and several coordinating fabrics ( ½ yd cuts of light, medium and
dark fabric). You can use your favorite fabric preferences or try something new. There
will not be steps each month so you have time to complete the steps.
Join at the January meeting and you will get your first set of steps to begin the myste-
rious journey. You do not bring any of your blocks to guild until Show and Tell in
October. (You will have a completed quilt to enter in the 2013 show. What a deal!)
