Auckland Eye has been involved in international research trials for 15 years when Doctors Stephen Best, Justin Mora and Dean Corbett were the New Zealand investigators in three international multicentre glaucoma trials. This year has been particularly exciting. We’ve undertaken numerous clinical trials, led mainly by Dr Dean Corbett, including trials on cataracts, macular degeneration, presbyopia and updates on current technology.

KAMRA – Short Distance Vision

Dr Corbett has been involved in an international trial for KAMRA (Acufocus) over the past six years. KAMRA devices are inserted into the cornea and provide near vision for patients who have presbyopia (age-related long sightedness that requires glasses for reading).

Corneal Inlay

Because of our involvement and interest in this research we were the first in the Southern Hemisphere to insert a corneal inlay for

presbyopia. Dr Corbett has completed the Acufocus trial and has embarked on several trials using sophisticated intraocular lenses (IOL’s) in cataract surgery, with the aim of providing even better visual outcomes.

AMDAssoc Prof Philip Polkinghorne has begun a trial investigating an oral drug for Age-related Macula Degeneration (AMD) which could replace the current treatment of regular injections.

Currently we have six trials in finalisation, progress or acceptance phases, with others in the pipeline being scrutinised for their feasibility. We're looking forward to doing more 'firsts' and being innovators in the field.

AUCKLAND EYE CHRISTMAS HOURS We’re closed from 12 noon on Tuesday 24 December until Sunday 29 December inclusive.

On Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 December and Friday 3 January we will be open afternoons 1 - 5pm.

Monday 6 January onwards will be business as usual.

We are really proud to announce that at this year’s Ride to Conquer Cancer charity bike race, the Auckland Eye team raised $12,112 for the cause – beating our ambitious target of $11,900.

The race was an epic two-day, 200+ km event with all the proceeds going to the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre. The team was led by Doctor Dean Corbett who said the race was a "great and well organised event, supported by dedicated individuals to raise funds for a wonderful cause."

"It’s an awesome triumph physically - and emotionally as well." - Dr Dean Corbett

Doctor Stephen Best, already a bona fide cycling hero to his colleagues, often replies to the question "What are you training for?" with, "the greatest race...life!... So now I am also training to help others with their race for life". The Auckland Eye Team sincerely thanks to all those who contributed to the cause through their generous donations.
