Working individual cross stitches
Working from left to right, make the first
diagonal stitch of the cross (slants from top left
to bottom right) over two threads of evenweave
fabric or over one block of Aida. Complete the
cross by stitching the second diagonal from top
right to bottom left. Repeat as required.
Working cross stitch in rows
Each row of crosses is worked over two
journeys. On the first journey, work from right
to left making a row of evenly-spaced diagonal
stitches. Turn at the end of the row and work in
the opposite direction, making diagonal stitches
to complete the crosses. Work the next and
subsequent rows below the first and repeat until
the block of colour is completed.
Working back stitch
Work back stitch rows from right to left, making
small, evenly-sized stitches along the row. As a
general rule, make back stitches the same size as
cross stitches, unless directed otherwise.
HOW TO WORK THE STITCHES USED IN THIS DESIGN
Working Chinese knots
Most embroidered knots are a little tricky to work
neatly, so you may need to practise them a few times
on a scrap of fabric. This knot is easier to work than
the more traditional French knot – however, if you
find this stitch difficult to master, it’s acceptable to
substitute a tiny bead of the appropriate colour for
each knot shown on the chart.
Bring the thread through to the front. Make a loose
loop of thread round the needle and insert the point
back into the fabric a short distance from where it
emerged. Tighten the thread, hold the loop down on
the fabric with your thumb and gently pull the thread
through to the back of the fabric to complete the knot.
Note:
The chart for Christmas Happiness Bellpull covers three pages and the grid on the chart overlaps
by three squares. The overlap is indicated by a tint on the chart.
