Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays to everyone,

The holidays are upon us and as usual, the Orange County and Los AngelesSections will be hosting our joint Christmas Cruise on December 12 from theLong Beach harbor. We invite anyone interested to come join the festivities, have a little eggnog and dinner, and gather with friends. The event was a greatsuccess two years ago and this year should be just as good, just make sure tobring warm clothes and a thick jacket (it gets chilly at night on the water).

Those that attended the Automation OC show October 27 probably enjoyedplenty of well-made German food for free, and visited some of the 60+ exhibitorsat the show. For our first show, I think it was a huge success. As always, we hadmuch to learn and next year will be all that much better. A HUGE thank you

goes out to John Prince (ISAOC Newsletter Editor and President of APG Analyzer Systems) for all ofhis hard work in leading the operation for the show. His hard work and ability to assemble a show ofthis stature within 2 months time is a true testament to his work ethic and character. I would also liketo thank the ISAOC Board members (especially Bis Mitra) and Kandace Peterson for all their work andtime, the day of the event was a big team effort.

November’s presentation by Romel Bhullar and Mark Murphy, both highly respected engineersfrom Fluor, on the topic of Designing Safer Plants, was well attended and informative. Thank you toboth for donating their time to educate the OC members. The Christmas Cruise as mentioned abovehas replaced the December meeting.

Lastly, we will be adding a new addition to the beginning of each presentation. As a result of theeconomy, we will be offering a brief one-minute slot to any individual, seeking a job, to speak to thegroup and express their qualifications and type of job they are seeking. Employers looking foremployees will also be given a one-minute slot to advertise their available positions. We hope thisadds to the value of the meetings and encourage all to take advantage of the opportunity. Don’t forgetyou also have the opportunity to advertise your availability in the Chart newsletter for free as well.

Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Sometime when you find yourself alone in the house this holidayseason, why not slip into the kitchen and whip up a nice surprise foreveryone by making some special holiday cookies! First, gather togetherthe ingredients:

1. 532.35 cm3 gluten2. 4.9 cm3 NaHCO33. 4.9 cm3 refined halite4. 236.6 cm3 partially hydrogenated tallow triglyceride5. 350 cm3 crystaline C12H22O116. 4.9 cm3 methyl ether of protocatechuic aldehyde7. 2 calcium carbonate-encapsulated albumen-coated protein8. 473.2 cm3 theobroma cacao9. 236.6 cm3 de-encapsulated legume meats (sieve size #10)

To a 2 litre jacketed round reactor vessel (reactor #1) with anoverall heat transfer coefficient of about 100 Btu/°F-ft2-hr, addingredients one, two and three with constant agitation. In a second 2litre reactor vessel with a radial flow impeller operating at 100 rpm,add ingredients four, five, six, and seven until the mixture is homog-enous.

To reactor #2, add ingredient eight, followed by three equalvolumes of the homogenous mixture in reactor #1. Additionally, addingredient nine and ten slowly, with constant agitation. Care must betaken at this point in the reaction to control any temperature rise thatmay be the result of an exothermic reaction.

Using a screw extrude attached to a #4 nodulizer, place themixture piece-meal on a 300 series stainless steel sheet (300 x 600mm). Heat in a 460°K oven for a period of time that is in agreementwith Frank & Johnston’s first order rate expression or until goldenbrown. Once the reaction is complete, place the sheet on a 25°C heat-transfer table, allowing the product to come to thermal equilibrium.

For non-engineers.... gluten = flour; NaHCO3 = Sodium bicarbon-ate / baking soda; halite = salt; partially hydrogenated tallow triglycer-ide = butter/margerine; C12H22O11 = sugar; methyl ether ofprotocatechnic aldehyde = vanilla essence; calcium carbonated-encapsulated avian albumen-coated protein ovoids = eggs; theobromacacao = cocoa; de-encapsulated legume meats = nuts; reactor vessel(reactor #1) = mixing bowl.

The IEC 61508 S&P subcommitteenow has a team of four volunteers. Thesevolunteers are planning their first meetingFriday, November 15, 2009, to discuss IEC61508 in general. The discussion shouldreveal the team’s knowledge of IEC 61508.If training for the team is required, thenconsecutive meetings will plan thattraining.

The roles the team needs to assign forthis project are: configuration management,

quality assurance, development, and verification as a minimum. Wehave just enough volunteers for that. More volunteers could speed theproject. After the skills and desires of the individual team membersare assessed, the roles can be assigned.

The team also needs to determine what the specific safety-relatedproduct will be. The team needs to plan all the functional safetymanagement activities required by IEC 61508, clause 6. The safetylifecycles need to be defined, and the corresponding techniques andmeasures from IEC 61508-7 need to be documented in plans. I expectthese plans will be posted on the ISALA website when they arereleased to configuration control. I am not sure of the schedule for theposting of these documents. There will be more updates in consecutiveNewsletters.

Certificates of appreciation were given to Romel Bhuller, PE, andMark Murphy, PE, both of Fluor for their presentation explaining asystematic approach to implementing safety standards IEC 61508 and61511.
